The Ayrshire Journal 10 Profitable Lifetime Index - £PLI Written by Duncan Hunter, and information sourced from Dairyco Breeding +

£PLI has undergone a significant change this August and should now be better equipped to help cattle breeders improve their herds to meet the UK dairy industry’s long term demands

The new £PLI recently launched, places an increased emphasis on health and fitness at around 68% of the total index and reduces the emphasis on production. Within this shift, there is a greater emphasis on female fertility and a new figure has been added to reflect the costs of maintaining the cow (see pie chart). In the past there has not been any means to account for the amount of costs to feed a smaller cow compared to a larger one. However, after much research at Scotland’s Rural College, an accurate prediction of maintenance costs can now be made using traits which are routinely measured during type classification. This means that a smaller cow will have a higher PLI than a larger cow if they are both genetically capable of giving the same amount of milk at the same level of fitness. • Improve functional type - feet & legs and mammary With more evidence than ever before supporting the value of PLI, UK • Increased emphasis on longevity producers are strongly urged to use the index as their primary selection • Reduce maintenance costs tool. Do not be tempted to be led by other countries rankings that have • Improve udder health been designed for different local conditions with other markets and farming • Improve calving performance systems in mind. Despite the fact that some animals may rank well on both the UK and foreign country indexes, it is known from research that All breeds evaluated with £PLI are within their own breed base so across using a foreign index ultimately gives UK breeders suboptimal results. breed evaluation is not directly possible. The PLI has been designed for use on our own national herd producing milk for sale to domestic buyers so there’s no question that it should be With the recent changes, we see a change in the top rankings for the used by UK cattle breeders. Although the Council meetings and the AGM take precedence at them, there were some really good cow makers among them, including our annual Conference, the visits and tours are the icing on the a nice 85 point Highway Tourist daughter. After a sumptuous hog roast, cake. This year was no different and, if anything, was enhanced we headed for the buses. Next visit was to the Gadles herd of Trevor by the beautiful weather and the unique and gorgeous landscapes Howe and Julie Prisk, a herd I know fairly well as in my role of Breed that make Cornwall famous. Development Manager, I monitor it. When I first went there, it was dominated by foundation cows from Andrew Meikle’s good herd, solid trouble free cows just lacking in index, but with skill and a little bit of advice, Trevor has developed it, and we are now looking there for bull mothers, especially descendants of twin sisters Saphire 5th and 6th.

Devas Herd Visit

Our first visit was to the Devas herd of the Roskilly family, one of the hidden gems of the Ayrshire breed. For those that have never visited, the country lanes are so narrow that even the coach could not get there Jendale Herd Visit and we were taken by minibus or Shank’s pony (walking). On entering the field, the star of the herd, Devas Fenela 23 EX 94, a daughter of Now we have high indexing daughters and granddaughters Pant James Bond, was waiting to greet us, just the kind of cow that by bulls like Lagace Modem, Carmelglen Edberg, B Jurist, the breed needs. Other mature cows that took the eye were Brocklehill Walnut Conn and R Ascona. No matter the sire used, the Bank Book daughters and the homebred Devas First Valentine ones. family’s functional type still shows through. Most of the in Palmyra Jerrys Rhythm had done well and although the first calved milk heifers were by Ardmore Crown Napier, and what a good heifers had been outwintered and the constant rain had been hard on job he had done, and as well as UK sires like Panache, Trevor is considering bulls like Gunnerstorp and is already milking Obliques to keep the ball rolling.

The first visit of the second day was to the Jendale herd of Paul and Penny Jenkin which is always popular not just for the cows, but for the beautiful peaceful situation of the farm. It was four years since my last visit, and this time it was the many daughters of the homebred sire, Cornish Performer (an Auchensale Star Performer son, out of Peach 118 by Bankend Waterloo, the stand out cow on our last visit four years ago) that were the real cow makers. Others that took the eye were an outstanding third lactation Auchensale Star Gadles Herd Visit Performer, a really nice Rhythmajig and Tryst daughters again from the Peach family. Cornish Performer himself was in the The Ayrshire Journal 12 pen and what an impressive bull he is. Time for a welcome cuppa and After another food overload, this time with Cornish pasties, a Cornish a scone or two or three! The next visit was a first for many of us. This favourite, and some of the local ale, we were in good form to view the being to the Blackrock herd of Packer and Rowe, one the older herds herd. This herd has been built on Hunnington bloodlines, and this typical Cornish steep banky farm needs their kind of cows with locomotion and hardiness. Many of the older cows were by Hunnington Triple Winner, Hunnington Fragyson and Hunnington Admiral.

Refreshments all round at the Blackrock herd visit

We need not have worried as their place had been taken by daughters of the homebred Viagra, Slightly Magic and Rhythamajig plus three Members enjoying viewing the Blackrock herd outstanding Jurist daughters from Magenta and Velour, augmented by an outstanding group of heifers including some really special ones by Reality. Other heifers that stood out were VG Ristourn and Orraryd My favourite cow in the field was a ninth lactation heifers. A fitting end to a fantastic conference. outstanding in milk heifers by Green Lane Prodigy, while many of the in calf heifers were by Crown Napier. Of interest were four daughters of the sixties sire, Bankend Legacy, now confirmed as being a carrier of the much coveted A2 gene, and good heifers they were. All of us had been looking forward to visiting the famous Rosehill herd of our past president, Colin Christophers, and family, and heavy rain earlier in the week had dampened that spirit, but as we approached the farm, it was evident that mother nature had been good to us, and we could see the herd grazing in the hot sunshine as we walked along the farm lane, the coach again being redundant. Ayrshires on view at Rosehill

The Ayrshire Journal 14 15 The Ayrshire Journal The Ayrshire Journal 16 by Alan Timbrell Breed Heritage Report Breed Heritage Chairman Hi everyone. I’m not sure where this year has gone! It seems to be the Ayrshire breed the high profile that it deserves, and to be the envy passing us by so quickly. It only seems like days ago, but actually it is a of all the rest. Speaking to the overseas visitors, it would seem that they see the UK as Alan Timbrell - Breed Heritage Chairman a much needed source of genetics. Sometimes we don’t realise what Tel: 07889 044070 / Email: [email protected] real outstanding animals we have in the UK. Instead of travelling around looking at daughters of bulls we may wish to use in our own country, we tend to look in glossy magazines which perhaps contain one or two good photos of cows which catch our eye, but in reality they are maybe not as good as what we have on our own shores. As a breed, we need our breeders to use more UK bred bulls to help us prove the next generation of sires and help the breed to gain a more reliable and accurate proof. They say charity begins at home, but we don’t want to be treated as a charity, we want to be the most forward moving breed in the UK.

Already we are the envy of many of the other breeds with what was achieved at the Livestock Show, with the proposed new show dress code, the outstanding young breeders and the quality of the stock on show!

I have been very fortunate this year to have seen our young breeders on two occasions. Firstly the young breeders gathering in the Midlands and then of course at the Livestock Show. I can’t tell you enough of how proud I have been to be associated with such outstanding youth.

Some say Breed Development is all about breeding bulls, but it’s also about breeding the youth for the future otherwise we won’t have the next generation of breeders to take the breed forward for years to come. So there we are, those that are able and willing, get to it!!

At this point, I would like to thank all of the breeders who sent so many outstanding cattle to the Livestock Show and with the help and input from our young breeders, you helped to give

Gathering 2014 by Duncan Hunter

The 2014 Ayrshire Young Breeders Gathering was held this year in Loughborough in the Midlands, with 57 competitors from all over the UK including Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the South West.

Delegates arrived on the evening of Thursday 10th April at the Link Hotel in time for an evening meal followed by some very entertaining “icebreaking games”, which were very well organised by two of our most talented young breeders, James Lawrie and Stuart Williams.

On Friday morning everyone boarded the bus for the hour long journey to the Hunnington herd, owned by Chris, Hazel and Lisa Window near Bromsgrove, Birmingham, for the first competition of the gathering which was the stock judging. Lisa had arranged two classes of six Ayrshires which were immaculately turned out - one class of heifers, and one class of cows. All competitors placed both classes, and gave their reasons on one of them to our judge for the day, Michael Broadley, from Whitecroft Ayrshires, who is one of the Society’s elite judges. Once the judging was over, we were very fortunate to be able to view this world renowned herd in the glorious sunshine, which was an absolute pleasure, before heading to the local village for a lovely lunch. Our huge thanks to the Window family! It was then time to get back on the bus to travel to Atherstone in Warwickshire to visit the Dudley Wood herd, by kind permission of Andrew and Libby Hall. Here we held a sire selection competition where the young members were expected to view two chosen cows along with all of their pedigree and milk records, and from a list of six sires, and the information they had, they chose the ideal mating for each cow and gave their reasons for doing so. Again, we were then given the opportunity to walk around the herd which was an absolute pleasure. Bone quality and locomotion was very impressive here, especially in all of the aged cows of which there were many!

With a few sun burnt faces, delegates arrived back to the hotel in time for a quick change into their cowboy and cowgirl costumes and met in L to R: Robert McConnell and Matthew McLean the bar before the evening entertainment was revealed. On entering the conference room, the members were met by a rodeo bull (not a real A slow start - for some - the following morning, but they all managed to one) and a tin can alley with prizes for all. Much amusement followed travel, on time, the short distance to Blaise and Deborah Tomlinson’s with members trying to stay on the bull as long as possible - until our Sandyford herd. Here we held the cattle preparation and showmanship president Colin Christophers had a go and duly ripped off one of the competitions. The set up here was fantastic, with clipping and washing bull’s horns! After dinner members danced away to a Ceilidh which was facilities which would be the envy of any dairy show! Clipaholics’ very great fun for all. Eventually in the early hours once the entertainment had own Wendy Young was judge for the clipping competition and made a finished, a large group decided to taxi into Loughborough to recruit some very thorough job of it. At the same time James and Stuart very kindly new members! gave guidance and tuition to the “beginners” and the very young which The Ayrshire Journal 20 was very much appreciated by all. Once washing of all of the calves was done, we were treated to a fabulous hog roast with all of the trimmings followed by a young breeders meeting where other events for the rest of the year were discussed, along with the proposal for new breed uniforms for the future. Clippers were then given a short time to do the final clipping and preparation before the showmanship competition.

This year’s judge for showmanship was Jessica Miller who again made a very professional job of it by judging and giving reasons on all four classes.

The walk around the Sandyford herd was a highlight for many. Big, powerful dairy cows everywhere, and many of our youngsters were thrilled to see Sandyford Clover 10 in the flesh, who is the highest classified Ayrshire cow of the breed and who has the most decorated show success story possible! Coronation Trophy Winner - Aled Walters (left) receiving his trophy from Michael Broadley The final evening saw the presentations from all of the events, with the prestigious Hugh Stevenson Trophy for the most points overall being won by John McLean from Northern Ireland who was a very well deserved and popular winner, with Evie Tomlinson from Loughborough winning the John Cochrane Trophy for the highest points in the junior section.

There are so many people to thank for this event. Firstly the young breeders themselves for supporting the event and being such a great bunch! Especially James and Stuart for the amount of work they put into help when needed and for tutoring the beginners. All of our hosts for their most amazing support, with a special thanks to Blaise for all of the extra support, and to Deborah for all the work she put into help me organise this very special event, and our financial supporters without whom we could not hold these competitions: Jessica Miller Photography, Clipaholics, P & S Williams, G & A Timbrell, Phoenix Feeds, R T Dairy, Embryonics, Cattle Services Ayr, Smartmove Ayrshires and Farm Wardrobe.

Our recent sire brochure with its new layout and comprehensive coverage of the quality and wide ranging genetics we offer appears to have been very well received. This in turn we hope will lead to further increases in our semen sales. Going on past experiences the majority of these come in the last quarter of the year, so hopefully customers will have it to hand when they are ready to order.

The lastest bull proofs produced by Dairyco Breeding + were made public on August 12th. Within these, the PLI has been significantly revised to include a greater emphasis on functional traits - fertility, longevity, calving Hunnington Mandella ease etc, with a lesser emphasis on production. This has changed the rankings of many bulls - some hugely, elevating the likes of - “Napier”, “Marshall”, “First Quality” and others to or near the top of the PLI Thanks also to the breeders who opened their gates for the herd visits leader board. The Ayrshire Journal 22 23 The Ayrshire Journal Ayrshire Diary...... From Annabell Armstrong, Plaskettlands

What a start to spring we had at Plaskettlands, after weeks of draining, digging holes and finding elusive drains, you know the ones; they’re the ones that you know are in the field somewhere! The entire crop went in well and grew well early on, and we have had bumper crops of first cut silage and hay this year. We have all our own equipment and so don’t need to rely on contractors which makes the job a bit easier. All we need to do now, is figure out a way to keep the crows off the wrapped bales between wrapping and bringing them in. That’s a work in progress, but Michael has all sorts of weird and wonderful ideas. The potatoes have been growing a treat, but we were late at getting them planted this year due to waterlogged fields. They were a fortnight late at going in, but were ready a fortnight earlier than last year. Van loaded, and off to market we go, with four markets a week at the moment. We have also had some ‘potato pickers’ in the field through night which we Annabell get every year with someone helping themselves.

What gets annoying is when they pull the tops and just take the tatties of rest of the hens, as they are from Wales and flying from Liverpool. Our certain sizes and leave the rest lying. If we are not in the field for a couple daughter Laura was also going with me. The down side was the return of days then they are wasted. A little note on Facebook seemed to stop it flight. I knew this had to be an early return, as we were travelling half way for a while, but they have been back this week and taken a couple more down to Cornwall on the Sunday, as Rodney had to be in Falmouth for sacks full. Again, Michael has all sorts of ideas to combat this, most of the council meetings by early afternoon on the Monday. Return time 9 them involving a trip wire, and a shot gun! some other “guest appearances” before walking around the great Bigginvale herd. Uniformity at its best, with fantastic udders and great locomotion was the opinion of all! Another tea and cakes followed before the suggestion that we go to visit Robert’s Belted Galloways. So off we went, the scenic way (no sarcasm meant there Robert). It was a delightful journey seeing the Derbyshire countryside on a stunning evening followed by a nice walk. Eventually we made it to our base for the evening in time for last orders!

Next morning it was off to Buxton to visit the Whitecroft herd and the Broadley family. After an introduction from Andrew and Michael we were fortunate to see another fantastic herd. Longevity, fertility and great udders, under first class management was the opinion of all of the visitors. It was also a treat to see Whitecoft Furtado, one of the newest sires on the Cattle Services books, along with his dam and grand dam. After coffee it was all aboard to our final destination which was Tideswell and the Heydale herd. Elaine Berresford again supplied us with a fantastic lunch before we had the pleasure of walking around the herd with a background of stunning scenery. Again the cows looked so well and the comments coming back were that they had much scope and length, with super udders.

That was the end of the herd visits, and a number of airport drop offs followed. On behalf of all of the delegates I must thank all of our hosts for their time and hospitality during the visits and I know for sure that all of the visitors went away with so much admiration for our breed and our breeders.

Heydale D W Berresford & Son Heydale Helen 13 Pant Autograph LP 100 16 Normanton Sarah 13 Embryo Star Stone LP 100 10 It has come to our attention that two cows from Heydale have never officially been recognised and awarded for reaching the LP100 status. Although both are now deceased it is important they should be recognised. The first Normanton Sarah 13 EX 92 5E LP100 sired by the Canadian sire Embryo-Star Stone completed ten lactations in her lifetime. The other was Heydale Helen 13 VG LP100 by Pant Autograph who lived to the grand old age of 19 years in which she completed sixteen lactations. The Ayrshire Journal 50 51 The Ayrshire Journal The Ayrshire Journal 52 53 The Ayrshire Journal The Ayrshire Journal 54 Club News Countrywide Ayr We are very sad that one of our founder members, Mr Denis Williams, On Sunday 3rd August, the club held their annual calf show at Catrine aged 86, passed away suddenly in June. Denis was a past Chairman House, Mauchline by kind permission of the Templeton family. The day and President of the Club before selling his Ayrshires in 1998. His wife started with a showmanship demonstration by Colin Laird and Stuart Daphne, passed away last September. Our deepest sympathy goes to Caldwell, then it was into the calf classes ably judged by Alex Kirkpatrick, his family. The Barr. After the calf classes finished it was on to the showmanship, and Colin Laird took to the job of judging this. Cumberland Champion Calf - The club has had a busy few months with fund raising for next year’s Glenmuir Oblique Patricia (Jelyca Oblique) - Andrew & Emma Struthers conference. A very enjoyable Irish Night was held at Middle Farm, hosted Reserve Calf - by Ann and Willie. 30 club members and friends dressed in something Brocklehill Stadium Louise (Changue Stadium) - Lisa Rennie green enjoyed Irish stew, beef in guinness and a selection of puddings Champion Handler - Neil Sloan and an Irish Quiz. The Where’s Willie Treasure Hunt that we had at The Dairy Expo in March was a great success, with all the squares being sold. The winners were the Fletchers at Round Bush and were announced at Mike Cartners sponsored ‘locks chop’. and any of you who know Mike will remember he had a fine head of hair and the beard to match. On a sunny Saturday night in June, 80 friends and club members congregated at Low Ploughlands to see the momentous occasion of Mike losing his hair. A wonderful BBQ supper was provided by Mike and Shirley then the chopping began. After 10 minutes, Mike didn’t have a hair left on the top of his head, but the chin was another matter. After another half an hour of snipping, clipping and shaving the beard was history, and a very large pile of hair clippings were all that was left. Thank you very much to Mike for making the sacrifice. A wonderful total in excess of £1400 was raised. This is to be split between The Addington Fund and the club Conference fund. I have it on good authority Mike has had another haircut since!
