What a difference a couple of months makes! After September 11th America was nothing less than under siege. First, the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Then there was a week of stranded travelers and eerily empty skies except for the occasional prowling fighter jet. The entire country came to a halt and it was just as well because we were all in a state of shock and mourning. We literally could not think of anything else but our sorrow. Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse the anthrax deaths started. It felt like we were in a hole we could never get out of. Despite our despair, however, the sun did continue to rise and birds did continue to sing. Gradually life began to take on a sense of routine once again and we adapted to the tighter security and the new rules. There was a rather disquieting announcement from the government encouraging us to travel again but they also stated that if you happened to be on a hijacked airliner it would be shot down immediately. Not exactly a winning marketing campaign for the travel industry. Nevertheless, little by little Americans returned to their business. The American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Anaheim last November had only about 2/3 the normal number of delegates. Actually if you were able to get Anaheim the meeting was very nice. Usually the AHA is chaos with wall-to-wall people. But this year you could get a hotel room within walking distance of the convention center and there was never a wait for a lunch table. I haven’t seen an AHA like that in decades. Amazingly most of the basic science presenters did show up for their talks. Bob Mentzer, Masafumi Kitakaze, Masatsugu Hori and myself organize a small satellite symposium at the AHA meetings every year. Understandably our advance registration was miniscule and on October 1st we had to make a go or no-go decision with the Queen Mary where we were contracted to meet. After much debate among the four of us we canceled. In actuality we probably should have gone through with the meeting as people had started to venture out of their bunkers by November. On the second day of the AHA conference I woke up to the morning news cameras trained on a column of smoke rising from a downed airliner in a New York suburb.

The board is also responsible for the appointment of a CEO, or the top executive, and determines overall goals and achievements expected from the management. Furthermore, directors use their relationships with various stakeholders to support the company’s activities and to open new markets. The General Assembly is to monitor and evaluate the Board performance, and decides whether to keep it, to change some of its members or to change it completely. Therefore, it is important that the GA members are not themselves company directors. If this is the case, it means that the board is accountable to itself in the form of the GA.

    PROFESSOR SIRMAGDIYACOUB Faculty of Medicine, National Heart & Lung Institute Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery Sir Magdi Yacoub is Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London and Founder and Director of Research at the Harefield Heart Science Centre (Magdi Yacoub Institute) overseeing over 60 scientists and students in the areas of tissue engineering, myocardial regeneration, stem cell biology, end stage heart failure and transplant immunology. He is also Founder and Director of Magdi Yacoub Research Network which has created the Qatar Cardiovascular Research Center in collaboration with Qatar Foundation and Hamad Medical Corporation. Professor Yacoub was born in Egypt and graduated from Cairo University Medical School in 1957, trained in London and held an Assistant Professorship at the University of Chicago. He is a former BHF Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery for over 20 years and Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Harefield Hospital from 1969-2001 and Royal Brompton Hospital from 1986-2001. Professor Yacoub established the largest heart and lung transplantation programme in the world where more than 2,500 transplant operations have been performed. He has also developed novel operations for a number of complex congenital heart anomalies. He was knighted for his services to medicine and surgery in 1991, awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 1998 and Fellowship of The Royal Society in 1999. A lifetime outstanding achievement award in recognition of his contribution to medicine was presented to Professor Yacoub by the Secretary of State for Health in the same year. Research led by Professor Yacoub include tissue engineering heart valves, myocardial regeneration, novel left ventricular assist devices and wireless sensors with collaborations within Imperial College, nationally and internationally.

    Curriculum Vitae Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub, FRS; born 16 November 1935 in Egypt, is Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgeryat Imperial College London. Prof Yacoub's major achievements may be summarised: establishing heart transplantation in UK and becoming the world's leading transplant surgeon establishing and becoming a master of the "Ross Procedure" or pulmonary autograft, including a randomised control trial pioneering the modern arterial switch operation promoting the use of left ventricular assist devices for the 'Bridge to Recovery' and establishing the largest experience in the world establishing the Heart Science Centre, Magdi Yacoub Institute for research into the causes and treatment of cardiac disease establishing the Chain of Hope Charity which provides cardiothoracic surgical care to the developing world championing academic medicine, humanitarian surgery and becoming an example of a minority surgeon who flourished in institution-dominated field. Early life and career The son of a surgeon, Yacoub studied at Cairo University and qualified as a doctor in 1957. He reportedly said he decided to specialise in heart surgery after an aunt died of heart disease in her early 20s. He moved to Britain in 1962, then taught at The University of Chicago. He became a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Harefield Hospital in 1973.
