For Bialystock, in Mel Brooks's current hit musical, the assured failure of his show, ''Springtime for Hitler,'' is dependent on securing the services of a director named Roger De Bris. ''Is he good?'' inquires Bialystock's ingenuous partner, Leo Bloom, as they head for a rendezvous with De Bris. ''I mean, is he bad?'' ''He stinks,'' Bialystock replies. Shortly thereafter, Bialystock imploringly informs De Bris: ''Roger, I speak for Mr. Bloom and myself when I say that you are the only man in the world who can do justice to 'Springtime for Hitler.' '' For Mr. Brooks, assuring the successful transformation of his 1968 film ''The Producers'' into a Broadway musical required at least one similarly baldfaced overture. ''Two and a half years ago, my husband, Mike Ockrent, and I got a call saying Mel Brooks wanted to meet us,'' Susan Stroman said recently.

On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary.

  • Starlight Opens with Local ‘
Starlight opens with local ‘Godspell’ production “Godspell” opens Starlight’s 2021 season after a year’s hiatus caused by COVID; and, in producing the show, Starlight returns to its past in producing local shows. For this show, the story-line follows the “Gospel of Matthew” as told by playwright John Michael Teblak. The show, that wowed audiences with its Biblical re-telling of the first book of The Bible contains uplifting music as it re-tells some of the parables of the original text. “Godspell is an uplifting and celebratory retelling of the Gospel of Matthew from playwright that has taken the world by storm. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, this fun, sensational musical is the perfect production for today. It spreads inspiring messages of hope and love, all to the tune of chart-topping songs by Grammy and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man,” “By My Side,” and more,” Starlight said. The show centers on a small group of people helping Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. “This modern, fresh adaptation is produced by Starlight and brought to life with an entirely local creative team. Starlight is excited to reunite director and choreographer Jerry Jay Cranford with music director Anthony T. Edwards. They last worked on the Starlight’s 2018 production of “Hairspray. “Godspell” is an uplifting and celebratory retelling of the Gospel of Matthew from playwright John- Michael Tebelak that has taken the world by storm.

  • Communicating in Song: the American Sung-Through Musical from in Trousers (1979) to Caroline, Or Change (2004)
Communicating in Song: The American Sung-Through Musical from In Trousers (1979) to Caroline, or Change (2004) A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Alexandre Bádue BM, Federal University of Paraná, 2007 MM, University of Cincinnati, 2012 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT In the American musical theater, the book musical has always presented a conspicuous alternation of songs and spoken dialogue. The former interrupt the latter and provides additional means to depict the characters and the dramatic situations. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, however, a second subgenre of the musical came to prominence: the sung-through musical, in which the entire script—monologues, conversations, turning points—all occur in song, eschewing spoken dialogue and contrasting with the aesthetics of the book musical. This dissertation demonstrates that by avoiding spoken dialogue and increasing the amount of music, American sung-through musicals from 1979 until 2004 challenged the means of structuring musicals. This study investigates how creative teams of sung-through musicals have used songs alone to create, organize, and communicate dramaturgy, questioning the limits between singing and speaking in musical theater. This study comprises twelve sung-through musicals that were written and composed in the United States and originally produced in New York City’s Broadway or Off-Broadway circuits. It does not consider the British sung-through musicals that were successful on Broadway during the same time period.
