A major remodel in 1909–1910 enlarged the wings of the building and replaced the building’s original dome with a more elongated one. New Hampshire State House, 107 North Main Street, Concord, NH 03303 Year completed**: 1819 Architectural style: Greek Revival FYI: The stately eagle installed on top of the New Hampshire State House’s dome may look gold, but it’s actually brass. The original was removed for preservation and is on display at the New Hampshire Historical Society. A new, gold-leafed eagle was put in its place around 1969. Vermont State House, 115 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05633 Year completed**: 1859 Architectural style: Renaissance Revival FYI: The senate chamber still has its original furnishings, plus working gas lamps, and a “gasolier”—a gaslight chandelier that was rediscovered elsewhere in 1979, refurbished, and reinstalled in the chamber. New York State Capitol, State St. and Washington Ave, Albany, NY 12224 Year completed**: 1899 Architectural style: Italian Renaissance/French Renaissance/Romanesque FYI: The Western staircase inside New York’s capitol has been dubbed the “Million Dollar Staircase,” because it cost more than a million dollars to build—in the late-1800s, no less.

The Lowry Hill Neighborhood Historic Context Study Prepared for the Lowry Hill Residents Inc. by Landscape Research LLC 2006 The Lowry Hill Neighborhood of Minneapolis Historic Context Study Prepared for Lowry Hill Residents Inc. (LHRI) Minneapolis, MN by Carole S. Zellie Landscape Research LLC 1466 Hythe Street St. Paul, MN 55108 2006 Management Summary The Lowry Hill neighborhood bridges the northern tip of Lake of the Isles across the upland and steep bluff that extends toward the southwestern edge of downtown Minneapolis. Long before electric streetcars connected the area with downtown or the lakeshore was transformed from marshland to parkway, Thomas Lowry envisioned a landscape of large, handsome houses set along wide, tree-lined streets. By 1910 much of this residential landscape was complete, and development continued until about 1930. During this period, the success of E. Lake of the Isles Boulevard improvements and electric streetcar connections along Hennepin and Douglas Avenues invited construction of many high-quality, single-family houses as well as apartment buildings. This historic context study was commissioned by Lowry Hill Residents Inc. (LHRI). Carole S. Zellie of Landscape Research LLC conducted the research and prepared the report. The historic contexts examine the components of neighborhood development that created the architectural and landscape framework of today’s neighborhood. The focus is residential development, especially between ca. 1874 and 1930, with separate sections on apartment building construction and commercial and institutional development. Another chapter provides short biographies of many of the area’s leading architects. The East Isles neighborhood, which shares a similar pattern of development along Lake of the Isles, is the subject of a companion study conducted for the East Isles Residents Association (EIRA).

  • The State Capitol Its Art and Architecture
Slide 1 The State Capitol Its Art and Architecture Original Slide Show – Carolyn Howe Porter Script– Martha (Porter) Kilgour Narrator – Sarah Kilgour Capitol Lakes, May 4, 2017 Unknown source View from the Capitol 100 years ago Slide 2 Martha Kilgour Source: Kilgour family (# ? Martha Kilgour) When I was a child, my favorite story was about children who found a wonderful treasure in an old trunk in the attic. I love this story, but I knew it would never happen to me because I’d seen everything in our family trunks and it wasn’t treasure. Interesting... perhaps... and odd... but hardly treasure. After I had small children of my own, my aunt moved from her home of 50 years and left an old family trunk in her attic. In the bottom of this trunk was a flat box, and in it was a packet of things I had never seen before... pictures of the 4th Capitol while it was being built ....and letters addressed to my grandmother, Carolyn Howe Porter (next slide) Slide 3 Carolyn Porter Unknown source The letters were from artists and sculptors who had decorated the Capitol...artists like Karl Bitter, Kenyon Cox, Edwin Blashfield, Atillio Piccirilli, and Daniel Chester French. In these letters they told my grandmother about themselves and what they envisioned when they designed the murals and sculpture. There was also a script in the trunk. It was for a lantern slide lecture that Grandmother had developed from the letters and talking with the men who decorated the Capitol. At that time, prior to television, radio, & computers, the people who built this capitol saw it as an opportunity educate the people of Wisconsin about government and citizenship.

Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of The University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts The University of Texas at Austin August 2011 Abstract The Architectural Sculpture of Ivan Meštrović in Relation to Adolf von Hildebrand's The Problem of Form in the Fine Arts Elaine Dezember Ritchel, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 Supervisor: Linda D. Henderson This thesis investigates the relationship between the architectural sculpture of Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and late nineteenth-century aesthetic theory. Most scholarship on Meštrović emphasizes his Croatian heritage and his ties with the Vienna Secessionists and French sculptor Auguste Rodin. While acknowledging that these were important sources for Meštrović, this thesis also seeks to elucidate his shift in style during the first decade of the twentieth century and his continued commitment to clarity of form in his architectural sculpture. An in-depth look at Meštrović’s Kosovo Pavilion, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Mount Avala near Belgrade, Serbia, and wood reliefs at the Kaštelet chapel in Split, Croatia in terms of German sculptor Adolf von Hildebrand’s 1893 treatise The Problem of Form in the Fine Arts reveals significant parallels between Meštrović’s work and Hildebrand’s ideas.
