Our churches will be very busy! During Lent we have travelled with Jesus, following the accounts of his work in our Gospels, hearing the words he spoke, sharing in the joy of the disciples and their despair on Good Friday. The Cross casts its shadow on the last days of Jesus life, and he is laid to rest in a tomb guarded by soldiers. Then Easter Day dawns, we see the empty tomb, and our Alleluias ring out, “Christ is risen. He is risen indeed” Peter Millar expresses the wonder and mystery of the resurrection in his poem, The Invitation of Easter: And across our beautiful, evolving world, another Easter dawns, tenderly inviting us to ponder upon wider truths and alternative visions.

  • Whitbourne WTW Opened April 1966
WHITBOURNE WATER TREATMENT WORKS £857,000 water scheme for Bromyard area Whitbourne Water Pumping Station and Treatment Works at the time of its official opening in April 1966 This scheme was first conceived as a result of the government survey of Herefordshire’s water supply needs in the post WW2 era, but it was not approved by the Minister of Housing and Local Government until 1960 when the Herefordshire Water Board was put in place. At the ‘opening’ of the works, which had been designed to supply water to 12,000 people in the Bromyard, Ledbury, Hereford, Leominster & Wigmore rural districts, and meet about one eighth of Herefordshire’s water supply needs, it was described as one of the most modern waterworks in the west Midlands. The pumping and filtration plant had the capacity to supply 805,000 gallons a day from the River Teme (a tributary of the River Severn) through a network of 70 miles of pipeline. It was the single biggest scheme completed by the Herefordshire Water Board. Chairman, Mr SR Southall, said that in the past six years the Board had laid 350 miles of mains - ‘as much as the councils ever laid from the dawn of time until we took over’. He said that the board had made water available to 25,000 people previously without mains supply. To do this, 17 pumping stations and 18 water reservoirs had been built. He added that in addition, ten more pumping stations, six reservoirs and 150 miles of mains were then under construction. ** £100 in 1966 = c£1,585 in 2020.

  • Introduction
INTRODUCTION Bodenham, either homestead or enclosure of a man called BOTA or BODA, or Old English for “place where the Beadle lived”, is an attractive village which lies just east of the A49 on the eastern edge of Dinmore Hill mid way between Hereford and Leominster. It falls entirely in an Area of Great Landscape Value and is a Conservation Area. The River Lugg on which it stands is one of the few rivers in the country to be designated throughout its length as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Lugg is a Celtic word for “bright stream”. There are interesting old houses and timbered cottages, and the interesting church of St Michael and All Angels is well worth a visit. The village has strong associations with the Devereux and Arkwright families and ample evidence of their influence on the area is to be seen on the walks. Based on the footpaths of Bodenham (BM) the walks include some connecting footpaths in Hope under Dinmore (HD) and Marden (MR) in order to create circular walks. The series of notes draw attention to the points of interest on the walks and their historical background. In 1990 a group of retired residents, organised by Bodenham Ramblers, joined, in cooperation with Hereford and Worcester County Council, a project to open up public rights of way by the year 2000. Work in Bodenham was completed in 1991 and the group went on to restore, in total, some 35 miles (56 km) of paths in 7 further parishes. The work was carried out with enthusiasm, much humour and a sense of achievement.

  • April 2018 Eddy...And Others..Go to Sammy Millers Museum
LEOMINSTER CLASSIC MOTOR CYCLE CLUB NEWSLETTER Website: www.lcmcc.uk Email: [email protected] April 2018 Eddy...and others..go to Sammy Millers Museum This meant a 5 o clock get up for me, followed by picking up my son Doug from Knighton, arriving at the Hereford pick up point around 7.15 after several miles of thick mist. Ron and Chris soon followed, then others. We boarded a luxury coach and did a circuit of Hereford for various pickups. The trip down was quite uneventful, even the sun came out, until we reached the New Forest. Ten miles of narrow lanes in a giant coach saw us eventually arrive at the museum. Here we split up to peruse the exotic motorcycles most of which you do not see at normal bike events except for a MK 1V Douglas which was a year younger than mine which I use as a winter hack. The racing bikes were topped by the magnificent Moto Guzzi V8. 1 Later in the day Sammy Miller took us into the workshop giving us an informal talk on the restoration of his bikes. Somehow this turned into a discussion between Sammy and Chris Moore on the size of nipples!! Circumnavigating miles of lanes again saw us on the motorway being treated to torrential rain, thunder and lightning before arriving back in Hereford around 8 o clock. Altogether it was an excellent day, just a pity that more members did not take up this opportunity after all the hard work Steve Hackett had put into organising it.
