At 11am on 11th November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent and the world would never be the same again. The ways in which we have remembered have varied, but in common with people immediately after the war, many events have tried to make sense of what happened and have tried to ensure that good came out of so much suffering. The next few years will mark the centenary of many of our parish war memorials, but rather than simply trying to preserve the memory of those that paid the ultimate price for our freedom, many communities and individuals set up memorial funds, houses and community halls. Preston Wynne and Felton’s Memorial Hall (which houses the parishes’ war memorial) is just one local example. I have been regularly visiting the battlefields in France and Flanders for over twenty years and have been impressed by the amount of money and effort spent on new visitor centres, interpretation boards, trails and monuments that have sprung up around the sites of battle in France and Belgium. It leads one to hope that the lessons of war and the virtues of peace may continue to be learned by successive generations. However, despite so much effort being put into remembrance, we seem to live in an increasingly insecure world, where institutions set up to promote world peace and cooperation being undermined from all sides. A lesson learned by many who fought through the First World War was that Jesus Christ was not a remote, kingly figure, divorced from the realities of life. The Army Chaplain J Studdart-Kennedy (“Woodbine Willie” as he was known to the troops), found that it was the vision of Jesus upon the cross that comforted the men – knowing that God suffered with them. I find great comfort that in an uncertain world, Jesus Christ walks with us and shares our joys and our sorrows. On 11th November, along with other events that weekend, we will be pausing to remember those of our parish who died in both world wars and subsequent conflicts – service details are in this magazine. It would be great if you were able to join us.
