E continuavo a raccogliere, fiducioso... Ebbi così la soddisfazione di convincermi che non avevo lavorato invano e che la mia tenacia, la mia pazienza, la mia fede avevano avuto ragione della noncuranza, dell’incredulità, dell’ironia di tanti! Sono già più di 250 gli studiosi che per una ragione o per l’altra hanno trovato nella mia Collezione aiuto di notizie e fonte di studio” (Ulderico Rolandi, Il libretto per musica attraverso i tempi, Roma, Edizioni dell’Ateneo, 1951; pp.

  • A Librettist's Reflections on Opera in Our Times
Israel Eliraz A LIBRETTIST'S REFLECTIONS ON OPERA IN OUR TIMES [1] Pierre Boulez may have mourned the death of the opera and suggested setting fire to opera houses (he has repented since and has even written in this rnusical form himsel~, but the Old Lady is still going strong. She is no Ionger as regal and as much admired as in the 18th century, nor is she as popular and vital as she was in mid-I9th century for bold young rivals have entered the arena: film, radio, musicals and television. But reviewing the new operas written in this century, from MOSES UND ARON by Schoenberg and WOZZECK by Berg, to works by Luigi Dallapiccola, lldebrando Pizzetti, Werner Egk, Marcel Delannoy and others, one is taken by surprise by the abundance, versatility and ingenuity in musical, theatrical and ideological terms, of modern opera. What the rnusical avant -garde considered a defunct creature, a 'dinosaur' of sorts (this strange animal is over 370 years old), became, to their dismay, a phoenix redux. At tirnes it metarnorphosed into political drarna (Weiii-Brecht); at others it returned to the oratory form (Stravinsky, Honegger, Debussy), and on still other occasions it turns upon itself with laudable irony, as in Mauricio Kagel's STAATSTHEATER. Anylhing can happen in an opera, all is allowed and, if one rnay venture to express some optirnisrn - which is not easy in our province - it still has some surprises in store for us. [2] Music Iovers have been accustorned to think that it is in the nature of opera to address the 'larger issues'- biblical, rnylhological, historical, national.

Kurt Weill Newsletter Volume 14, Number 1 13 [Continued from page 12] 20 WEILL IN BERLIN TO LENYA IN LEIPZIG, [3? JUNE 1927] Berlin, Friday My Tütilein, At last I have time to write to you at length. In Essen that was out of the question. But now I can give you a blow-by-blow account, so you’ll have some idea of what I’ve been up to. The flight was magnificent. One actually feels amazingly safe, and much less nervous than on a train. The most beautiful moment is when the airplane very slowly lifts itself into the air. On Monday afternoon we [Brecht and Weill] had a preliminary talk [with the Essen officials], and in the evening when we walked every which way through the factories, some overwhelming acoustic impressions suddenly gave me an entirely new concept of sound for the play. Tuesday we drove ten hours through the entire Ruhr region up to the Rhine. Koch knows the territory very inti- mately and could comment on everything.1 Coming out of the poisonous fumes of the Ruhr val- ley to the Rhine we immediately thought: Never go back into the poisonous gases! And we real- ized how beautiful it would be to recreate the colorful liveliness of this river instead of the gloomy gray factories that lie beyond it. The next day by noon we again emerged from the mines into daylight; then it became clear—the terrible horror down there, the boundless injus- tice that human beings have to endure, performing intolerably arduous labor seven hundred meters underground in complete darkness, in thick, smoldering air, just so that Krupp can add another 5 million to their 200 million a year—this needs to be said, and in such a way, indeed, that no one will ever forget it.

Whiting Associate Professor Charles H. Garrett Associate Professor Silke-Maria Weineck To my family ii Acknowledgements While writing this dissertation, I have been so fortunate to have the encouragement of many teachers, friends, and relatives, whose support has been instrumental in this process. My first thanks must go to my wonderful advisor, Dr. Jane Fulcher, and to my committee members, Dr. Charles Garrett, Dean Steven Whiting, and Dr. Silke-Maria Weineck, for their engaging and helpful feedback. Your comments and suggestions were the lifeblood of this dissertation, and I am so grateful for your help. To the life-long friends I made while at Michigan, thank you for making my time in Ann Arbor so enriching, both academically and personally. A thank you to Dennis and to my family, whose constant encouragement has been invaluable. Lastly, I would like to thank my mom and dad, who always encouraged my love of music, even if it meant sitting through eleven community theater productions of The Wizard of Oz. I am more grateful for your help than I could ever express, so I will simply say, “thank you.” iii Table of Contents Dedication .......................................................................................................................

  • Carl Orff in His Time
Carl Orff in his Time Speech on the occasion of Carl Orff's 100th birthday Munich, Prinzregententheater, 7 July 1995 By Hans Maier Carl Orff's hundredth birthday had hardly begun to approach than there erupted fierce arguments about the composer. They were concerned less with his work than with his life, and particularly with his behaviour during the Third Reich and in the years immediately after the war. New investigations into Orff's life and work, to which the Orff Centre in Munich rendered an outstanding service, went round the world in crassly-expressed news flashes that raised some (false) points. This triggered off confusion and consternation: Was Orff a Nazi? Was Orff a liar - someone who, like a Bavarian Astutulus, had cunningly led the occupying authorities by the nose? This was grist to their mill for those who had always known, like Gerald Abraham, who had always maintained that there were suspicious elements in the German's work, that "rhythmically hypnotic, totally diatonic neo-primitivism" that allows itself to be so easily connected with the stamping columns of the Third Reich. And promptly on the 28th January of this year, London Weekend Television, in a polemic disguised as "Documentation" presented SS-troops marching to Orff's music and showed pictures of dead bodies in concentration camps. O Fortuna velut luna! Carl Orff has often been portrayed and also misrepresented in his long life, though hardly ever with such malicious over-simplification as in this year of celebration and jubilation. There has never been any lack of distorted pictures, of mischievous personal descriptions of such multiform and protean characters.
