English, Communication and Cultural Studies. 2008 ii MUSIC VIDEO AUTEURS ABSTRACT Music video is an intriguing genre of television due to the fact that music drives the images and ideas found in numerous and varied examples of the form. Pre-recorded pieces of pop music are visually written upon in a palimpsest manner, resulting in an immediate and entertaining synchronisation of sound and vision. Ever since the popularity of MTV in the early 1980s, music video has been a persistent fixture in academic discussion, most notably in the work of writers like E. Ann Kaplan, Simon Frith and Andrew Goodwin. What has been of major interest to such cultural scholars is the fact that music video was designed as a promotional tool in their inception, supporting album sales and increasing the stardom of the featured recording artists. Authorship in music video studies has been traditionally kept to the representation of music stars, how they incorporate post-modern references and touch upon wider cultural themes (the Marilyn Monroe pastiche for the Madonna video, Material Girl (1985) for instance). What has not been greatly discussed is the contribution of music video directors, and the reason for that is the target audience for music videos are teenagers, who respond more to the presence of the singer or the band than the unknown figure of the director, a view that is also adhered to by music television channels like MTV.

    BEN WATT BIOGRAPHY Ben Watt firs appeared in London in 1981 as a young nineteen-year-old experimental songwriter-singer-guitarist. 1982’s 5-tracK EP Summer into Winter featured Robert Wyatt. His early worK culminated in his sparse atmospheric debut album North Marine Drive (1983, UK Independent Album Chart, No 9). In 1983 he put solo plans on hold to perform and write full-time with Tracey Thorn in their recently-formed duo Everything But The Girl. The band stayed active until 2000, delivering twelve UK Top 40 singles, two platinum and seven gold UK Top 20 albums and one gold US album. 1995’s global hit Missing reached No. 2 on the US Billboard Top 100. The 1994 album Amplified Heart and the 1996 album WalKing Wounded - for which Watt was nominated as Best Producer at the Q Awards - each sold over a million copies. The duo’s career was dramatically interrupted for a year in 1992 by Watt’s drawn- out hospitalisation and near-death experience with a rare auto-immune disease Churg-Strauss Syndrome (aka EGPA) with which he now still lives - a period documented in his acclaimed 1996 memoir, Patient (New YorK Times Notable BooK of the Year; shortlisted for the Esquire Non-Fiction Award; Sunday Times BooK of the Year) Everything But The Girl quit on a high in 2000. Watt moved out of the mainstream into record production (Beth Orton), remixing (inc Sade, Maxwell, Meshell Ndegeocello), DJing and clubland. He co-launched the influential London day-night Sunday party and compilation series Lazy Dog (1998-2003) and was creative director, resident DJ and part-owner at west London night clubs Cherry Jam and Neighbourhood (2001-2003) before starting his own award-winning electronic record label and club night Buzzin' Fly in 2003.

Out Feb. 20, "The World As I See It" (King Street) delivers on the promises of his hits: 2005's "Sandcastles" (co- produced with Jerome Sydenham), a rare male vocal that galvanized the international DJ community, and his 2006 remixes of "Cure and the Cause" (by Fish Go Deep) and "Most Precious Love" (by Blaze), which became worldwide singalongs. The album combines vintage soul and modern thump into true-blue house music that satisfies finicky lifelong heads and fist-pumping new initiates. "I just wanted to make a quality dance album; I don't portray it to be anything other than what it is," Ferrer says. "I'm making seven-minute songs. I'm not hiding the fact that it's club music." But club music that's this, well, musical, is rare. "Church Lady," with a droll, been-there-done-that vocal by Danil Wright, offers a groovier, less frenetic take on gospel than dance usually puts forth; "Underground Is my Home" is one of the best house-appreciation tracks ever cut (and there have been many).
