A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.

  • Starlight Opens with Local ‘
Starlight opens with local ‘Godspell’ production “Godspell” opens Starlight’s 2021 season after a year’s hiatus caused by COVID; and, in producing the show, Starlight returns to its past in producing local shows. For this show, the story-line follows the “Gospel of Matthew” as told by playwright John Michael Teblak. The show, that wowed audiences with its Biblical re-telling of the first book of The Bible contains uplifting music as it re-tells some of the parables of the original text. “Godspell is an uplifting and celebratory retelling of the Gospel of Matthew from playwright that has taken the world by storm. Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, this fun, sensational musical is the perfect production for today. It spreads inspiring messages of hope and love, all to the tune of chart-topping songs by Grammy and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, such as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man,” “By My Side,” and more,” Starlight said. The show centers on a small group of people helping Jesus Christ tell different parables by using a wide variety of games, storytelling techniques and hefty doses of comic timing. “This modern, fresh adaptation is produced by Starlight and brought to life with an entirely local creative team. Starlight is excited to reunite director and choreographer Jerry Jay Cranford with music director Anthony T. Edwards. They last worked on the Starlight’s 2018 production of “Hairspray. “Godspell” is an uplifting and celebratory retelling of the Gospel of Matthew from playwright John- Michael Tebelak that has taken the world by storm.

  • Communicating in Song: the American Sung-Through Musical from in Trousers (1979) to Caroline, Or Change (2004)
Communicating in Song: The American Sung-Through Musical from In Trousers (1979) to Caroline, or Change (2004) A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by Alexandre Bádue BM, Federal University of Paraná, 2007 MM, University of Cincinnati, 2012 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT In the American musical theater, the book musical has always presented a conspicuous alternation of songs and spoken dialogue. The former interrupt the latter and provides additional means to depict the characters and the dramatic situations. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, however, a second subgenre of the musical came to prominence: the sung-through musical, in which the entire script—monologues, conversations, turning points—all occur in song, eschewing spoken dialogue and contrasting with the aesthetics of the book musical. This dissertation demonstrates that by avoiding spoken dialogue and increasing the amount of music, American sung-through musicals from 1979 until 2004 challenged the means of structuring musicals. This study investigates how creative teams of sung-through musicals have used songs alone to create, organize, and communicate dramaturgy, questioning the limits between singing and speaking in musical theater. This study comprises twelve sung-through musicals that were written and composed in the United States and originally produced in New York City’s Broadway or Off-Broadway circuits. It does not consider the British sung-through musicals that were successful on Broadway during the same time period.

  • Q&A GUESTS Including Tony Award-Winner Nikki M. James
2020 VIRTUAL BROADWAY CAMPS | FACULTY AND Q&A ARTISTS Q&A GUESTS Including Tony Award-winner Nikki M. James We will welcome a special Broadway guest for a special Q&A each day, Tuesday-Friday. Nikki M James is perhaps best known for originating the role of Nabalungi in the Book of Mormon, for which she won a Tony Award. She recently starred in Tony Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day at the Public Theater. Nikki was born and raised in New Jersey, where she fell in love with the theater at a young age. With the encouragement of her parents, she began her professional career at age 13, appearing in commercials and voice-overs. She attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, earning a BFA in drama. She made her Broadway debut in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, followed by a leading role in House of Flowers for City Center’s Encores! Series, all while pursuing her degree. After graduating, Nikki became a fixture in New York theater: she originated the role of Lorraine in the Broadway production of All Shook Up, performed alongside Phylicia Rashad in Michael John La Chiusa’s Bernarda Alba at Lincoln Center Theatre, and starred as Dorothy in The Wiz at the La Jolla Playhouse (2006 Craig Noel Award). In 2008, Nikki took on classical theater at the world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where she played Juliet in Romeo and Juliet and starred opposite Christopher Plummer in Shaw’s Caesar and Cleopatra. Her other theater credits include the 2014 Broadway Revival of Les Miserables (Eponine), Shakespeare in the Park productions of Julius Caesar (Portia) and Twelfth Night (Viola), Dave Malloy's Preludes, and The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin.

A word from the producers… Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan Welcome to the historic Gershwin Theatre and the first annual Arts for Autism Benefit Concert! Two weeks ago, as we sat working on this program, it struck us that our dream was finally happening. This magical evening has been a full three years in the making. How surreal that what began as a tiny idea is about to take place in a very grand way. It was only days after the first Believe NYC Benefit Concert that we wondered how we could make an even greater impact on the world. This first benefit, at the Triad on 72nd Street, raised money and awareness for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and the Believe NYC scholarship fund. There were only about 80 people in the audience, but it was transformative. The audience was moved. It meant something. And it did something good. We were hooked! Michael said out loud, “We should do this again. But this time we should do it at Carnegie Hall.” At first, we both laughed. Carnegie Hall…surely that was crazy! But, it wasn’t long before we started to talk that our crazy, impossible idea might actually happen. We started planning. Once we realized no one had ever given this many students the opportunity to perform on a Broadway Stage, we knew we were on to something. We changed course from Carnegie Hall to a Broadway Theatre. We set our sights on a partnership with Autism Speaks. As fate would have it, Michael’s long-time friend and neighbor, Marissa Eisenman, who has a child with autism, had been a top fundraiser in New Jersey for Autism Speaks.
