Hugh Panaro Is One of Those Rare Artists Whose Unique Versatility Has
Hugh Panaro is one of those rare artists whose unique versatility has allowed him a distinguished career, not only in the theater, but also in recording studios and concert halls throughout the world. He is currently starring as the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. He also has the distinction of having played both Raoul and the Phantom, a role he performed over 1000 times. Also on Broadway, Mr. Panaro has been seen as Gaylord Ravenal in the Harold Prince revival of Show Boat, Marius in Les Miserables and created the roles of Buddy Foster in Side Show, Julian Craster in Jule Styne’s final musical The Red Shoes and the title role of the seductive vampire in Elton John’s musical Lestat. Mr. Panaro made his West End debut as Gaylord Ravenal in Show Boat and went on to perform the title role in Martin Guerre. Some of Mr. Panaro’s Off-Broadway credits include White Lies at the Triad Theater, Noa Noa at Playwright’s Horizons, Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights at the John Housman Theatre, Children of Eden at the Actor’s Playhouse and the role of Robert in Little Fish at Second Stage Theatre. In Los Angeles, Mr. Panaro has participated in “Reprise!” concert performances of Merry We Roll Along, Gentlemen Prefer Blonds and Call Me Madam, for which he received an “Ovation” nomination. Starlight Opens with Local ‘
Starlight opens with local ‘Godspell’ production “Godspell” opens Starlight’s 2021 season after a year’s hiatus caused by COVID; and, in producing the show, Starlight returns to its past in producing local shows. For this show, the story-line follows the “Gospel of Matthew” as told by playwright John Michael Teblak. The show, that wowed audiences with its Biblical re-telling of the first book of The Bible contains uplifting music as it re-tells some of the parables of the original text. “Godspell is an uplifting and celebratory retelling of the Gospel of Matthew from playwright that has taken the world by storm. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, this fun, sensational musical is the perfect production for today. It spreads inspiring messages of hope and love, all to the tune of chart-topping songs by Grammy and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man,” “By My Side,” and more,” Starlight said. The show centers on a small group of people helping Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. “This modern, fresh adaptation is produced by Starlight and brought to life with an entirely local creative team. Starlight is excited to reunite director and choreographer Jerry Jay Cranford with music director Anthony T. Edwards. Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London. Open for business since 1908. “A Customer!” My name is Rachel Edwards and I am the originating producer of Tooting Arts Club’s Sweeney Todd. On behalf of myself, and my producing partners Jenny Gersten, Greg Nobile, Jana Shea and Nate Koch, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Harrington’s Pie and Mash Shop! In the spring of 1908, number 3 Selkirk Road Tooting, London, became the home of Harrington’s Pie and Mash shop when it was bought by Bertie Harrington and his wife Clara. Little has changed in this tiny Tooting eatery since it first opened for business some 109 years ago. The Harrington fam- ily still run the shop, the original green tiles still adorn the walls and the menu remains unchanged since the days of Queen Victoria. The idea to stage Sweeney Todd in London’s oldest pie and mash shop was one which I lived with for several years before I dared to say it out loud. It felt too outrageous, too complicated, in essence – it felt impossible. A simple ‘yes’ from Beverley Mason – owner of Harrington’s, and great grand-daughter of Bertie and Clara – changed everything. Subsequently, an unforgettable collabora- tion was born that set in motion a chain of events that was nothing short of extraordinary. Nothing was ever a problem ‘Can we replace your fridge with a piano?’ Of course you can. ‘Stand on your counter?’ Go ahead. ‘Sorry about the blood!’ Don’t worry about it. This generosity, coupled with the sheer skill and enthusiasm of the creative team, our pie-shop Sweeney began to take shape. -

The ability to sing musical theatre style has become high in demand from both Broadway and Opera companies. About more than half of Young Artist Programs, pay to sings, and apprenticeships put on at least one musical theater show a season. Those on the audition panel now ask in the audition requirements for at least one musical theatre piece to perform for them. Having the knowledge of how to properly belt will help the performer have more opportunities than other singers who only know how to sing bel canto style. This treatise will include a new methodology that will address a belting technique through the lens of a classically trained singer and how to transfer elements from bel canto technique into a belting technique. -

CREATIVE BIOS JERRY JAY CRANFORD (Director/Choreographer) happily returns to Starlight for this 50th Anniversary celebration of Godspell where he also directed and choreographed Starlight’s Hairspray in 2018 as well as Aladdin and Peter Cottontail III for Starlight at the Kauffman. As a professional actor, singer and dancer, Mr. Cranford has performed on Broadway (Les Misérables), international and national tours (Les Misérables, Evita European Company, Singing in the Rain as Don, Anything Goes as Billy). He spent 3 years as the Genie in Disneyland’s stage musical Aladdin, performed as a principal with the acclaimed Kansas City Lyric Opera in their production of Turandot and performed for the MUNY Theatre of St. Louis in Shrek the Musical and Les Misérables serving as the dance captain. He has worked with Broadway stars John Tartaglia, Julia Murney, Norm Lewis, Denis Jones, Hugh Panaro, Sutton Foster, Colm Wilkinson, Lea Salonga, Andrea McArdle, Michael James Scott, Laurie Beechman, Brad Oscar and Roger Bart. As a director/choreographer, he helmed the world premiere of Madagascar: A Musical Adventure and A Year with Frog and Toad for the Coterie Theatre, the regional premiere of Everyday Rapture working with original star Sherie Renee Scott and librettist Dick Scanlan, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Les Misérables for the Merry Go Round Theater in New York and received two Ovation Nominations for his production of The Marvelous Wonderettes in Vancouver, BC. In 2019, Jerry Jay was selected Best Director of a Professional Musical by Broadway World Kansas City for his production of Newsies. He also won the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Council for Best Director of a Musical for his production of Newsies at the beautiful Rose Theatre.
