These could influence the provision of fishery resources. However, the Rokan River still has high varieties of fish. One of them is the fish from Cypriniformes. This study aims to list the species of fish from Cypriniformes. Fish samples were collected from fisherman from October 2012 to January 2013. The fish samples were then identified at the Zoological Laboratory of the Biologi Department, University of Riau. In this study, we found 2 families of Cypriniformes, Cyprinidae and Cobitidae. Cyprinidae consisted of 12 species and Cobitidae consisted of 2 species. Data pengukuran morfometrik ikan yaitu meliputi: panjang total, panjang baku/standar, panjang kepala, tinggi badan, panjang batang ekor, panjang sirip dada, panjang sirip perut, panjang sirip punggung, panjang sirip dubur dan tinggi batang ekor. Data meristik yaitu meliputi pengamatan jumlah sirip punggung, sirip dada, sirip perut, sirip anal, sirip ekor, tipe sirip ekor, tipe sisik dan warna tubuh. FLOODPLAIN RIVER FOOD WEBS IN THE LOWER MEKONG BASIN A Dissertation by CHOULY OU Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Chair of Committee, Kirk O. Winemiller Committee Members, Masami Fujiwara Thomas D. Olszewski Daniel L. Roelke Head of Department, Michael Masser December 2013 Major Subject: Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences Copyright 2013 Chouly Ou ABSTRACT The Mekong River is one of the world’s most important rivers in terms of its size, economic importance, cultural significance, productivity, and biodiversity. The Mekong River’s fisheries and biodiversity are threatened by major hydropower development and over-exploitation. Knowledge of river food web ecology is essential for management of the impacts created by anthropogenic activities on plant and animal populations and ecosystems. In the present study, I surveyed four tropical rivers in Cambodia within the Mekong River Basin. I examined the basal production sources supporting fish biomass in the four rivers during the dry and wet seasons and explored the relationship between trophic position and body size of fish at various taxonomic levels, among local species assemblages, and across trophic guilds. I used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to estimate fish trophic levels and the principal primary production sources supporting fishes. My study provides evidence that food web dynamics in tropical rivers undergo significant seasonal shifts and emphasizes that river food webs are altered by dams and flow regulation. Seston and benthic algae were the most important production sources supporting fish biomass during the dry season, and riparian macrophytes appeared to be the most important production source supporting fishes during the wet season.

  • Scale Morphologies of Freshwater Fishes at Tembat Forest Reserve, Terengganu, Malaysia (Morfologi Sisik Ikan Air Tawar Di Hutan Simpan Tembat, Terengganu, Malaysia)
Sains Malaysiana 46(9)(2017): 1429–1439 http://dx.doi.org/10.17576/jsm-2017-4609-11 Scale Morphologies of Freshwater Fishes at Tembat Forest Reserve, Terengganu, Malaysia (Morfologi Sisik Ikan Air Tawar di Hutan Simpan Tembat, Terengganu, Malaysia) FARAH AYUNI FARINORDIN*, WAN SERIBANI WAN NILAM, SHAHRIL MOD HUSIN, ABDULLAH SAMAT & SHUKOR MD. NOR ABSTRACT Scales are calcium carbonate and collagen-contained structures embedded within the fish epidermis and useful for species identification. This study aimed to describe morphological characteristics of scales and use the differences to prepare keys to species. Fishes were sampled from selected rivers of Tembat Forest Reserve, Hulu Terengganu. Specimens caught were from 3 families (Cyprinidae, Channidae, Nandidae) and 17 species. Each species was represented by ten individuals (size ranges 2.5 - 50 cm TL). The scales were removed, soaked in H2O2 (0.5%), NH3 (0.3%), DH2O and mounted between a pair of glass slides for digital photographing. The morphological descriptions were based on types of scales, distinctiveness of radii arrangement at the anterior field, radii cover, radii distribution, overall shape, focus position and focus pattern. Keys to species were constructed based on these scale morphological characters described. Measurements of scale total length (L), total width (W), rostral field length (L1) and caudal field length (L2) of the scales were taken using Image J software. The inter-specific variation among scales was indicated by L1/L, L2/L, L1/L2 and W/L indices through multiple comparison tests (ANOVA). It was found that all 17 species showed significant differences with at least one other species in all four indices.

Rizal & Amirrudin B.A* Pusat Pengajian Sains Marin dan Sekitaran, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, 21030 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Tasek Bera Ramsar Site is an alluvial swamp with small area of open water and is an im- portant and unique freshwater ecosystem in Peninsular Malaysia. Research on fish fauna of Tasek Bera began more than 60 years ago. A recent survey has collected a total of 52 species belonging to 20 families of freshwater fishes bringing the total number of fish species known to date to 127 species from 30 families. Thirteen species are newly recorded for the ecosystem, comprising of mainly small, cryptic and bottom dwelling species that can be found among riparian vegetation or root system of riparian plants. The remaining species are common and can be found widely distributed throughout Peninsular Malaysia. The ich- thyofaunas of Tasek Bera are dominated by Cyprinidae (51 species), Siluridae (12 species), followed by Bagridae (nine species) and Osphronemidae (nine species). The available data showed that fish diversity of Tasek Bera ecosystem is highly diverse. Future research needs to consider the peripheral habitat in order to obtain a complete picture of the ichthyofauna diversity of Tasek Bera Ramsar Site for sound conservation and management. These countries have a high diversity of freshwater fishes, especially described and undescribed species of Cypriniformes; together these species and other flora and fauna represent an extraordinary opportunity for worldwide collaboration to investigate the biodiversity, conservation, management and evolution of Borneo’s wildlife. Much of the fauna and flora of Borneo is under significant threat, warranting an immediate and swift international collaboration to rapidly inventory, describe, and conserve the diversity. The Sunda drainage appears to have been an important evolutionary centre for many fish groups, including cypriniforms (Cyprinidae, Balitoridae and Gyrinocheilidae); however, Northwestern Borneo (Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak) is not connected to Sundaland, and this disjunction likely explains the non-homogeneity of Bornean ichthyofauna. A previous study confirmed that northern Borneo, eastern Borneo and Sarawak shared a similar ichthyofauna, findings that support the general hypothesis for freshwater connections at one time between western Borneo and central Sumatra, and south Borneo and Java island.

In Southeast Asia, biodiversity-rich forests are being logged and converted to oil-palm monocultures. The impacts of land-use change on freshwater ecosystems and biodiversity, remains largely understudied and poorly understood. I investigated the impacts of logging and conversion of tropical forest in 35 streams across a land-use gradient on freshwater fishes, a useful biotic indicator group, and a vital provisioning ecosystem service. This research was extended to quantify the benefits of riparian reserves in disturbed landscapes, and examine the interaction of land-use change with extreme climatic events. There are four key findings from this research. (1) Any modification of primary rainforest is associated with a loss of fish species and functional richness. (2) Streams in oil-palm plantations with riparian reserves of high forest quality, and a width of > 64m on either side, retain higher species richness and higher abundances of individual fish species.

Minnows and molecules: resolving the broad and fine-scale evolutionary patterns of Cypriniformes by Carla Cristina Stout A dissertation submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Auburn University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Auburn, Alabama May 7, 2017 Keywords: fish, phylogenomics, population genetics, Leuciscidae, sequence capture Approved by Jonathan W. Armbruster, Chair, Professor of Biological Sciences and Curator of Fishes Jason E. Bond, Professor and Department Chair of Biological Sciences Scott R. Santos, Professor of Biological Sciences Eric Peatman, Associate Professor of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences Abstract Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world. Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. The goal of this dissertation is to provide robust support for relationships at various taxonomic levels within Cypriniformes. For the entire order, an anchored hybrid enrichment approach was used to resolve relationships. This resulted in a phylogeny that is largely congruent with previous multilocus phylogenies, but has much stronger support. For members of Leuciscidae, the relationships established using anchored hybrid enrichment were used to estimate divergence times in an attempt to make inferences about their biogeographic history. The predominant lineage of the leuciscids in North America were determined to have entered North America through Beringia ~37 million years ago while the ancestor of the Golden Shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) entered ~20–6 million years ago, likely from Europe. Within Leuciscidae, the shiner clade represents genera with much historical taxonomic turbidity. Targeted sequence capture was used to establish relationships in order to inform taxonomic revisions for the clade.
