Morrill, the Edward A. Malloy Professor of Roman Catholic Studies at Vanderbilt University (Nashville, Tennessee), specializes in sacramental–liturgical theology, drawing upon a range of interdisciplinary resources in the fields of systematic and historical theology, ritual studies, cultural anthropology, and biblical studies. His other strongly related interest is in political theologies investigating the problems of suffering in social contexts. This work has come together most comprehensively in his books Divine Worship and Human Healing: Liturgical Theology at the Margins of Life and Death (Liturgical Press, 2009) and Anamnesis as Dangerous Memory: Political and Liturgical Theology in Dialogue (Liturgical Press, 2000). More recent titles include Encountering Christ in the Eucharist: The Paschal Mystery in People, Word, and Sacrament (Paulist Press, 2012) and The Essential Writings of Bernard Cooke: A Narrative Theology of Church, Sacrament, and Ministry (Paulist Press, 2016). His current research and writing projects include a typology of liturgical remembering and a mystical–political theology of Easter. A Jesuit priest, his academic degrees include an M.A. in anthropology (Columbia University) and Ph.D. in religion (Emory University). He has lectured widely in North America, Europe, and Australia, and is currently president of the North American Academy of Liturgy. vii Preface to ”Sacramental Theology” In the second half of the twentieth century, sacrament emerged as a vital topic within the ressourcement movements of Western European Catholic theology. This overlapped with the ecumenical liturgical movement already in progress for a half-century. Scholarship attentive to multiple sources in early Christianity—philosophical, historical, homiletic, liturgical, pastoral—rescued sacramental symbol and ritual from merely being an object of clerical ministration, passive lay reception, and canonical regulation to becoming a key for understanding divine human encounter in the mission of the church and the lives of its members. Recovering the ancient, as well as best of medieval, theology of sacramental rites as sacred mysteries, European and North American theologians enlisted contemporary phenomenological and hermeneutical philosophies to explain and promote sacraments not as clerically delivered objects but, rather, as profound human symbolic events of divine revelation. By the turn of the twenty-first century, the need for attention to the actual performance of specific rites and, thus, the need for historical, social–scientific, and other human disciplines—in addition to philosophy—had become well established. This now makes the work of sacramental theology an ongoing point of attention in multiple cross-disciplinary theories attentive to actual contexts, both historical and contemporary, of sacramental–liturgical practices. Insofar as Christian sacraments only exist in symbolic–ritual performances, the field of liturgical studies (itself multidisciplinary, including ritual and performance theories) has proven increasingly integral to sacramental–theological work. Attention to historical and current practices of Christian symbol and ritual (liturgy and sacraments) nonetheless returns continuously to philosophical–theological theories that meet the intellectual need to reflect upon divine presence and absence, personal and communal experiences of God, of Christ, of the Spirit, scripture and tradition, the ecclesial or communal dimension of sacramental celebrations, types of power at work in the rites, liturgical participation, and more. Thus, sacramental theology proves expansive in the range of the Christian existence it addresses, even as the bodily nature of the subject matter requires constant theoretical reconsiderations attentive to historical, social, and cultural contexts. The essays in this volume begin with profound philosophical perspectives on personal and communal sacramental experience, expanding from traditional cosmology to evolutionary and chaos theories of our planetary existence, continuing with shifts—especially among youth—to interreligious and non-institutional perspectives, then on to change in popular notions of guilt and social–ethical issues in relation to liturgical theology, so as finally to return to fundamental theological reflection on human sacramentality and divine revelation. The second part of the discussion seeks to develop an alternate phenomenological account of eucharistic experience that takes Eucharist seriously as a corporeal and communal phenomenon that is encountered within a liturgical horizon and which requires a liturgical intentionality to be prepared for and directed toward it. Edited by Scott Davidson and Frédéric Seyler. Evanston, Illinois: 2019, 266 p. Michel Henry is perhaps most often cited by contemporary Laruelleans such as John Ó Maoilearca, Katerina Kolozova, Anthony Paul Smith and Alexander Galloway – indeed, François Laruelle's system of non-standard philosophy and its univocal radical immanence is highly indebted to Henry's non-representationalism. Admittedly, in contrast to Laruelle's "heretical" Christology, Henry's theological-realist determination is astricted by the idealist paralogisms of a cogitativist Ego, which transpires most markedly in Henry's account of Faith – after all, Henry is a Jesuit phenomenologist following in the tradition of Jean-Luc Marion and Jean-Louis Chretien. Nonetheless, Henry's work on immanence – deanthropo- centrized and universalized as generic – takes us much further than both Spinoza's specula- tive immanence, which is diluted by the necessitarian world of negative determination, and Deleuzian immanence, which is characterized by multiplicitous difference. In The Michel Henry Reader, editors Scott Davidson and Frédéric Seyler weave together a comprehensive anthology of essays that survey Henry's phenomenology of life, stitching together an oeuv- re than spans Marxist political philosophy, phenomenology of language, subjectivity and aesthetics, and ethics qua religion. Rather than analyzing specific objects and phenomena, phenomenology is tasked with disclosing the structural manifestation and conditioned appearance of objects. Drawing primarily from Husserl and, consequently, Heidegger, Henry examines a kind of "pure phenomenology" that, contra intentionality and the inert world of visible objects, examines affectivity's "radical invisibility" (Henry 2019, xii).

Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

    5 Mass Moment: Part 23 THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER (Anaphora). After the acclamation (the Holy, Holy, Holy), the congregation kneels while the priest, standing with arms outstretched, offers up the prayer (Anaphora) directly addressed to God the Father. This indicates even more clearly that the whole body directs its prayer to the Father only through its head, Christ. The Anaphora is the most solemn part of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, during which the offerings of bread and wine are consecrated as the body and blood of Christ. There are four main Eucharistic Prayers, also called Canon (I, II, III, IV). However, there are also four for Masses for Various Needs (I, II, III, IV) and two for Reconciliation (I, II). They are purely biblical in theology and in language, they possess a rich overtone from its Latin origins. At Fordham University my then-girlfriend Cathy (now my wife) would take me to lunch with Father Clarke, then in his late eighties, a spry gnome-like character who would re- gale us with his intellectual adventures of bringing St. Thomas to every conceivable endeavor. Upon his mentioning a lunch date with the Dalai Lama, I asked him what he had said. Father Clarke looked at us and said very seriously, “I told him, ‘You have wonderful medi- tative practices, but your metaphysics are terrible!’” The Thomist of the Strict Observance then attempted, well, to enlighten him. I’m not sure I agreed with everything Father Clarke said about metaphysics or Thomas Aquinas, but that impulse to bring Thomism to bear on intellectual projects and problems out there in the world was remarkable to me. The tribe of old-fashioned Thomists is often logos 21:4 fall 2018 6 logos fiercely protective of their master in such a way as to ward off any- body attempting to bring him out of the thirteenth, the greatest of centuries, and into our own milieu. Cacioppo University of Chicago Anthropomorphism describes the tendency to imbue the real or imagined behavior of nonhuman agents with humanlike characteristics, motivations, intentions, or emotions. Although surprisingly common, anthropomorphism is not invariant. This article describes a theory to explain when people are likely to anthropomorphize and when they are not, focused on three psychological determinants—the accessibility and applicability of anthropocentric knowledge (elicited agent knowledge), the motivation to explain and understand the behavior of other agents (effectance motivation), and the desire for social contact and affiliation (sociality motivation). This theory predicts that people are more likely to anthropomorphize when anthropocentric knowledge is accessible and applicable, when motivated to be effective social agents, and when lacking a sense of social connection to other humans. These factors help to explain why anthropomorphism is so variable; organize diverse research; and offer testable predictions about dispo- sitional, situational, developmental, and cultural influences on anthropomorphism.
