OCTOBER 2016 Welcome to October Sky! We can’t imagine a more perfect show to give our 2016–2017 Season a great launch (if you’ll pardon the pun). New musicals are, of course, one of The Old Globe’s specialties, and the upcoming season is filled with exactly the kind of work the Globe does best. In this very theatre, you’ll have a chance to see a revival of Steve Martin’s hilarious Picasso at the Lapin Agile; the exciting backstage drama Red Velvet; and the imaginative, fable- like musical The Old Man and The Old Moon. And of course, we’re bringing back The Grinch for its 19th year! Across the plaza in the Sheryl and Harvey White Theatre, we hope you’ll join us for work by some of the most exciting voices in the American theatre today: award-winning actor/ songwriter Benjamin Scheuer (The Lion), Globe newcomer Nick Gandiello (The Blameless), the powerful and trenchant Dominique Morisseau (Skeleton Crew), and the ingenious Fiasco Theater, with their own particular spin on Molière’s classic The Imaginary Invalid. Following a sell-out run in 2017, Albion returns to the Almeida for four weeks only. Joining the previously announced Victoria Hamilton (awarded Best Actress at 2018 Critics’ Circle Awards for this role) and reprising their roles are Nigel Betts, Edyta Budnik, Wil Coban, Margot Leicester, Nicholas Rowe and Helen Schlesinger. They will be joined by Angel Coulby, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Dónal Finn and Geoffrey Freshwater. Mike Bartlett’s plays for the Almeida include his adaptation of Maxim Gorky’s Vassa, Game and the multi-award winning King Charles III (Olivier Award for Best New Play) which premiered at the Almeida before West End and Broadway transfers, a UK and international tour. His television adaptation of the play was broadcast on BBC Two in 2017. A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR What a large undertaking in a short amount of time with Sondheim’s most difficult score! Kudos to the cast, crew, musical, technical and design team. Sondheim’s masterpiece about a wronged barber seeking revenge has long been a favorite of mine. Having seen the recent John Doyle Broadway revival on their final dress rehearsal, I caught Sondheim there looking perturbed. It had been deconstructed with the small cast playing their own instruments as they sang; clear storytelling had been lost. In our version, I wanted to focus completely on the relationships and reasons that drive Sweeney to action. A corrupt judge of powerful stature does the unimaginable, giving permission to a society in downward spiral to lose all sense of morality. -

These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest.
