DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE HEADQUARTERS UNITED STATES AIR FORCE Air Force Historical Studies Office 28 June 2011 Errata Sheet for the Air Force History and Museum Program publication: With Courage: the United States Army Air Forces in WWII, 1994, by Bernard C. Nalty, John F. Shiner, and George M. Watson. Page 215 Correct: Second Lieutenant Lloyd D. Hughes To: Second Lieutenant Lloyd H. Hughes Page 218 Correct Lieutenant Hughes To: Second Lieutenant Lloyd H. Hughes Page 357 Correct Hughes, Lloyd D., 215, 218 To: Hughes, Lloyd H., 215, 218 Foreword In the last decade of the twentieth century, the United States Air Force commemorates two significant benchmarks in its heritage. The first is the occasion for the publication of this book, a tribute to the men and women who served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War 11. The four years between 1991 and 1995 mark the fiftieth anniversary cycle of events in which the nation raised and trained an air armada and com- mitted it to operations on a scale unknown to that time. With Courage: U.S.Army Air Forces in World War ZZ retells the story of sacrifice, valor, and achievements in air campaigns against tough, determined adversaries. It describes the development of a uniquely American doctrine for the application of air power against an opponent's key industries and centers of national life, a doctrine whose legacy today is the Global Reach - Global Power strategic planning framework of the modern U.S. Air Force. The narrative integrates aspects of strategic intelligence, logistics, technology, and leadership to offer a full yet concise account of the contributions of American air power to victory in that war.

A fascinating pre-World War II Soviet appraisal of Nazi Germany's Luftwaffe airplane fleet, its organization, and geographical distribution. The main body of the image is given over to illustrations of aircraft in various profiles along with their technical specifications. At the center of the poster is a map of Germany showing the country divided by airforce precinct, with the national headquarters in Berlin, and regional headquarters in Konigsberg, Dresden, Munich, Munster, and Kiel. To the left of that is a diagram of the organizational structure of German aviation. Clockwise from upper-left, the following aircraft are illustrated: Dornier Do 10 (C-4); Arado 65; Heinkel HD-37 (as with the Dornier Do C-4, the transliteration throughout the poster is hit or miss; here the HD 37 is written as "НД" even though that would translate to "ND", not "HD"); Heinkel HD 41; Autogyro C.30 (Focke-Wulf); Junkers Ju 52; Dornier Do Y; Rohrbach Ro V "Rocco"; Rohrbach Ro VIII "Roland"; Dornier Do J "Wal"; Junkers Ju 160; Heinkel HD 55; Junkers K 37; Junkers W 34; Heinkel HE 12; Albatros L 78; Junkers G 38. • Ju 52 Airliner 4423 GERMAN WWII TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT 1:144 SCALE PLASTIC KIT
Ju 52 airliner 4423 GERMAN WWII TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT 1:144 SCALE PLASTIC KIT intro The legendary Junkers Ju 52/3m was born in 1929 as a single engine transport for Bolivian airline LAB. The aircraft design got the well known three-engine recognition very quickly, and was produced for Lufthansa and other airlines during the thirties. The Ju 52 was acquired by the new German Luftwaffe in1934. The original purpose was for crew training, but because the Luftwaffe had its new Do 11 bombers delayed, the Ju 52 was fitted with full bomb equipment and more than 2/3 of the existing bomber squadrons used these "auxiliary bombers". They reached the frontline in 1936 as a part of the Condor legion in the Spanish civil war. In the late 30's when the Luftwaffe had enough modern bombers, the Ju 52s were assigned transport duties. The first Luftwaffe transport group was established in 1937 and when WW II started the Luftwaffe had 552 Ju 52/3ms in four groups. The Ju 52 served over all fronts in large and growing amounts. They became famous during the airborne operations in Norway, against Dutch forts in May 1940, and also in the most impressive German airborne operation, the invasion of Crete in May 1941 where 271 Ju 52s were lost. They became very useful later in the war on the Russian front as well as in North Africa. The time of German victories ended in late 1942 and for the rest of the war the Ju 52, nicknamed “ Tante Ju”, were very often employed in supplying the surrounded German armies and had high losses.

Although it was comparable with the British Hawker Hurricane and early models of the German Messerschmitt Bf 109, it could not hold its own against the more powerful Bf 109E and Bf 110C. The MS.406 was the mainstay of the Armée de l’Air during the ‘Phoney War’, but it had begun to be phased out in favour of the more potent Dewoitine D.520 at the turn of 1940. However, owing to the limited capacities of the French aircraft industry, five of the twelve units that started the war with Moranes had to carry on until the bitter end with the same type.
