New Pen Del..... Southeastern.... Oldest Newf Competing at the Triple Crown: Colonial…. 12-year-old Ch. Pouch Cove’s Material Girl “Riley” in the Veterans class Newfoundland Clubs.... Look what happens when 3 Regional Clubs and a handful of creative and dedicated people have an idea and it comes to fruition!

Countless hours of planning proved that hard work does pay off!!! Six independent Regional Specialties with 3 Sweepstakes... All 3 clubs complemented each other with strengths in different areas and it all came together to provide the Newf fancy with a great long weekend and an opportunity for 12 majors. We had a class dog finish his CH. in 24 hours with 3 5 point majors... I think that may be a record!!!!

The show set up began Wednesday April 21, under the direction of the very hardworking Don Sharkey....Don’s team was fabulous...the grounds looked great and ready to go when many of the exhibitors started arriving Thursday morning...We had at least 20 RVs parked around the ring along with many vans and set ups! There was plenty of room to socially distance for all..

Friday was New Pen Del’s day to host and it rolled around very quickly with the judging beginning at 8:30 with Puppy Sweepstakes, then onto Veterans Sweepstakes handily judged by Dona Baker Austin...then the first point show began with Vicki Seiler Cushman stepping in the ring to pass judgment on the Newfs... she was fabulous with the puppies and veterans alike..class dogs and bitches were put through their paces... Then came the Specials to compete for Best of Breed and the first of 6 possible spots in the finale “Triple Crown” competition with the secret judge... Each Best of Breed winner from each of the 6 shows competed on Sunday after the last Specialty!!!

Bob Busby judged the second show on Friday afternoon!!! By the end of the first day, we had 1 dog to compete in the finale...yup the same dog went Best of Breed at both shows...The Results are listed in the following pages of this issue…

The Southeastern Newf Club hosted on Saturday and Colonial Newf Club on Sunday...Four more specialties with 2 more Sweepstakes one of which was judged by our very own Wendy Keyser...

In the end, late Sunday afternoon we had 3 dogs competing in the Triple Crown under our Secret Judge Lynne Hamilton who selected the Veteran Xander, GCHP2 OCEANO DARBYDALE'S XECUTIVE DECISION as the winner of the Triple Crown!!!

What a fun great weekend!!! Thank you to all who pitched in to make this event amazing!!! Bear Facts 9 Spring NEW-PEN-DEL 21

COME TO ME WORKSHOP By Amy Peraza-Kroeger

The cold, gray, damp morning was not enough to deter a group of friends and NPD members from meeting up to participate in a Come to Me Workshop with their Newfoundlands in Wall Township, NJ. The workshop was taught by Teryl, a wonderful, experienced trainer focused on positive reinforcement. The Newfs, of course, thought the weather was just lovely and are always excited to learn!

We gathered at the instructor’s home that was the perfect setting for the class. The fencing even extended up the driveway so the crated newfs could stay in the cars with all the doors open in between exercises.

The instructor started off with some tips to keep in mind as we worked.

• Choose a recall word exclusively for emergency situations. It should not be the same word used in Obedience Classes for their formal recall. Since most use COME or FRONT in classes, we used the word HERE in the workshop. Say the word in a high pitched and exciting tone of voice.

From left to right: Ana Peraza-Kroeger with Abby, • Don’t call your dog to come if you know they’re not going Amy Peraza-Kroeger with Winifred, John Affel with to come. It just reinforces them ignoring you. Jake, Kat Lynn with Henry, Dan Costello with Bella • Work with very high value treats! And reinforce the high value treats with lots of love and praise. Express to them, that they are the best pups in the world for coming when called!

FIRST EXERCISE: THE NAME GAME – PART ONE The goal was to get your dog’s attention by calling their name. We rewarded the attention, not the recall. We had half the dogs out at a time, so they were a little bit distracted by each other. We stood with our dog on a 6’ leash with the handler not moving. As the dogs wandered to the end of the leash, we would call their name. At the first turn of their head to look at the handler, the handler would move in toward the dog and reward the attention. This is much harder than it sounds. We dispensed the treats from our mouths so that the dogs would look at our faces to be ready to receive the next instructions. But it took a bit of coordination and you had to be quick. I think many Jake responding to his name being called. of us will be practicing that exercise at home.

Bear Facts 34

Spring NEW-PEN-DEL 21

SECOND EXERCISE: THE NAME GAME – PART TWO This was a fun exercise for both dogs and handlers. Lots of treats in fast succession. In this exercise, the pattern was to throw a treat within a leash length, when the dog got to the treat, call their name, when they give you their attention with a turn of the head, throw another treat the opposite direction. When they reach that treat, call their name again, then give them a treat when they return to you. This was an exercise that we had learned in an Attention class a few years ago and we still do this with our newfs all the time on walks. The dogs love it!

Bella really wants to get back to Dan! Ana and Teryl hold her back.

Look how happy she is when she gets to him! THIRD EXERCISE: RECALL WITH EXCITEMENT

In this exercise there was only one dog out of their crates at a time. This was a recall exercise using the new Emergency Recall Word, HERE. The dogs were held by the instructor, (along with Ana because our dogs are very strong) as the handlers would move about 50’ away. The instructor encouraged us to be very enthusiastic as we were walking away from the dog, talking to them and getting them excited to want to run toward us. Then the handlers called the dog with the HERE command, and Ana and the instructor would drop the leashes. This is not a formal recall, in this emergency recall we want the dog to be super excited to come to us. We used a high pitched, happy voice to give the HERE command, and then excitedly coaxed them to us as they ran toward us. The reward was a jackpot of several high value treats and lots of love, praise and excited voices! There was some confusion here as the dogs learned the new HERE command. Several were very familiar with COME, and the new command took a little getting used to. But Newfs are particularly smart when there are treats and love involved, and they learned their new emergency recall word quickly. That is if the handlers remembered to say the new word!

FOURTH EXERCISE: RECALL WITH DISTRACTIONS

This exercise used a long line to help the dog perform Henry has a whole lot of enthusiasm for his distraction, but the recall if the distractions proved too, well, distracting. he came back to his Mom even faster! We worked with one dog at a time. The long line Bear Facts 35

Spring NEW-PEN-DEL 21

dragged behind the dog. The dog started the exercise with their handlers and the instructor would encourage the dog to come to her. When the dog got pretty close to the instructor, who also had some tasty treats with her, the handler would call the dog back to them. It was surprising to see how eager many of the dogs were to get back to their handlers. For the few that really wanted to visit with the instructor (they are people-loving Newfs after all) the handler would step on the long line to remind the dog which way they should be moving.

FIFTH EXERCISE: HIDE AND SEEK This exercise was so fun!! The dogs really loved it and it was incredible to see how they would navigate through the property to find where their handlers had hidden themselves. The exercise started with the dogs facing away from the handlers as the handlers hid themselves in several locations through the property. When the teacher said CALL YOUR DOG, the handlers would start yelling HERE (Dogs Name) every few seconds. None of the dogs even Winnie returning to Amy after being hesitated. They all started moving toward their handlers after the first distracted by the instructor. call. Sometimes they would change direction as they realized their handlers weren’t where they originally thought. You could really see the dogs thinking their way through this exercise.

That was all we had time for before the hard rain (and hail apparently just a few miles away) moved in and we called it a morning. Another exercise that we could have done was to have the dogs recall with food or toy distractions and see if they’d run past them. We didn’t have time that day, but we may follow up with a future workshop to play some more recall games and reinforce what we learned!

All of the participants loved the workshop and really felt they had gained valuable information, even those whose dogs already have AKC Companion Dog (CD) titles. The workshop was a great reminder that training should be fun and exciting for you and your dog! Make it a game! We received a very nice note from the instructor afterwards about how nice it was to see a group of friends training together and everyone being so supportive of each other. It made us so grateful to be a part of our Newfoundland community where we all try to be as benevolent as our wonderful breed!

A solid emergency recall is one of the best tools you can have to keep your dogs safe! Try some of these fun exercises with Jake seeking out John behind the bushes in the far left your dogs! corner of the driveway.

The Heroic Dog on the Titanic A Newfoundland dog helped rescue passengers from the Titanic. By: Stanley Coren PhD., DSc, FRSC March 7, 2012

The year 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, which went down around midnight on April 14, 1912. Titanic was considered to be the most luxurious ship ever built and was thought to be unsinkable. At its helm was the experienced first officer, William McMaster Murdoch, of Scotland. Murdoch brought a companion when he came to the Titanic : a large, black Newfoundland dog, named Rigel, whom he had also had with him when he was serving on the Titanic's sister ship, the RMS Olympic . On that fateful night, Rigel was safely housed in the Titanic's modern kennel facilities since Murdoch needed to focus on the goal of this voyage—to reach New York in record time.

Each day, a crewmember would take the dogs for a stroll around the promenade deck. These canine parades became quite an event and people would schedule their times on deck so that they could see the dogs. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the dogs so much that an informal dog show was scheduled by the first class passengers to be held on Monday, April 15th. Unfortunately, that show would never take place.

In the fog and darkness Titanic collided with an iceberg tearing five hull compartments open. This was too much for the "unsinkable" ship and she began to go down. In the years that William Murdoch and Rigel followed, the human tragedy and bravery of that night would be well documented. We know quite a bit about the fate of the 1,522 people that were lost that night, and even more about the 714 people that survived. In the chaos of those events, it is not surprising to find that the accounts of what happened to the dogs are less clear. Some of the reports are confused or incomplete, but the following information appears in a variety of respected accounts of that fateful night.

Although many people died because of the inadequate number of lifeboats it turns out that some of the first boats in the water had empty seats. Thus, Henry and Myra Harper boarded their boat carrying their Pekingese, and Elizabeth Rothschild and Margaret Hays each boarded different boats carrying their small Pomeranians and the presence of the dogs was not challenged. The Bishops' little dog was with them in their cabin; however, when it became clear that, by now, there were not enough lifeboats for all the passengers, Helen Bishop felt obliged to leave her much-loved pet behind. Later, she would tearfully tell how, as she left the cabin for the last time, Frou Frou grabbed the hem of her dress, trying to keep her from going.

Bear Facts 37

Spring NEW-PEN-DEL 21

In the case of Ann Isham, however, her dog was a Great Dane and clearly too large for the lifeboats. She refused to leave her dog behind and insisted that she would do what was needed to save him. Sadly, after the sinking, her body was observed in the water with her arms frozen around her beloved dog. But what of Rigel and the other dogs in the kennels? Murdoch had no opportunity to leave his post to rescue his dog. After the collision, he took charge of the starboard evacuation. Crew members report seeing Murdoch hard at work, attempting to free Collapsible Lifeboat A from the rope tackles used to lower it when a huge wave washed him overboard. He was never seen again.

An unknown passenger went to the kennels and released all of the dogs in an attempt to spare them the horror of drowning in locked cages. Sadly most of the dogs simply disappeared in the cold water, but Rigel's fate was different. Most of the passengers (and dogs) that ended up in the freezing water died from exposure. For that reason, some people have questioned whether a dog such as Rigel could have survived a long swim in the icy ocean. However the Newfoundland dog was bred to function in the harsh conditions of the North Atlantic. It has webbed feet, a rudder-like tail, and a water-resistant coat that make it a natural swimmer. Its body uses the same mechanisms to combat hypothermia that polar bears possess. This allows these dogs to help retrieve fishing nets off the shores of its home island near mainland Canada-actually 400 miles north of where the Titanic sank. There are also many stories of Newfoundlands rescuing people from the sea and enduring icy conditions for long periods of time.

Rigel swam around, at first apparently desperately looking for his master, but after awhile he chose to simply stay close to Lifeboat 4. The dog was too large to bring on board even if there had been space to do so, but the humans, in their exposed lifeboat, apparently suffered more from the effects of the wet and cold than Rigel did from the freezing water.

More than two hours after the Titanic went down, the passenger ship Carpathia finally arrived and began to pick up the surviving passengers. However, it was still dark and a low mist hung on the water. Carpathia 's crew was calling out and waiting for lifeboat passengers to respond in order to locate them. Lifeboat 4 was separated from the other lifeboats by some distance. Finally, the Carpathia began to pull away from the area, unknowingly on a course directly bearing down on the unseen little lifeboat. Its passengers were simply too weak to shout loudly enough to avoid being run down by the ship. Yet, somehow, Rigel was still strong enough to bark. Carpathia's Captain Arthur Henry Rostron heard the dog and ordered the ship to stop. Swimming in front of the lifeboat, the dog marked the location of the survivors and all were hauled up the starboard gangway.

The day after the Carpathia reached New York with the survivors, the New York Herald carried a story about Rigel's significant role in the rescue of Titanic's passengers. The reporter noted that, since the dog's owner was dead, one of Carpathia 's crew named Brigg had adopted him. This was an error, as "Brigg" was the name of a passenger on the lifeboat. Recent evidence suggests that Rigel was adopted by John Brown, Carpathia 's Master at Arms, who, at 62 years of age was the second oldest crewman. Brown retired shortly after and took Rigel with him to his rural home in Scotland. Presumably, this canine hero of the Titanic tragedy finished out his natural life without ever having to face icy water again.

Stanley Coren is the author of many books including: Born to Bark, The Modern Dog, Why Do Dogs Have Wet Noses? The Pawprints of History, How Dogs Think, How To Speak Dog, Why We Love the Dogs We Do, What Do Dogs Know? The Intelligence of Dogs, Why Does My Dog Act That Way? c.1900s-1940s Vintage Dog Shows Good breeding, dear sir, is integral. by Alex Q. Arbuckle https://mashable.com/2015/08/06/vintage-dog-shows/

“Everybody was fashionably dressed and wore an air of good breeding.” -NEW YORK TIMES, C.1905 The first known dog show was held in 1859, when a group of hunters assembled in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, to judge 60 dogs from the pointer and setter classes. The judges had no complex standards by which to judge the assembled hounds, but simply evaluated how well the dogs did their jobs.

Bear Facts 39

Spring NEW-PEN-DEL 21

The shows rapidly gained popularity in the UK, and expanded to include more breeds and classes. As kennel clubs formed, standards were codified for each breed, with lists of ideal characteristics.

A prize-winning purebred dog was considered valuable breeding stock (not to mention a status symbol) and could be sold for huge sums. The rich, the nobility and even royalty flocked to these competitions. J.P Morgan once tried to purchase a Pekingese for £32,000 and was refused. Deerhounds bred by Queen Victoria herself were said to be worth $50,000 apiece.

In the United States, dog shows were popularized by P.H. Bryson, whose doctor had recommended hunting with a dog as good exercise to recover from his Civil War wounds. Bryson later competed against that same doctor in a 1874 show, where he won the world’s first Best in Show THIS YEAR’S award.

The famed Westminster Kennel Club show was first held at the Westminster Hotel in 1877 and is today the second oldest annual sporting event in the U.S., after the IS SCHEDULED FOR Kentucky Derby. JUNE 12TH – JUNE 13TH
