Dream Cast Announced for Disney's Aladdin
DREAM CAST ANNOUNCED FOR DISNEY’S ALADDIN An exceptional group of Australia and New Zealand’s most outstanding musical theatre performers and exciting fresh faces has been announced for Disney’s new musical comedy, Aladdin. They will be joined by Broadway performer Michael James Scott in the role of the Genie. Based on the classic Academy Award®-winning animated film,Aladdin will open in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre in August 2016. Tickets go on sale to the GP 8th March 2016. The dream cast for Aladdin has been achieved after intense and competitive auditions throughout Australia. It will be one of the most diverse multi-cultural casts to appear on the Australian stage. American performer Michael James Scott will play the pivotal role of the Genie. Michael has performed in many Broadway shows including the original company of The Book of Mormon, the 2010 Broadway and London revival of Hair, as well as the standby Genie in the original Broadway cast of Aladdin. He was most recently seen in Casey Nicholaw’s third current Broadway hit, Something Rotten. Joining him will be the exciting new discovery Ainsley Melham making his mainstage debut in the title role of Aladdin. Ainsley is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). The principal cast features international musical theatre star Adam Jon Fiorentino (Saturday Night Fever, Mary Poppins) as Kassim, stage & television performer Adam Murphy as Jafar and Robert Tripolino in the role of Omar. Filling out the principal ranks is one of Australia’s most accomplished character actors and musical theatre stars Troy Sussman as Babkak and stage and television actor Aljin Abella as Iago. -

A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre. -

For Bialystock, in Mel Brooks's current hit musical, the assured failure of his show, ''Springtime for Hitler,'' is dependent on securing the services of a director named Roger De Bris. ''Is he good?'' inquires Bialystock's ingenuous partner, Leo Bloom, as they head for a rendezvous with De Bris. ''I mean, is he bad?'' ''He stinks,'' Bialystock replies. Shortly thereafter, Bialystock imploringly informs De Bris: ''Roger, I speak for Mr. Bloom and myself when I say that you are the only man in the world who can do justice to 'Springtime for Hitler.' '' For Mr. Brooks, assuring the successful transformation of his 1968 film ''The Producers'' into a Broadway musical required at least one similarly baldfaced overture. On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. A Musical Thriller Music and Lyrics Book by The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great STEPHEN SONDHEIM HUGH WHEELER grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary. -

The palace guards chase Aladdin, who avoids arrest through cunning and luck (One Jump Ahead). On his way to win the heart of Princess Jasmine, Prince Abdullah confronts Aladdin and calls him an embarrassment to his family name. Hurt and alone, Aladdin vows to make something of his life (Proud of Your Boy). At the palace, Jafar – the Sultan’s royal vizier – and his murder-happy henchman Iago anxiously await news of Abdullah’s meeting with Jasmine. -
