Yocum This dissertation examines the conception of sin and the practice of penance among Catholics in the United States from 1955 to 1975. It begins with a brief historical account of sin and penance in Christian history, indicating the long tradition of performing penitential acts in response to the identification of one’s self as a sinner. The dissertation then considers the Thomistic account of sin and the response of penance, which is understood both as a sacrament (which destroys the sin) and as a virtue (the acts of which constitute the matter of the sacrament but also extend to include non-sacramental acts). This serves to provide a framework for understanding the way Catholics in the United States identified sin and sought to amend for it by use of the sacrament of penance as well as non-sacramental penitential acts of the virtue of penance.

    Official Communique 13 Presentation of the decree of the CCCB on the application of the norms of Misericordia Dei My dear fellow priests, It is five years now since I presented to you the letter Misericordia Dei of Pope John Paul II, and provided you with some guidelines for the practice of the ministry of reconciliation while reserving the right to return to the subject once the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments had confirmed the decree that the CCCB intended to put before it. Some revisions and several meetings between the representatives of the CCCB and the Holy See were necessary before the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops received from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments the recognitio requested following a vote by more than a two- thirds majority of the members of the Conference. It was actually on January 18th last that the Conference received the confirmation of its decree. You will find as an appendix the text of the decree in French and English. This decree of the Conference confirms the exceptional character of general absolution and specifies the conditions for it even more precisely. You will realize that the necessary conditions do not obtain in our diocese to enable me to authorize recourse to this third form of the sacrament of penance. In this respect, nothing has changed in what I said to you in my letter of February 9th, 2005 in which I informed you of my decision to give no further approval to the adoption of general absolution.

    1 Notes for Chapter Seven 7–A: Pastors’ responsibility to know well those they serve Priests really need to be out and about, to be seen by their people. In former days, some priests in city parishes got their exercise by taking a walk, each day in a different direction, occasionally dropping in on someone to chat a few minutes. Being approachable is very important, and that means not having a lifestyle that is economically beyond people. Father Star really wants to lead his flock effectively, not just provide pastoral services. The people cannot be expected to follow him unless they respect and trust him. The necessary presupposition of that is that they know him, not simply recognize him as “priest assigned to our parish,” but become acquainted with him as the particular person he is. So, he personalizes his homilies, because celebrating the liturgy and preaching provide the only opportunity for most people in the parish to get to know him. At the same time, he does not try to get to know many of his people as distinct individuals. Visiting households at the rate of one a day would not get him to everyone in three years, and he wouldn’t really get to know people while doing that. Talking with people after Mass results in getting to know a few—but the same few take up a lot of time with no real payoff. People who want services come to the rectory—between one and two percent of the people in the parish in the course of the year, and he gets to know some of these—all too well.

    Saint John Paul II (1978-2005) His Holiness John Paul II (16 Oct. 1978-2 April 2005) was the first Slav and the first non-Italian Pope since Hadrian VI. Karol Wojtyla was born on 18 May 1920 at Wadowice, an industrial town south-west of Krakow, Poland. His father was a retired army lieutenant, to whom he became especially close since his mother died when he was still a small boy. Joining the local primary school at seven, he went at eleven to the state high school, where he proved both an outstanding pupil and a fine sportsman, keen on football, swimming, and canoeing (he was later to take up skiing); he also loved poetry, and showed a particular flair for acting. In 1938 he moved with his father to Krakow where he entered the Jagiellonian University to study Polish language and literature; as a student he was prominent in amateur dramatics, and was admired for his poems. When the Germans occupied Poland in September 1939, the university was forcibly closed down, although an underground network of studies was maintained (as well as an underground theatrical club which he and a friend organised). Thus he continued to study incognito, and also to write poetry. In winter 1940 he was given a labourer’s job in a limestone quarry at Zakrówek, outside Krakow, and in 1941 was transferred to the water- purification department of the Solway factory in Borek Falecki; these experiences were to inspire some of the more memorable of his later poems. In 1942, after his father’s death and after recovering from two near-fatal accidents, he felt the call to the priesthood, began studying theology clandestinely and after the liberation of Poland by the Russian forces in January 1945 was able to rejoin the Jagiellonian University openly.

    Twenty-five U.S. bishops may retire WASHINGTON (CNS) — Up to 25 U.S. bishops, including five cardinals, could retire because of age this year. There are 14 still-active U.S. bishops, including three cardinals, who have already turned 75. Eleven more, including two cardinals, will celebrate their 75th birthday in 2007. At age 75 bishops are requested to submit their resignation to the pope. Cardinal Adam J. Maida of Detroit turned 75 March 18, 2005. He was bishop of Green Bay, Wis., before he was made archbishop of Detroit in 1990. He has been a cardinal since 1994. Cardinal William H. Keeler of Baltimore turned 75 last March 4. Formerly bishop of Harrisburg, Pa., he has been archbishop of Baltimore since 1989 and a cardinal since 1994. Cardinal Bernard F. Law, archpriest of St. Mary Major Basilica in Rome and a cardinal since 1985, turned 75 Nov. 4. A former bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Mo., he was archbishop of Boston from 1984 until his resignation in 2002 in the wake of the clergy sex abuse scandal there. He was named to his Rome post in 2004. Cardinal Edward M. Egan of New York, whose 75th birthday is coming up April 2, will celebrate 50 years as a priest later this year. He was made a New York auxiliary bishop in 1985, bishop of Bridgeport, Conn., in 1988, archbishop of New York in 2000 and a cardinal in 2001. Cardinal F. James Stafford, a Baltimore native who will mark his 75th birthday July 26, has been the Vatican’s major penitentiary since 2003.
