“Come to know this great saint Thomas Aquinas” this coming Wednesday, 6pm at St. Theresa Church ST. THOMAS AQUINAS: The Theologian THE LIFE & TEACHING of ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Thomas Aquinas was a Dominican friar, a priest, a scholar, a theologian, and a saint. The earliest biographies of Thomas show us a man of prayer who avidly sought personal contact with the living God. He prayed, worshiped, and celebrated the Eucharist as a Dominican friar and priest. He was also a servant of the Church. Commissioned by the pope, he composed liturgical texts for the feast of Corpus Christi; we still sing his Eucharistic hymns. He compiled for the pope a "Golden Chain" of the Church Fathers' commentaries on the four Gospels. In an effort to deepen the unity of the Church and to heal the schism between East and West, he responded to texts of Greek theologians on the Trinity. As a member of the Order of Preachers, he preached eloquently and with great erudition, and we still have a number of his sermons, which were delivered largely to students and faculty at the University of Paris and other universities. Thomas was also an enthusiastic interpreter of Scripture. He was deeply familiar with the ways Scripture reasons, and with the realities about which Scripture speaks. In his theological works, he quoted biblical texts profusely. For example, in the second part alone of his Summa theologiae, Aquinas amazingly cites over half of the chapters of the Old Testament, in addition to his numerous quotations of New Testament books. His scriptural commentaries include line by-line works on all the letters of Paul, the Gospels of Matthew and John, Jeremiah and Isaiah, Job and Lamentations, and some of the Psalms. In these commentaries, he draws upon the earlier commentaries of the Fathers and adds his own insight into the flow of the biblical texts, often interpreting Scripture by means of Scripture. Thomas was a man of political and ethical insight. He wrote commentaries on Aristotle's Politics and Nicomachean Ethics, and reflected deeply upon the nature of government, law, and justice, not least in pondering the Wisdom of the Mosaic Law He was also a philosopher in the highest sense, namely. Someone who aspires to learn the highest causes of things in studying the causes of physical things and the divine source fall things. Aquinas wrote lengthy commentaries on Aristotle's Physic and Metaphysic, Dionysius the Areopagite's Divine Names, and the neo- Platonic work Book of Caus. Thomas was not only a philosopher and theologian, but also a mystic. He wrote about the contemplative life, spiritual ecstasy and rapture. According to his friends and biographers, his life included powerful mystical experiences in which he expressed a complete desire for union with God. At the end of his life, he described his writings as "straw" in comparison with what he had seen in a spiritual vision.
