Dear friends This month marks the end of a series of events marking the centenary of the First World War. At 11am on 11th November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent and the world would never be the same again. The ways in which we have remembered have varied, but in common with people immediately after the war, many events have tried to make sense of what happened and have tried to ensure that good came out of so much suffering. The next few years will mark the centenary of many of our parish war memorials, but rather than simply trying to preserve the memory of those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom, many communities and individuals set up memorial funds, houses and community halls. Preston Wynne and Felton’s Memorial Hall (which houses the parishes’ war memorial) is just one local example.

I have been regularly visiting the battlefields in France and Flanders for over twenty years and have been impressed by the amount of money and effort spent on new visitor centres, interpretation boards, trails and monuments that have sprung up around the sites of battle in France and Belgium. It leads one to hope that the lessons of war and the virtues of peace may continue to be learned by successive generations. However, despite so much effort being put into remembrance, we seem to live in an increasingly insecure world, where institutions set up to promote world peace and cooperation being undermined from all sides.

A lesson learned by many who fought through the First World War was that Jesus Christ was not a remote, kingly figure, divorced from the realities of life. The Army Chaplain J Studdart-Kennedy (“Woodbine Willie” as he was known to the troops), found that it was the vision of Jesus upon the cross that comforted the men – knowing that God suffered with them. I find great comfort that in an uncertain world, Jesus Christ walks with us and shares our joys and our sorrows.

On 11th November, along with other events that weekend, we will be pausing to remember those of our parish who died in both world wars and subsequent conflicts – service details are in this magazine. It would be great if you were able to join us. With every blessing, Paul

The Veteran (1916) We came upon him sitting in the sun. blinded by war, and left. And past the fence there came young soldiers from the Hand & Flower asking advice of his experience

And he said this, and that, and told them tales And all the nightmares of each empty head blew in air. Then, hearing us beside “Poor chaps, how do they know what it’s like” he said

And we stood there and watched him as he sat turning his sockets where they went away Until it came to one of us to ask “And you’re – how old?” “Nineteen, come third of May.” Margaret Postgate Cole 12 SPONSORSHIP FORM Flower Sponsorship “Lest We Forget” Ž‡ƒ•‡—•‡„Ž‘ ƒ’‹–ƒŽ•Ƭ–‹ ƒ’’”‘’”‹ƒ–‡„‘š St Michael & All Angels, ™‘—Ž†Ž‹‡–‘•’‘•‘”ǣǦ Bodenham ‘’’›͉ͷȋȌȋ™‹ŽŽ„‡’ƒ”–‘ˆƒŽƒ”‰‡”†‡•‹‰Ȍ ƒŽŽ Ž‘™‡”””ƒ‰‡‡–͉ͳͷȋȌ 10th – 11th November 2018 ‡†‹—””ƒ‰‡‡–͉͵ͲȋȌ ƒ”‰‡†‡•‹‰͉ͷͲȋȌ ͉ͳͲͲȋȌ Would you like to sponsor an arrangement at the Armistice Centenary Weekend in the church ǣǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤǤ for your family, in memory of a loved one or …………………………………………………………………………………………………………. perhaps for someone lost in the wars? …………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Hampton Ward Newsletter The House of Lords Select Committee on the Rural Economy, visited the County in mid-September to meet with the Leader of the Council and the Cabinet Member for Economy and Corporate Services, along with members of the established business community to discuss and highlight the financial and infrastructure challenges being faced by rural counties, such as here in Herefordshire. The committee heard at first-hand how the county was supporting local businesses and took this valuable opportunity to share with the select committee the council’s vision and plans for future business development in the county. You will be aware that the council took the decision in 2017 to participate in the government’s refugee dispersal scheme and to extend our pledge to support the resettlement of 95 Syrian refugees. This decision was not popular in some quarters, but it’s clear the decision was the right one and it’s heartening to hear that these families have settled in and are being made to feel welcome in the county. The council peer review in February highlighted the fact that our external communications should be more proactive and co-ordinated to better promote the council’s achievements and to increase awareness of its forward vision. To these ends, a new quarterly publication was launched at the end of September, headed ‘Herefordshire Now’. This publication will provide the council with an outlet to explain its work, its achievements and future ambition. Related articles will also help explain how your council tax is spent and how the council operates in partnership with other outside organisations and local businesses. The publication will be available digitally, via the council’s web site, along with 5,000 printed copies to be distributed throughout established community outlets, such as council offices, libraries and leisure centres. The printing of the first issue has been at a cost of £499, but advertising revenue should cover the cost of future editions. The first ‘Parish Council Summit’ is being held on 17th October with all Parish Councillors being invited. The aim of the meeting is to improve the way we work with Parish Councils by sharing our collective knowledge and experience, to address the various challenges we all face and to identify the practical ways to better serve the residents of Herefordshire. My Ward colleagues and I will be sent a written report following the meeting and your Parish Councils will publish the results of any decisions made during the summit, on their web sites. You will be aware of the installation of fibre broadband cables throughout the Ward and the company laying the cables is, Complete Utilities. If you have any complaints or queries relating to the installation (but not the actual broadband service) we have been advised that the number to call is: 01452 500 995 or email: [email protected]

The Committee of Lugg Valley Friends Cancer Research UK have, reluctantly, decided to discontinue our fund raising Group at the end of 2018 and, therefore, the above event will be our last. The Group was formed some 40 years ago and has raised a considerable amount of money thanks to the people who have supported us during that time.
