Society Notice Board

Editor’s Comments: Do you remember the summer of 2007…back in April !!! I’m writing this as my burn is overflowing its bank and flowing nicely over the lawn. Up here in the north-east of Scotland, the sun has only been out on a handful of occasions since the 2 June and a temperature in the 60s is good. At least I found some sun and warmth on my trip down south. Hopefully no members have suffered badly in the recent floods, which has also caused much rail disruption particularly throughout the Yorkshire area. Let’s hope that July turns out like last year. Please note that the HB Publications page is now included as an insert. This has freed up space for more feature articles, so hopefully the popular features will become more regular (all regular features are in this month, due to Stock Changes being absent.). This includes Preservation Report, so again can I ask that members visiting preserved sites to contribute and if possible provide an accompanying high- resolution photo.

Magazine: Any information / article on any railway related item will always be most welcome for inclusion in part or as a whole in the magazine. Your travel stories / anecdotes about far flung parts of the railway network, past or present can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, so please consider sharing your knowledge and experiences. Please note that contributions for Out and About Sightings only should be sent to James Holloway, items for European News (and Sightings) to Robert Brown and for Wagon Corner and Light Rail & Metro News to Martin Hall. All other items should be sent to Trevor Roots / Peter Britcliffe. (All addresses are on Page 2) Neatly typed submissions are perfectly acceptable, but if you have a PC with Microsoft Word or Excel, then a document on CD is a bonus or better still e-mail them to the appropriate official. Good quality photographs are always welcome for inclusion in the magazine – colour or black and white clear prints of any railway subject will be considered but preferably digital photographs via e-mail. To credit members correctly please include your name with any submissions. Some items may be placed on our excellent website if we have insufficient space in the magazine, The latest date for articles / info for the next magazine is Thursday 26th July 2007. Items for Out and About Sightings should be sent in to James a few days earlier if possible please.

8 Where in the…..?

A light-hearted look around Britain, at the current railway scene to see if you can spot the location.

Last month’s location was Mitre Bridge (looking east) where the Kensington Olympia – Willesden Jnct line crosses the Grand Union Canal (Paddington Branch). Over the wall to the right is the Great Western Main Line with North Pole Depot and Old Oak TMD

Where might this derelict closed station be, as seen on 14 June 2007 ? (clue - this branch line is still used by nuclear flask trains)

Railway Cuttings

Michael Hillier’s Railway Cuttings Article one Dogs are the latest passengers to travel by train thanks to a new scheme. Following a three-month trial, rail users can now travel with assistance dogs on Arriva Trains Wales services. The scheme was devised in partnership with Assistance Dogs and allows a protected space reserved in front of a seat for the dog when travelling with their handler.

Article two Rail passengers in South Wales are facing some of the worst conditions in the UK, with one service so crowded it is regularly 78% over capacity. The 5.15pm Cardiff Central to Maesteg train is the fourth most overcrowded and is often so packed commuters get left behind. Tomorrow, in a bid to highlight the problem, campaign group Transport 2000, who carried out the research, will send their trouble-shooter out to get first-hand experience of the problem. The Arriva Trains Wales service is one of 10 routes identified by Transport 2000 as having exceeded the Department for Transport's ceiling of 14% of overcrowding. Roland Pittard, member of independent passenger group Rail-future and regular train user said: "The train can be so crowded on leaving Cardiff that some people can't get on. The rest have to stand in cramped conditions until Llantrisant when it eases off. "If passengers travelling to Maesteg can't get on, there isn't another one for an hour." Passengers who regularly use the route, back up his findings. Bank worker Islwyn Davies, 40, from Brackla, Bridgend, who regularly uses the service, said: "It's so overcrowded and congested it's unbelievable. They are heaving. "I get a seat about 60 per cent of the time but you have to try to get on the train first and it's a bit of a bustle to get through the doors. They should put on more carriages." Evidence is being gathered of rail overcrowding to send to the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, in the run-up to this summer’s expected 30-year rail strategy. Julia Thomas, Transport 2000's public transport campaigner, said: "It's very easy to blame rail operators for overcrowding problems, but

9 actually a lot of it is down to the Government's rail policy. They have issued no growth franchises for the past 10 years and they've been promoting a policy of fares hikes to get people to travel off-peak. But passengers really don't have that much flexibility." Many passengers are forced to stand on the Cardiff Central to Swansea 5.21pm journey. The Welsh Assembly Government has paid for two additional carriages to run on this line during the week, but not at weekends, when the most severe overcrowding occurs. Today, a spokeswoman for Arriva Trains Wales said the problems on the Cardiff to Maesteg service had been exacerbated by First Great Western's decision to cancel its 5.18pm Cardiff Central to Swansea service. Many commuters from Bridgend, who have been forced onto the Cardiff to Maesteg service, used this. But she said the problems should have eased by December when new trains, paid for by the Welsh Assembly Government, and extra carriages are commissioned.

Gordon Wharrie’s Railway Cuttings Article 1 A new British Transport Police officer will be based at Gloucester railway station to help make the network safer. Sergeant Paul Hunt will cover several stations and rail routes, including Gloucester, Stroud, Cheltenham, Swindon, Hereford and Malvern. The father-of-four said he was delighted to be taking up the role. "It is our priority to reassure the Public and make the railway environment a safer place to travel by reducing crime," he said. "We aim to do this by increasing the amount of police presence. In addition, patrol times have been extended." PCs Alan Fishpool, Andrew Carroll, Frank Hedley and Carole Dade will join him.

Article 2 Steam trains could soon be back in Swindon on a regular basis for the first time in more than 40 years as part of a unique green transport scheme. The project will involve building a new railway station at Moulden Hill, an edge-of-town spot that is about to become Swindon's fifth country park. The station will be linked by newly laid track to the headquarters of the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Society, which runs locomotives on a mile of recreated line every weekend. Ever since the society was allotted a mud heap on the site of the demolished Blunsdon station in 1979, members have dreamed of running engines back into Swindon. Over the years, volunteers have re- constructed Blunsdon station, where an assortment of restored engines and rolling stock can be seen. The scheme is now part of the £15 million Cricklade Country Way project, which aims to join Swindon with Cricklade via five miles of restored railway and canal. Last year, the project won £250,000 to prepare a detailed application for a £12.8 million Living Landmarks Lottery Fund, which has to be submitted by the end of next month. Swindon Borough councillors are set to approve the parts of the North Wiltshire District Council-led scheme, which falls within its boundaries, including new track and station. The entire project, combining elements of countryside recreation, protection of the landscape, heritage and tourism could now be up and running within six years, if lottery cash is forthcoming.

PEAK FOREST SIDINGS

Location: OS Map Ref: SK092 768 (road bridge) Peak Forest sidings are situated at Peak Dale on the freight only line which leaves the – Sheffield line (through Edale) via Chinley North and Chinley East Junctions and then passes under the Stockport – Buxton line in Dove Holes Tunnel (1mile 1224 yards) emerging at Peak Forest sidings. The line continues onto Buxton serving Great Rocks and other various quarries.

Access: Rail (Passing): None. Rail (Foot): Northern Rail runs a 2 hourly service from Manchester to Buxton via Stockport stopping at Dove Holes, with trains crossing roughly every hour from each direction. To reach Peak Forest sidings turn right outside the station and cross over the A6, the road continues towards Peak Dale where after approx. ½ mile, the southern end of Dove Holes Tunnel is reached and the road then runs adjacent and parallel with the line for a further ½ mile until a T junction and road bridge are reached. Road: Peak Forest sidings are actually near Peak Dale 1 mile to the east of the A6 between Buxton and Chapel-en-le-Frith. Approaching from the south, turn right (Batham Gate) on the first road after passing through golf course north of Buxton. This road continues over the line to Peak Forest (1½ miles) on the A623, which would be the route in reverse if approaching from the east. From the north turn left in Dove Holes as per rail/foot directions. There is a small area to park near to the road junction and bridge. Site Access (Foot): Opposite the parking area west of the road bridge, a footpath climbs up alongside the line running south alongside the EWS 60082, 60059 & 60018 (in distance) line from which views of stabled locos / wagons view south from road bridge can be gained. There is a handy bench Peak Forest sidings, 14 April 2007 alongside the footpath.

Passenger Traffic: None.

Freight Traffic: Class 60s and 66s and a resident 08 shunter.

Facilities: There are none in the immediate vicinity.

Best Photography Sites: It is a reasonable place for photography with several places to shoot from and interest with a signal box and semaphore signals. The afternoon would generally be best as road and footpath are to the west of the line. For shots from the eastern side of the line and good views north & south from bridge then morning is best, the earlier the better for southern shots. The accompanying photos were taken around 11.00am on a clear day, though being April the sun was low. (Also see rear cover photo in May issue)

TRAM NEWS:

Manchester Metrolink: Stagecoach has been preferred as the new operator of the Manchester Metrolink. There will also be an order for eight new ‘Flexity Swift’ trams built by Bombardier in partnership with Vossloh, which should be in service by 2009. Glasgow: Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) would like to extend the existing underground system into Glasgow’s East End costing £2.3bn. Midland Metro: The extension to Quinton and Birmingham Airport is still being evaluated but it would be a useful route, as is the Birmingham to the route but it would be a combined cost of £1.1bn. Blackpool: Concerns over funding is growing as costs escalate for the reconstruction of the and a fleet of new trams. Croydon: It now looks like the extension to Crystal Palace will go ahead and work should start early next April.

Dublin: LUAS has ordered 18 new ‘Citadis’ trams from Alstom at a cost of €51.2m, the first tram should arrive in December 2008. Edinburgh: Work has now started on the tram system earlier than expected with relocation of water and gas mains on the route of the tramlines but the main construction will not start until June-July. Nottingham: I suppose it had to happen – ‘tram surfing’. WAGON NEWS:

The four main freight operators have put forward a plan that would make the movement of freight more efficient around the country. Firstly, convert all main lines at 9’6’’ gauge, an example being the Trans- Pennine route, and some, especially the Channel Tunnel route at W12 gauge clearance. Another idea is to reinstate four track running and 60mph line speeds on the east coast main line. Thirdly better diversionary routes around London to aid in the movement of freight to all parts of the UK and beyond. GBRf would like to use Southampton container terminal, but as it is used by Freightliner this is under discussion. The new HXA coal hoppers keep arriving and now there are 73 examples, 370501-370573, while GBRf has taken delivery of 26 HYA coal hoppers from Romania, 371014/371016/371023-371040 and 371041- 371046 are on their way through the Channel Tunnel. Two rakes of the old HAA coal hoppers have received a blue stripe on the lower body side together with a Scottish flag logo.

WAGON REVIEW

NACCO 101.5t TEA Bogie Tank

This new design of bogie tank is a 101.5t gross laden weight wagon, which has only been introduced since 2002. These massive wagons were ordered by Imerys and built by Greenbrier Industries at the Wagona-Swidnica plant in Poland. There were 30 wagons built to the design code TE043A and the number series is NACO89100-89129. These wagons were built to replace the TIA and ICA ‘Silver Bullets’ which were used in the transport of kaolin slurry. On the sole bar can be seen the air pipe, air brake cylinder and distributor. The wagon is fitted with TF25 (Track Friendly) bogies built by Powell Duffryn.

SWINDON / BRISTOL AREA TRIP - 23 April 1972:

Our trip down memory lane goes back to the early diesel era just prior to TOPS renumbering and to the first trip undertaken by Trevor Roots as a newly joined member of the Worcester Locomotive Society. Having recently started work in late 1971 and now earning all of £7 a week as a trainee draughtsman, there was sufficient spare resources to travel further afield. Thus began a fruitful 3 years with trips to all parts of Britain, the only problem being the coach picked up at Birmingham New Street Station usually early on the Sat morning and Trevor lived in Tamworth. So began many overnight sleepless sessions on Birmingham NS having caught the last late night milk train…I was only 16 and those platform waiting shelters were really cosy !!! Sightings from Sunday the 3rd included 16029 on train 12327 the 14:37 Paris Nord to Compiegne, 16108 heading train 847934 the 15:26 Compiegne to Paris Nord, 15059 with train 1523 the 17:22 Paris Est to Epernay (which had a 30min late start due to loco failure and should have been a Fret BB22000) and 15044 powering train 1526 the 20:44 Epernay to Paris Est. The following day 26152 turned out for train 469 the 04:22 Mulhouse to Basel. Tuesday the 5th produced 15038 on train 1614 the 05:54 Metz to Bar le Duc (Bar-le-Duc is one of the big losers in the new timetable, with buses ferrying the hapless punters to connect with the TGVs for the most part), 15005 headed train 1700 the 07:56 Bar le Duc to Epernay, 15009 did train 1501 the 09:13

18 Epernay to Nancy, 26148 leading train 4232 the 12:47 Nancy to Dijon and, with an unexplained 30min late start 7239 powered train 17713 the 15:20 Dijon to Macon. On the 22nd 16007 failed at Gaillon while working train 3173 the 21:53 Paris St. Lazare to Le Havre. The train was rescued by 27075 which worked 18km to Val de Reuil, where the train was then caped & passengers transferred to another train. After this further delay 3173 then ran ECS. Co-incidentally 16007 is also the loco that failed at Creil on the 1st April and had to be dragged by 67253+67256. Noted in the Lille area on the 27th were 16637 heading the 13:38Lille to Lens via Don Sainghin, 16678 powering the 14:03 Lille to Boulogne via Hazebrouck, 16652 on the 15:40 Lille to Amiens and 16656 with the 16:02 Lille to Lens via Don Sainghin BB67000 Plenty of note this month, starting on the 7th 67524 did the 18:39 Longueville to Provins, 67515 handled the 18:53 Provins to Paris Est, 67520 worked the 19:28 Paris Est to Provins and 67607 headed the 20:10 Provins to Paris Est. Luxembourg Withdrawn electric 3001 has appeared inside the roundhouse at Luxembourg depot, it’s on accommodation bogies, just a shell with the blackened inside used for storage. I had thought it had been returned to the builder, but presumably it had been inside the works until recently. Of the old 800/850/900 series it would seem that maybe only 802/851/856/905/907 are left running; 802 can often be found at Esch and 856 is anticipated to be the museum lok. A visit to Luxembourg Depot at 18:30 on the 13th June found Roundhouse 1, 806/57/58 905/6/12 1810 3001/19 3612 4013/06/08 Roundhouse 2 802/4 904 1004/22/23/11 1817 3011/13/14/16 and an unidentified class 36XX in white undercoat, outside 851 1002 3004. Diesel 1806 has arrived in Denmark; 1801 and 1805 remain in Luxembourg for now. CFL Cargo have also acquired MX101, MY105, MX1029, MY1154 and maybe more, seemingly based at Padborg. Interesting photos can be found on http://www.digiphoto.dk/tog/thumbnails.php?album=lastup&cat=0&page=2

19 Portugal Diesel 1422 seems to have disappeared from the stored line next to Poceirão station, only 1442/57/54 1936 were there on the 16th. Where has it gone? Back to traffic vice withdrawn 1458 perhaps? As expected 2610 & 2612 have been transferred to Carga, with a 5600 to switch to IC in return, presumably 5609 although given the all over pink grafitti on this loco it will need some attention first! On the 18th 1411 worked the 07:25 Porto Campanha to Pochino, on it’s return 1413 was added at Regua and a spot of double heading was indulged in back to Porto Campanha, same day 1455 worked the train 893 the 09:15 Porto Sao Bento to Regua. Austria Hauled action from the 8th included 1016024 on train E1657 the 04:55 Salzburg to Vocklabruck, 1142633 with train 3264 the 06:25 Vocklabruck to Kammer Schorfling, 1116134 powered train 3043 the 07:27 Vocklabruck to Attnang Puchheim and 1116036 turned out on train 3006 the 08:34 Lambach to Attnang Puchheim. On the 23rd diesel 2050009 was working EZ 6992/6993 Erlebniszug Wachau Wien Südbahnhof- Krems ab der Donau and back, diesel haulage is very rare on this train which is normally booked a class 1046 electric, it sounded good, especially in tunnels on Vorortelinie! On June, 27th OeGEG-owned steam locomotive 77.28 returned to Austria, after having finished the overhaul at Cluj-Napoca, Romania. On Saturday, June 30th (and Sunday July 1st) 77.28 headed the 16:40 train from Amfplwang to Timelkam and back. Holland NS Reizigers [Passengers] are still short of motive power, recently they have reinstated withdrawn 1823/24/26/27/28/29/30/31/32. An article, in the current edition of the EM2 Society newsletter, says in addition to re-activating the nine withdrawn Class 1800s, NS Passengers have taken over a further nine class 1600s from Railion. Some of these have been stored because they were surplus to requirements (1607/08/10/17), others withdrawn due to damage (1605/20/22/25) and one that has been cannibalised (1618). In all cases they will be fully restored to passenger service. The article says they expect more Railion Class 1600s to become available when the Class 189s arrive later on in 2007. Railion are still using their 1600s on freight trains but I think they are now down to 12.

Switzerland RhB have ordered 15 units from Stadler Rail which will lead to withdrawal of Ge 4/4' 601-610 and some or all of Bernina line units 41-49. These units will be dual voltage and be classified ABe 4/12 Delivery will start in 2010. There is an option for a further 5 single voltage units to replace existing units 511-516. Action from the 16th included SNCF 26039 arriving with the 09:53 Strasbourg to Basle, 11304 powering the 12:04 Basle to Locarno (to Luzern), 11156 giving way at Luzern to 11300 on the 15:39 Locarno to Basel and 11147 working the 17:09 Zurich to Chiasso. Noted on the 17th June were 11191 on the 08:14 Basel to Vienna (to Zurich), 11223 leading the 11:16 Chur to Hamburg (from Zurich to Basle), 11302 powering the 14:02 Basle to Locarno (to SBB 11156 departs Erstfield for Zurich, Luzern), 11236 with 15:57 Luzern to Bern and Switzerland, 8 June 2007 11224 leading the 18:25 Milan to Basle (from Luzern). Spain Friday 1st June saw 333083 on Talgo train 12530/1 the 08:00 Salamanca to Barcelona Sants, 269419 with train 280 the 08:00 A Coruna to Hendaya, 269409 heading train 283 the 09:15 Bilbao to Abando to Vigo and 333091 powering train 413 the 13:20 Irun to Salamanca.

21 Diary of a Loco Spotter Eddie Rathmill - 1982 Part 1

This year I planned to clear the lot, but first an update on the wanted list: 2 x 03 (03017/197), 19 x 08, 1 x 09 (09006), 2 x 20 (20110/203), 3 x 26 (26039/040/044) 1 x 27 (27003), 1 x 31 (31258), 6 x 33, 5 x 37, 4 x 73 (73105/112/130/131) Total: 44

The first trip was to Crewe Works on January 16th. The Final batch of HSTs was awaiting a coat of paint and those up to 43188 were complete. I didn't expect to cop anything and in that I was right. On the 26th I decided that as I needed an 08 from Lincoln I would pay my first visit to Holmes Yard. 08242 was seen and also three 56s. I'd succeeded in my aim.

A 56 was copped at Knottingley on February 6th but I was definitely slowing down. I needed to go to the north of Scotland to stand a chance of getting any bulk sightings. (no chance now !!! …ed) With this thought in mind I booked a four-day holiday in Inverness, going out via Carlisle and Glasgow and returning via Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Newcastle. The trip was to be on March 4th. I had already planned two more trips in February, however, and on the 10th I set off once again to London, copping 08422 at Stratford and 09006, my last 09, at Norwood Junction. 33112 was also seen at Waterloo and I returned home well satisfied. Ten days later I was in London again, this time via Bristol (in the hope of seeing 31258). All I copped all day was 33114.

March 4th arrived and my wife and I set off for Manchester Victoria Station armed with two permits (one for IS and one for AB), a notebook and several cans of beer, plus a suitcase. 47448 was the haulage loco as far as Preston and then 87030 took over to Glasgow Central. A quick pint and a sandwich in Dows Bar and then we were at Queen St to be pulled by 47270 on the long haul north. 08620 was the first engine we saw on arriving at the Highland Capital and it was a cop. We were staying at the Station Hotel, right next to the station itself, and for three days I spent an hour each morning, an hour in the afternoon and half an hour each night watching the traffic. I've got to admit that I think Inverness is my favourite station, even to this day, and the Station Hotel certainly serves excellent meals. (it’s pretty quiet now…ed)

We returned home three days later; first being pulled by 26046 to Aberdeen, where I made a mad dash to visit the depot, and then by 47477 as far as Dundee. 26019 was the haulage to Edinburgh and then a change to an HST for the ride to York. Finally, 47471 took us back to Manchester Victoria. Over the four days in Scotland I copped 08620/08710/08753/08817/20110/26039 and 26044 but no sign of 27003.The Inverness foreman said that it was in the works. Also 08855 was missing from Aberdeen. Apparently this shunter was at Moss End. I refused to give up and wrote for a permit for St Rollox. Eleven days later I was over the border again, searching for my last 20, last 26 and last 27, this time on my own (My wife said I was mad and refused to have anything to do with the trip). I arrived at the works to be escorted round by a guide, the first engine I saw was 26040, what a start. There was no sign of 20203 or 27003, however, and I asked if the latter had gone back to Inverness (I was dreading the answer) "No, its never been here" was the reply, "It's in Derby Works “..!! One consolation was that I did see 08855 at Moss End Yard. The following day (Thursday) I looked at the Society magazine to find that there was a Midlands trip, including Derby Works and Toton, in two days. I rang up in hope, to find that there were still a few places left. Saturday, March 20th and I arrived home after a long day, having been to Derby, Toton, Nottingham, Westhouses, Shirebrook, Worksop, Barrow Hill and Buxton, 3 cops including two 56s and 27003, another class cleared.

It seemed ages now since I'd seen Tyne & Wear no. 4077 at York and so I decided to visit Newcastle to have a look at the Metro. 52 cars were seen, including 4077 again, and I decided that next time I came to the northeast I would visit the depot to try and clear them. Goole, next stop, on April 8th and just one class 56 cop and then it was off to Bournemouth on a Special from Moston. Upon arrival I sprinted over the bridge to catch the next service back to Eastleigh in the hope of seeing 08831. Unfortunately it wasn't there and I didn't cop a loco all day.

To Shirebrook on the 10th and just two 56s copped. Then a week later, a re-visit to East Anglia to search for 03197 and 08549. An excellent day saw me copping the former at Great Yarmouth and the latter at Crown Point. ADB968014/ADB968015 were also seen and I was very pleased with the trip. (to be cont.)
