SUBMITTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY THE FACULTY OF DIVINITY THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW OCTOBER 1996 ABSTRACT This study aims to show that when the religious dimension of the women's suffrage movement is considered, it can be seen that while the Scottish Presbyterian Churches at an official level remained neutral in their attitudes, the ministers and members of the Churches gave significant and varied support to the campaign, and their efforts contributed to the success of the suffrage movement. Although the term 'the religious dimension' includes both positive and negative responses to the movement in the Churches, this thesis concentrates on the positive efforts which were made. Chronologically, it covers the period from the official founding of the national suffrage organisations in 1867 to the enfranchisement of women in 1918. In surveying the history of the movement, account will be taken of both male and female contributions to the cause. This thesis consists of seven chapters. Chapter I surveys previous studies and outlines the scope of this piece of research. Chapter II contexualises the role and status of women within the Church and within society during the period which the thesis covers. In particular, it examines the relationship between women's religious suffrage and the women's political franchise movement, and e~~plores factors contributing to the Churches' concern for women's suffrage. Chapter III reconsiders the involvement of the Churches and their members in the suffrage movement prior to 1900, focusing particularly on Bright's Bill (1870-1873) and Woodall's Amendment (1884). Chapter IV examines the attitudes of the Churches and religious leaders to the tactics of the mili tant suffragettes. Chapter V investigates both the extent of responses to the movement from presbyteries and their members, and the content of the debates on women's suffrage in the Church courts. Chapter VI examines the significance of the Scottish Churches League for Woman Suffrage wi thin both the Churches and the suffrage movement. Chapter VII concludes the study by considering the significance of the religious dimension of the struggle for votes for women. Whilst working at hospitals in Scotland, Elsie was shocked to discover how poor the care provided to poorer female patients was. She knew this was not right, so set up a tiny hospital in Edinburgh just for women, often not accepting payment. Disgusted by what she had seen, Elsie joined the women’s suffrage campaign in 1900, and campaigned for women’s rights all across Scotland, with some success. In August 1914, the suffrage campaign was suspended, with all efforts redirected towards war. But the prejudices of Edwardian Britain were hard to break. When Elsie offered to take an all-female medical unit to the front in 1914, the War Office told her: “My good lady, go home and sit still.” But Elsie refused to sit still. She offered help to France, Belgium and Serbia instead – and in November 1914 dispatched the first of 14 all-women medical units to Serbia, to assist the war effort. Her Scottish Women’s Hospitals went on to recruit more than 1,500 women – and 20 men – to treat thousands in France, Serbia, Corsica, Salonika, Romania, Russia and Malta.

    A more unusual focus in your magazine this College St Anne’s year: architecture and the engineering skills that make our modern buildings possible. The start of our new building made this an obvious choice, but from there we go on to look at engineering as a career and at the failures and University of Oxford follies of megaprojects around the world.
