Dear Friends, This year the month of March is full of major Festivals, St David’s Day, Mothering Sunday, St Patrick’s Day, Passion Sunday, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Day. Our churches will be very busy! During Lent we have travelled with Jesus, following the accounts of his work in our Gospels, hearing the words he spoke, sharing in the joy of the disciples and their despair on Good Friday. The Cross casts its shadow on the last days of Jesus life, and he is laid to rest in a tomb guarded by soldiers. Then Easter Day dawns, we see the empty tomb, and our Alleluias ring out, “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed” Peter Millar expresses the wonder and mystery of the resurrection in his poem, The Invitation of Easter:

And across our beautiful, evolving world, another Easter dawns, tenderly inviting us to ponder upon wider truths and alternative visions. Truths of both heart and mind that find their roots in the practicality of God. Basic truths illumining our often uncertain journeys – allowing us to reconnect with the energies of Christ: that life does come from death; that hate is not the final word; that the broken continue to sing with joy; that the trees and the mountains clap their hands; that forgiveness resides in the heart of the human condition; that love, with its multiple faces, remains our companion. So Christ is risen! Risen again in the midst of a broken world. risen again so that we too may be a people of hope who walk in the light of Christ, restored by resurrection.

The month of March is full of the new growth of Spring, may we find joy in the newness and promise of Easter and the grace of Christ risen. Yours in Christ, Heather

13 County Councillor’s Report This month I’ve been looking at the future of Queenswood and Bodenham Lakes. These beautiful areas are visited and enjoyed by residents from throughout Herefordshire, and beyond.

Two local not for profit organisations, Herefordshire Wildlife Trust and New Leaf Sustainable Development Ltd, have formed a partnership specifically to safeguard the long-term future of the iconic Herefordshire beauty spots, Queenswood and Bodenham Lake.

Herefordshire Council will transfer the management responsibility of both the Queenswood Country Park and adjacent Bodenham Lake nature reserve to the partner organisations, while retaining both in public ownership, via a 99 year leasehold ‘community asset transfer’. At the time of writing, it is expected that the transfer will take place on 1st March

The partnership intends to form a Community Interest Company (CIC) to oversee the running of the sites and will seek external funding for much needed investment in both sites. Plans include improved visitor facilities at Queenswood, where it also wants to initiate an environmental education programme whilst developing the current woodland management for the benefit of both people and wildlife.

All of this will be done whilst retaining the essence of this high-profile site. Meanwhile, Bodenham Lake will continue to be managed as a nature reserve, ensuring the site retains its status as a wildlife haven and there is no prospect of housing development, or the sale of land, within the sites.

As there will be no funding from Herefordshire Council, parking charges will be introduced at Queenswood (but not at Bodenham Lakes) to fund the running of both sites. Charges will be £1 for an hour, £2 for 2 hours and £3 for over two hours. Visitors can become Friends of Queenswood and Bodenham Lake for £40 a year which provides free parking for one vehicle, plus discounted entry to events and updates.

The former visitor centre will be reopened, to sell local produce and gifts, plus providing visitor information about the sites

Local communities will be able to contribute to the management of both sites through site-specific management groups. It is envisaged that each group will have representatives from the community, Parish Council, user groups, e.g. Sailing Club, and representatives from New Leaf and HWT. Each site management group will have a community member on the CIC Board.

A variety of volunteers are needed at both sites and anyone interested can get more information from www.herefordshirewt.org/node/3040 Cllr Bruce Baker

Roald Dahl Project: Very well done to our children in Class Four, as they performed a drama piece that they had put together with help from a drama coach. Lots of us went along from school to watch at the Courtyard in Hereford, and they made us all very proud!

Netball Matches: On Monday 25th January we took two teams of Netball players to Burley Gate school. They won both of their matches against stiff opposition—well done to everyone who took part!

Team Bees: This company offers sports-based childcare at a very competitive price to several schools in Herefordshire. There is a link on our school website to the booking page of the Team Bees website, for bookings: http://www.st-michaels.hereford.sch.uk/afterschool.htm However, if you need to use the service in an emergency, you MUST book by telephoning Sharon Corfield on 07834787858.

“Go Toads!”: We will be working on a community project with Herefordshire Wildlife Trust over the next few weeks at school and in the local area. Our local area is the centre for a really important natural event that happens every year. Each year, over the next few weeks there is a mass migration of toads from Dinmore down to Bodenham Lakes. On one part of their journey they need to cross the road that runs along by the War Memorial. We will be designing a sign as part of a competition at school, that will be made into a real road sign for the route. We will also be taking part in a series of activities in school and at the lakes in support of this topic. Watch out for more details from Hayley Herridge of Herefordshire Wildlife Trust soon!

Academy Consultation: Thank you to all of those people who have taken the chance to respond to our invitation to comment on our proposal to convert to Academy status under the auspices of the Bishop Anthony Educational Trust (BAET). This consultation period has now closed. We will consider the few responses that we have had very carefully. Please find more information on the BAET at their website: www.baet.org.uk

Christingle Service: This event took place last week at church and was once again a very special occasion. Thank you to those parents and carers who were able to come along and take part. The point when the children stood in a circle and lit their Christingles as we then said a prayer together was beautiful. Your donations totalled almost £90 for The Children’s Society, which is wonderful, so thank you very much.

Lucton Cross Country Competition: On 11th February we took a team to Lucton School for their Cross Country competition. Thanks to Mrs Alty and Miss Powis for organising this for us, and for those parents who were able to come along. In the end the children acquitted themselves very well and thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to take part – well done to everyone!

18 Welsh Water essential water mains upgrades We will be digging up your road The time has come for us to replace the water mains in your area. We’re doing this to make sure that your water stays clean and safe for decades to come. We need to replace around 7.5 kilometres of water pipes in Bodenham. Where and when: We need to work on the following roads: • Bowley Lane • Isle of Rhea • Berrington Drive• • Church Lane • Woodhouse Road • A417 • C1121 - Lugg Bridge to Bodenham Manor • C1125 - Millcroft Road - England’s Gate to Lugg Bridge This work will begin on 1st February and we expect to complete it within 5 months. We have been working with Herefordshire Highways to minimise the disruption and we will use two-way traffic lights and give and take traffic management where possible but we will need to close the road to through traffic when we work on parts of Bowley Lane, 121,C1 Millcroft Road, C1125, Woodhouse Road and Isle of Rhea. We will put signs up in advance to let you know exactly when this will be. Access will be maintained for residents although you may need to get to your property using a diversionary route which will be clearly signposted. Work will begin at Isle of Rhea on 1st February. The work on Bowley Lane will take place between 15th February and the end of March. We will be working on Church Walk during the February half term and the work on the C1121 will be done during the Easter half term to minimise disruption to school transport. Updates on our progress will be available on our website while we are working in your area, these can be found at www.dwrcymru.com – In your area – Planned work. If you need to call us, please ask for Sheena Howells or Lucy Barnett on 01443 452526. We know that our work can be inconvenient in the short-term. But once we’re finished, the improvements will benefit the whole community. This scheme will be carried out by our contract partners, Eiran Civil Engineering Ltd. Normal working hours will be 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Sheena Howells, Welsh Water.
