Taiwan is a perfect illustration of the saying that good things come in small packages. In comparison with more popular tourist destinations in the Far East, Taiwan is very modest in size, but despite its diminutive scale, the island has an astonishing amount to offer the curious explorer. The two volumes that make up Taiwan 101 are the perfect guide for exploring the very best of Taiwan: not only the island’s finest hikes, but also its best historic towns and cities, brightest traditional festivals, unique Chinese and aboriginal cultural riches, and its little-known natural wonders such as eternal flames, mud volcanoes and badlands. Taiwan 101: Essential Sights, Together, Taiwan 101 Volumes 1 and 2 present Taiwan’s Hikes and Experiences on Ilha finest attractions to anyone who wishes to get to know this Formosa island of kaleidoscopic charms, and comes with detailed information on getting around by public transport, and by Richard Saunders accurate GPS coordinates of nearly 800 fascinating places.

AERATI is one of forty-five winning designs of this year’s Golden Pin Concept Design Award, and it aims to play a part in saving the world from environmental disaster.

esigned by Yong Xiang Lin and Tzu-Hsuan Huang, both students at Tatung University in Taipei, this autonomous aqua drone concept could be an answer to curing our planet’s dead zones. Eutrophic dead zones occur when a body of water contains too Dmany nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen. These nutrients feed algal blooms that deplete underwater oxygen levels, killing marine life and posing a threat to the whole ecosystem, including us! AERATI can be deployed in groups wherever a dangerous algal bloom is spreading. It moves around the body of water like a robotic vacuum cleaner, simultaneously consuming algae and oxygenating the water, while also collecting data on water quality. The data is transmitted to a central system that monitors the aqua drones’ progress. The aqua drone is propelled by a three-blade helical propeller and thrust

It skims across the surface of the water, drawing algae into its core, filtering it out from the water, shredding it into a pulp, then storing it in a lower compartment. The entire mechanism is powered by a solar panel on top of its core. AERATI has been awarded the Golden Pin Concept Design award 2019 Design Mark, and could win a share of the US$38,000 Best Design prize in December. Beyond helping to cure our planet’s dead zones, it has other applications in aquaculture, and the prize money could help to fund its further development.

There will be two events in Taipei to celebrate Dandiya, organized by the Taiwan Indian's Club and the Indians' Association of Taipei respectively. This same festival is observed as Durga Pooja in West Bengal and neighboring states. One of the most important Hindu festivals celebrated in western India, Durga Pooja marks the victory of the Goddess over the demons. The nine forms of Durga are worshipped individually each day,

ossil beds, sacred pools and trees, a petrifying spring and something called “monkey coffee” are unusual attractions, evenF in a place as full of arresting sights and experiences as Taiwan, yet all of these can be found in the oft- overlooked eastern corner of Yunlin County (雲林縣) in central Taiwan. This magnificently mountainous area is best-known for the mountain resort of Caoling (草嶺), one of my very favorite destinations in Taiwan. Caoling was hit badly by the two biggest natural disasters to hit Taiwan in recent years (the great 921 Earthquake of 1999, and Typhoon Morakot a decade later). It’s long since rebounded from those misfortunes, however, and can get uncomfortably crowded on busy long weekends. About ten kilometers downstream lies magnificent but neglected Zhanghu (樟 湖) where all those arresting curiosities I mentioned earlier can be found. Like Caoling, Zhanghu was severely affected by both 921 and Morakot, but unfortunately it never completely recovered from that double whammy. It will be decades perhaps before the

scars of Morakot are completely healed, but paths up to Zhanghu’s marvelous waterfalls have been rebuilt, the road down into the scenic area (which for several years after Morakot was accessible only by scooter) has been improved, and the area richly warrants at least a half-day visit. Zhanghu’s sights lie scattered over a broad area, but for the best sights, make a beeline for Zhanghu Scenic Area (樟湖風景區). The road to the scenic area ends Zhanghu's famous fossil beds at a rebuilt suspension footbridge.
