Innovation and relationship with society constitute imperative aspects of the XXI Century University. PUCRS, as a catholic, confessional, community university and integrating part of the almost bicentennial Marist educational tradition, has been developing its planning and reflection founded on these themes. As such, we promote annual seminars dedicated to these topics that gather a great number of our professors, researchers and members of the Higher Administration, as well as other relevant initiatives such as faculty refresher courses and courses aimed at our administrative personnel. Reflecting once more about our own mission and about the reality of Higher Education in our country, beyond our frontiers and the borders of the continent, we have noticed a series of variables that determine and challenge our commitment with an institution of excellence, be it in a national or international milieu. I consider it relevant to point out the following: - The change of the social, cognitive and relational profile of our students comparing to alumni of the last decades; - The different methods and instruments of teaching, researching and learning due to the new possibilities offered by information and communication technologies; - The growing academic mobility of students, professors and the consequent internationalization of our curricula, courses and institutions; - The ever present demands for new courses and specializations to meet the requirements and competences of the world of labor; All of these offer opportunities for innovation in Higher Education, so that it can give an answer to the inexorable present demands and changes of society, that is: - The unquestionable effort for quality; - A better alignment between innovations inserted in the learning/teaching process and research; 8 AUDY, J. (Orgs.) - A bigger flexibility of the pedagogical projects in the light of curricular directives; - The incentive given to multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary studies and researches; - The increment to continuous education and life long learning; - The relevance of research and innovation concerning regional needs. Besides, it is imperative to take into account the ethical demands or well behavior also pertaining to innovation in Higher Education. Among them it is worth mentioning: - Respect to human rights; - Education for all; - Social responsibility; - Eradication of violence; - Promotion of peace; - Eradication of poverty; - Ecological awareness; - The rise of more integrative, egalitarian and sustainable economies. My deep gratitude to the renowned professors from distinguished universities of Spain, the United States, Israel, Mexico, Portugal and from our beloved country, who contributed with their knowledge to the reflection on such important themes. Likewise, I would like to express my appreciation to representatives of national and international Higher Education agencies and organizations for making it possible to connect their ideals with the modus operandi of the academia. To the special professors of our University, my esteem and respect for their different ways of participating in the search for innovation in Higher Education. A special mention to Prof. Jorge Audy, Provost of Research and Graduate Studies at PUCRS and to Prof. Marília Costa Morosini, Dean of the School of Education at PUCRS, by their bold effort in the making of this event and the organization of the present publication.
