IS SORRY REALLY THE HARDEST WORD? GUILT, FORGIVENESS, AND RECONCILIATION IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Ariana Sarah Phillips-Hutton Darwin College Department of Music University of Cambridge This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2017 ABSTRACT IS SORRY REALLY THE HARDEST WORD? GUILT, FORGIVENESS, AND RECONCILIATION IN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Ariana S. Phillips-Hutton Guilt, forgiveness, and reconciliation are fundamental themes in human musical life, and this thesis investigates how people articulate these experiences through musical performance in contemporary genres. I argue that by participating in performances, individuals enact social narratives that create and reinforce wider ideals of music’s roles in society. I assess the interpenetrations of music and guilt, forgiveness, and reconciliation through a number of case studies spanning different genres preceded by a brief introduction to my methodology. My analysis of Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw illustrates the themes (guilt, confession and memorialisation) and approach I adopt in the three main case studies. My examination of William Fitzsimmons’s indie folk album The Sparrow and the Crow, investigates how ideals of authenticity, self-revelation, and persona structure our understanding of the relationship between performer and audience in confessional indie music. Analyses of two contemporary choral settings of Psalm 51 by Arvo Pärt and James MacMillan examine the confessional relationship between human beings and God. I suggest that by

DECEMBER 15, 2020 Testimony of Adam Hartke Co-owner – Wave & The Cotillion Advocacy Committee Co-Chair - National Independent Venue Association (NIVA) Before the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation Subcommittee on Manufacturing, Trade, & Consumer Protection Hearing on “Examining the Impact of COVID-19 on the Live Event Entertainment Industry” Good morning Chairman Moran, Ranking Member Blumenthal, and distinguished members of this committee. Thank you for inviting me to testify. My wife and I are small business people who co-own two live music venues in Wichita, Kansas, Wave and The Cotillion. I also serve as advocacy committee Co-Chair for the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), a coalition of nearly 3,000 independent music venues and promoters in all 50 states and DC that formed as a response to the pandemic. My career in the live music industry began 20 years ago, as a student at Kansas University (KU) and a member of the promotions staff at the student run radio station KJHK, hanging posters, working merchandise tables at shows, and helping bands carry gear. My early aspirations came from hearing stories of my grandparents working shows at The Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita in the 1960s. My grandfather helped manage the facility, and my grandmother worked the box office. My uncle, who worked on the artist management and label side of the music industry for 45 years, also captured my attention as a child and seeded my future career. In the years following my time at KU, I moved back to Wichita with the goal of creating a thriving live music industry in my hometown.

  • Cultural Assimilation Among Malays and Indians in Malaysia
Cultural Assimilation among Malays and Indians in Malaysia Punitha Sivanantham' Kumaran Suberamaniarf Abstract This research is about the cultural elements assimilated within Malays and Indians in Malaysia. The cultural elements are including language, literature, roles and statuses of king, women, poets and Brahmins, beliefs & ideologies and customs & traditions. The scholar Munsyi Abdullah's texts were chosen to identify and analyse the Malays cultural practices because he is the father of Malay modern literature in Malaysia. He had literate his books with historical truths. Besides that, Texts of Tamil classical literature also were chosen to identify and list out the Indians cultural habits. The Tamil classical texts were compiled some 2500 years ago in India and it witnesses the Tamils signified the cultural practices in their daily life. The majority of the Malays in Malaysia recognized as Malay descendants by their mother tongue which is the Malay language. Indians had been visiting Malaya as traders and merchants for over 2000 years, but they did not settle down here as settlers until 19th century. The formation of Malaysia under British colonization with multi races of people encourages a good integration among Malays and Indians and therefore there was a chance for them to adapt and assimilate each other's cultural element. Keywords: Assimilation, cultural elements, Abdullah Munsyi's texts, Tamil classical texts, Malaysia, plural society, beliefs, literatures, statuses, customs. Introduction Malaysia can also be synonymous as a multiracial country which is not only has multi cultures and customs but also specific ethnics with own unique identities. As Charlest said 'Unity has the power to raise up small countries and disunity has the power to break down big countries', therefore Malaysia is recognized as a small country with strong unity which is famous with multi races and cultures.
