Race saw Michigan in its full Autumn dress—a beautiful riot of color! All activities were so very well planned, there was wonderful coopera­ tion from the contestants and all per­ sons who assisted in any way. It was a successful and enjoyable event, with which to finish our Ninety-Nine racing activities for the season. In attending the Michigan Chapter meeting after the finish of the race, I learned of their aim for this year. MARK WILSON) History has forgotten animation, and film companies are often complicit in failing to acknowledge its influence on our social and cultural history. Walt Disney came of age in the film industry during the Golden Age of Hollywood, an era that coincided with a world stage set for war and conflict. The threat of Nazi Germany was felt both home and abroad, and the United States struggled with indecision on whether or not to support its European allies or remain isolationist. When the Second World War began, the American response was lukewarm with Lend-Lease being the only acceptable political means of interference in the European conflict. Walt Disney, struggling over lack of profits due to war-related distribution overseas, sought US Government contracts for morale and instructional films to keep his company afloat and his artists paid. Though Disney’s popularity and success in Hollywood in the late 1930s should have made him an easy sell to politicians, he was largely met with distrust over questions of cost and the future viability of animation in government use.

    “When You Wish Upon a Star”—Cliff Edwards (recorded 1938, released 1940) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by James M. Bohn (guest essay)* Cliff Edwards Given the dramatic contour of the melody, and the well-crafted, optimistic message of the lyrics, the success of “When You Wish Upon a Star” is not surprising. It won an Academy Award for Best Song, was named by ASCAP as the most performed feature film standard, and was declared the seventh greatest song from a movie by the American Film Institute. The tune has also become a corporate anthem for The Walt Disney Company, suitably encapsulating the company’s common theme of dreams and wishes. However, this use of corporate exploitation in no way diminishes the perfection of this well-crafted song, its sentiment, or its impeccable performance. Born in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1895, Cliff Edwards started singing in saloons when he was 14 years old. He took up the ukulele, as he had no one to accompany him, and it was the cheapest accompanying instrument he could find. Dubbed “Ukulele Ike” by a waiter at Chicago’s Arsonia Café, who had trouble remembering his name, the nickname stuck for the rest of his career. He took to the vaudeville circuit with pianist Bob Carleton, later joining Joe Frisco as part of his headlining act. Edwards started recording in 1919, signing with Pathé Records the following year. In the ‘20s he had recordings on Banner, Columbia, Perfect, and Regal as well. By 1922, he was performing in a blackface act with Lou Clayton, a practice that has been considered reprehensible for the past half century, but was a common form of popular entertainment in the early decades of the 20th century.

    “When You Wish Upon a Star”—Cliff Edwards (recorded 1938, released 1940) Added to the National Registry: 2009 Essay by Cary O’Dell Cliff Edwards Early sheet music Of the spectacularly impressive oeuvre of songs that makes up the Disney catalog (especially today in its post- Elton John era), few are as well-remembered or as beloved as “When You Wish Upon a Star.” It is the Disney company’s official theme song. And though it has been recorded by dozens and dozens of artists from Judy Collins to Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, Julie Andrews, Josh Groban, Barbara Cook, N*SYNC, Patti LaBelle, Louis Armstrong, and even Gene Simmons of KISS, it is the original by Cliff Edwards—subtle and unassuming—that seems to endure. “When You Wish” was written by Leigh Harline with lyrics by Ned Washington for Disney’s 1940 animated classic “Pinocchio.” Harline (1907-1969), a former music director for an LA radio station, began working for Disney in the 1930s, composing music for the company’s “Silly Symphonies.” Later, he would co-write some of Disney’s best known, most cherished songs including “Whistle While You Work,” “Heigh-Ho,” and “Some Day My Prince Will Come.” After leaving Disney, Harline would go on to write scores for such films as “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer” with Shirley Temple and “Monkey Business” with Marilyn Monroe. Lyricist Ned Washington (1901-1976) began his career in vaudeville and on Tin Pan Alley before moving to Hollywood in 1934. There he would write scores for such films as “Dumbo,” “The Greatest Show on Earth” and “Miss Sadie Thompson.” Some of his most famous compositions include “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You” and the theme from “High Noon.” Singer and entertainer Cliff Edwards was born in 1895 in Hannibal, Missouri.
