The Vicar, the Revd Heather Short retired at the end of May but will be living in the Vicarage until the end of June. Her last Service in our parish was on Sunday, 14th May and her last Service in the Benefice was at Marden on 24th May. Presentations were made to her and she was thanked for all she has done for the Benefice during the twelve years she has been here. This was followed by an excellent lunch. There was a good attendance from the seven churches and altogether it was a good ‘send-off’! During the inter-regnum Services at church will continue as usual except there will be no 8.00am Service on the 1st Sunday of the month. We have had generous offers of help from the Revd Preb David Roberts, the Revd Alan Seabrook and the Revd Alison Leigh. The inter-regnum may last some time. The Archdeacon will meet soon with the Churchwardens and later with the parishioners before a Statement of Needs is drawn up. After all the political upheaval with Brexit and the Election, how pleasant it was to sit in St Michael’s and enjoy “Music for a Summer’s Evening” on 10th June. It was an excellent concert given by Ludlow Concert Band with Henry Kennedy playing the clarinet. Henry is still studying at the Royal Academy of Music in London but will undoubtedly be a star of the future. In July, we look forward to the “Open Gardens Week-end” - 15th &16th July. Ten gardens will be open to the public. Refreshments will be served in Church, where there will also be some special flower arrangements and some stalls. We were amazed, last year, at the beautiful gardens in our parish, the variety of plants and ideas. Do visit the gardens and come along to see the flowers. The event will end with a Festival Evensong at 6.00pm on the Sunday, at which the Archdeacon of Hereford, the Venerable Paddy Benson will preach and preside. He is looking forward to meeting people, hearing about the parish and our thoughts on a new Vicar. June has not been the best of months with the terrorist attacks in Manchester and London. In the Christian faith we are told to “love one another” and “treat our neighbour as ourselves”. The interesting thing is that all the world’s major religions have the same message. They all teach us to live in peace and harmony with nature and one another! Vivien Moffitt & Tom James-Moore. Our churches will be very busy! During Lent we have travelled with Jesus, following the accounts of his work in our Gospels, hearing the words he spoke, sharing in the joy of the disciples and their despair on Good Friday. The Cross casts its shadow on the last days of Jesus life, and he is laid to rest in a tomb guarded by soldiers. Then Easter Day dawns, we see the empty tomb, and our Alleluias ring out, “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed” Peter Millar expresses the wonder and mystery of the resurrection in his poem, The Invitation of Easter: And across our beautiful, evolving world, another Easter dawns, tenderly inviting us to ponder upon wider truths and alternative visions.

  • Introduction
    INTRODUCTION Bodenham, either homestead or enclosure of a man called BOTA or BODA, or Old English for “place where the Beadle lived”, is an attractive village which lies just east of the A49 on the eastern edge of Dinmore Hill mid way between Hereford and Leominster. It falls entirely in an Area of Great Landscape Value and is a Conservation Area. The River Lugg on which it stands is one of the few rivers in the country to be designated throughout its length as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Lugg is a Celtic word for “bright stream”. There are interesting old houses and timbered cottages, and the interesting church of St Michael and All Angels is well worth a visit. The village has strong associations with the Devereux and Arkwright families and ample evidence of their influence on the area is to be seen on the walks. Based on the footpaths of Bodenham (BM) the walks include some connecting footpaths in Hope under Dinmore (HD) and Marden (MR) in order to create circular walks. The series of notes draw attention to the points of interest on the walks and their historical background. In 1990 a group of retired residents, organised by Bodenham Ramblers, joined, in cooperation with Hereford and Worcester County Council, a project to open up public rights of way by the year 2000. Work in Bodenham was completed in 1991 and the group went on to restore, in total, some 35 miles (56 km) of paths in 7 further parishes. The work was carried out with enthusiasm, much humour and a sense of achievement.

Bus pass start times. Herefordshire Council have announced that the 09.30 starting time for bus passes comes into effect on 27th March. Passes will be valid from 09.30 until 23.00 from Monday to Friday and at all times at weekends. Large vehicles using Chapel Lane. There have been reports of large vehicles using Chapel Lane and damaging the verges and ditches. Bodenham Parish Council is taking action to curtail the use of Chapel Lane by these vehicles. Amey have made repairs to the verges and ditches. Oak posts have now been installed to protect the grass verges on School Lane.     Strategic Flood Risk Assessment Future Development and the Sequential Test 5. FUTURE DEVELOPMENT AND THE SEQUENTIAL TEST A sequential risk-based approach to determining the suitability of land for development in flood risk areas is central to government policy, and should be applied at all levels of the planning process. Local Planning Authorities allocating land in Local Development Documents should always apply the Sequential Test to demonstrate that there are no reasonably available sites in other areas with a lower probability of flooding. This Chapter addresses one of the core requirements of the SFRA, namely to apply a sequential risk approach to the allocation of potential development land identified by the LPA. Evidence and guidance in this Chapter will be of use both to the Local Planning Authority in preparing Local Development Documents (LDDs). Developers should also consult this section to identify in broad terms where potential development sites are least and most affected by flood risk issues within Herefordshire. 5.1 Assessment of Development Pressures 5.1.1 Growth Point Status and Housing Projections Herefordshire is one of 45 locations in the country to be granted New Growth Point status by the government. New Growth Points will deliver a substantial number of new homes to help first time buyers onto the property ladder and enable towns and cities to grow their economies by creating new jobs and encouraging business development. Herefordshire Council currently aims to build approximately 8,500 homes by 2016. New transport infrastructure will be provided in association with the new housing development and the Edgar Street Grid area of Hereford will be regenerated.
