  • Impact of COVID-19 on EAC Transport and Logistics Sector
The Voice of the Private Sector in East Africa EABC BRIEF IMPACT OF COVID-19 #BeyondCovid19 ON EAC TRANSPORT & #EABCCares #Covid19EA LOGISTICS SECTOR EAST AFRICAN BUSINESS COUNCIL Issued: 14.04.2020 1.0 TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS IN THE EAC Preamble ■ The Covid-19 pandemic is creating shocks to trade flows due to transport and logistics disruptions. Currently, China occupies 60% of world supply and demand, 65% of world manufacturing, and 41% of world manufacturing exports (Baldwin & di Mauro, 2020). Wuhan, the origin city of COVID-19, is ranked as 13th out of 2000 Chinese cities by Bloomberg for its role in international supply chains and the 9th best-performing city of China according to the Milken Institute ranking. ■ With 3 national development zones, 4 scientific and technological development parks accommodating over 350 research institutes, 1656 hi-tech enterprises, and numerous enterprise incubators, the city received investments from 230 Fortune Global 500 firms (Bloomberg, 2020). This clearly indicates the scale of ripple effects to be generated due to the lock-down of Wuhan, let alone the other production cities. A global supply chain shock beginning with production shocks primarily in China is spilling over to EAC economies. 2.0 EXPECTED DISRUPTIONS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC Impact on Slower Clearance Restricted of cargo at Sea Movement of Breakdown of Transport & Ports; Mombasa & People as supply chains due Logistics will have Dar es Salaam and countries shut- to severe a ripple effect on OSBPs. down airports and disruption in key economic restrict the entry of inbound and sectors such as international outbound logistics manufacturing, Covid-19 related passengers.

Journal of Air Transportation Vol. 11, No. 1 -2006 THE DEVELOPMENT OF JOMO KENYATTA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AS A REGIONAL AVIATION HUB Evaristus M. Irandu University of Nairobi Nairobi, Kenya Dawna L. Rhoades Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach, Florida ABSTRACT Air transportation plays an important role in the social and economic development of the global system and the countries that seek to participate in it. As Africa seeks to take its place in the global economy, it is increasingly looking to aviation as the primary means of connecting its people and goods with the world. It has been suggested that Africa as a continent needs to move toward a system of hubs to optimize its scarce resources. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the airports in the eastern region of Africa that is seeking to fill this role. This paper discusses the prospects for success and the challenges that it will need to overcome, including projections through 2020 for the growth in passenger and cargo traffic. _____________________________________________________________________________ Evaristus M. Irandu received his Ph.D. in Transport Geography from the University of Nairobi. He is a Senior Lecturer and formerly, the Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the University of Nairobi. He teaches Economic and Transport Geography, International Tourism and Tourism Management, at both undergraduate and graduate level. His research interests include: aviation planning, liberalization of air transport, non-motorized transport, urban transport, international tourism and ecotourism. His research work has appeared in several journals such as Anatolia: An International Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research, Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism Research and Environment and Culture.

  • Market Report
BCD Travel Research and Intelligence What you need to know: Airline operations: Middle East April 3, 2020 As demand declines and governments around the world restrict travel, airlines are adjusting their operations, and, in some cases, suspending all services. This report summarizes what airlines in the Middle East are doing and planning. Major carriers Airline Action and plans Emirates Most passenger operations suspended from March 25. Flights to five European destinations resuming on April 6 Etihad Airways All flights suspended from March 26, initially for 14 days Qatar Airways Most flights continue, serving passengers transiting through Doha Turkish Airlines All international and some domestic routes suspended until May 1 Emirates resuming some flights after suspending most passenger operations Emirates suspended most passenger operations from March 25, with no date in place for their resumption.1 It had been trying to maintain these flights as long as possible, to help travelers return home. But increasing travel restrictions – including the March 19 suspension of all entry visas to the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.) – forced it to curtail its operations substantially. Emirates will continue to operate a small number of passenger flights to a limited number of countries, as long as their borders stay open and demand remains. The airline will resume suspended services once countries reopen their borders and travel confidence returns. Emirates is already looking forward to a gradual resumption of passenger services as travel and operational restrictions are lifted. It has received approval to resume services to Brussels, Frankfurt, London, Paris and Zurich from April 6.2 It will offer four flights per week to Heathrow and three to each of the other destinations.
