The specific objectives included the following: To examine the positive impact of globalization on the development of Kenya Airways; To examine the negative impact of globalization on the development of Kenya Airways; To examine the effect of globalization on Kenya Airways market expansion strategies. This research was a case study on Kenya Airways. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were utilized. The positive impacts include the expansion of global airline markets to which other local and international airlines can access. For Kenya Airways, this means the expansion in passenger numbers, resulting in the expansion of the airline's annual revenues. The negative impact of globalization on the airline sector on the development of Kenya Airways include high costs of operations, high costs of fuel, increased domestic and international competition, and restrictive and stringent BASA agreements. The main strategies used by Kenya Airways to develop in the face of globalization include Route expansion, airports expansion and modernization and strategic alliances. This study concludes globalization has had a more positive impact on the development of Kenya Airways than negative effects. This study recommends that Kenya Airways should engage in fuel hedging that is pegged 5% volatility margins above and below the market rate to avoid huge losses attributed to fuel costs and mitigate the cost of failures of previous open-ended hedging that was disastrous for the airline. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to acknowledge my supervisor Maurice Mashiwa for wonderful guidance during the process of writing this thesis. Cultural contacts and mobility between the south central Mediterranean and the Aegean during the second half of the 3rd millennium BC ALBERTO CAZZELLA, ANTHONY PACE AND GIULIA RECCHIA Abstract One of the effects of the reconfiguration of world prehistoric chronolo- gies as a result of radiocarbon dating has been the questioning of hith- erto established frameworks of connectivity and the movement of peo- ple, materials and ideas in prehistory. This contribution revisits issues of connectivity between the south-central Mediterranean region and the Aegean during the Early Bronze Age. This short study highlights the need for scholars to re-examine connectivity using, as an example, diagnostic archaeological evidence of intra-regional links between South Italy, Sic- ily and Malta and the Aegean, that was not affected by carbon dating. The paper suggests that while broader regional patterns of connectivity may have benefited from revised chronologies of world prehistory, mi- cro-regional cultural links may require new explanations of crossings and the evident movement of commodities by land and by sea. Radiocarbon dating and the re-examination of diffusionist thinking during the post World War II decades raised several questions concern- ing the nature of cultural contact across the Mediterranean during late prehistory. Seminal work by Colin Renfrew (1973) on the effects of new chronologies, served to emphasise the discordant cultural links that older dating frameworks had suggested. Access to ast Africa from rope and elsewhere in the world is aso greatly enhanced by air transport, which need not follow the deviating contours of the continent. Businesses with b:'enches throughout @set Africa need fast assenger services to carry executives on supervisory visits; perishable commodities, important items for repair of key machlner, and )ivestock for breeding purposes provide further traffic; and a valuable tourist traffic is much dependent upon air transport. The direction and coordination of civil aviation, to help assure the quality and amplitude of aerodromes, aeraio directiona and communications methods, and aircraft safety standards, is an important responsibility which logically fsIs under a central authority. This central authority is the Directorate of Oivil Aviation, a department of the ast Africa High Commission. The Directorate, as an interterritorlal service already in existence, came under the administration of the High Oommisslon on its effective date of inception, January I, 98, an more specifically under the Commissioner for Transport, one of the four principal executive officers of the High Commission, on May I, 199.
