Open Mind: the Best of Blackfield
Blackfield – Open Mind: The Best Of Blackfield (58:20, CD, Vinyl, Digital, KScope/Edel, 2018) An dieser Stelle soll nicht das Für und Wider von „Best Of“‘- Compilations diskutiert werden. Fakt ist, dass solche Releases eben nicht für den Fan gemacht sind, denn dieser hat sowieso schon alles von seinen angebeteten Stars, sondern für solche Klientel, denen die Hitvariante des jeweiligen Akteurs vollkommen ausreicht. Diese allerdings wirklich zum Kauf zu bewegen, ist in Zeiten von Spotify & Co. ein immer schwieriger werdendes Unterfangen. Nach fünf regulären Alben geht es aber schon okay, sich mit einer Werkschau zu präsentieren. Von Porcupine Tree-Fans wurde das Sideproject von Steven Wilson, das dieser seit 2001 mit dem israelischen Musiker Aviv Geffen betrieb, immer reichlich stiefmütterlich behandelt. Und dies, weil die Songs und die Musik an sich schon tendenziell unter Pop rangieren – Pop, mit dem für Wilson und Geffen so typisch-perfekten Songwriting wohlgemerkt. „Open Mind“ enthält dann auch eine respektable Auswahl aus den von 2004 bis 2017 veröffentlichten Originalalben, wobei gewichtungstechnisch vor allen das Debüt sowie das 2017er Werk „V“ mit jeweils vier Songs gesteigerte Berücksichtigung findet. Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra. -

August 2010 ist so ein Abend, ideal, um ihn beim WÜRZ- BURGER HAFENSOMMER mit dem PORTICO QUARTET zu genießen. Vier le- ger gekleidete Jungmänner entern die schwimmende Bühne hinter dem Heiz- kraftwerk und beginnen, die genial verhuschten Federwölkchen über uns abzu- malen. Duncan Bellamy an den Drums, Milo Fitzpatrick am Kontrabass, Nick Mul- vey klöppelt auf etwas, das sich Hang Drums nennt und aussieht wie drei Wok- pfannen und Jack Wyllie bläst abwechselnd Tenor- und Sopranosaxophon. Sie präsentieren ihr Isla-Programm und wenige Takte genügen, um auf den voll be- setzten Treppenstufen zu begreifen, warum die Londoner für den Mercury Prize 2008 nominiert waren, auf Peter Gabriels Label Real World publizieren und eu- ropaweit als Darlings herumgereicht werden. Der melodische Sound des Hang, einer Percussion-Novität von Panart in Bern, verbreitet mit repetitiven, harmoni- schen Mustern aus nur einer Handvoll Tönen die Wärme und den hypnotischen Sog von Trinidad-Steel-Drums, erinnert stellenweise an Harfenarpeggios, mit bloßen Händen gespielt auch an eine Mbira. Das Quartett lässt in seinen Mustern Debussy und Nyman mit Tortoise vexieren. Fitzpatrick zupft warme Bassriffs. Bellamy tickelt, tüpfelt und wischt dazu funkelnde und federleichte Beats. Und schon ist jeweils der schönste Groove beieinander, etwa bei ‚Dawn Patrol‘ mit seinem simplen Pizzikatodrive, in den Wyllie hell und sanglich betörend einfädelt. Der Clou sind jedoch klangliche Accessoires, die er mit Delay- und Loop-Effekten unterlegt, einfach das Klacken der Klappenmechanik, lang gezogene oder kas- kadierende Dauertöne, das Fiepen einer Melodica. -

The show, broadcast from The Fleece, was hosted by presenters Graeme Mac and Richard Haugh. The four piece band featuring Chris Athorne (Vocals & Lead Guitar), Lee Wilkins (Rhythm Guitar), Robert Lait (Bass) and Mark Willis Above: Finlay receiving his award from Robert Audley, Chairman of Prolog (Drums) also played a 45 minute set on the night which was recorded by (sponsors) and Jennie Jenkins, Chair of Babergh District Council. BBC engineers for broadcast on the show later this year. All band Finlays citation read:- members are resident in the village. FINLAY has worked tirelessly to restore the Village Hall for the benefit This Boy Wonders were joined on the night by Haverhill outfit, of the village. Over the years the Hall had deteriorated and Finlay was Umbrella Assassins, whose sound harked back to the thrash punk of the instrumental in getting it re-decorated in order to secure further 1980’s. bookings. His greatest achievement was over the past year where, The BBC show marked a high point for the Boxford band, who were supported by his committee, he led a costly project to construct a new formed at the end of 2008. Snowskin This has to be one of the single rarest Marcus Mixx records (Not) out there...it has only sold on discogs twice, ever! Well it's for good reason, I just picked this up and it's a BOMB..."It feels good" is a masterpiece along the lines of Tortured Journey and my favorite on the record, It has the classics like T.A.P and Psychousic but then has the lesser known "the love of my life" which is phenomenal as well...If this EVER comes up for sale BUY IT IMMEDIATELY, it will be worth every cent and in my estimation, pound-for-pound, is a RARER and quite possibly a slightly better record than Various-Vol. -
Auto Reconnaissance
The Tangent – Auto Reconnaissance (60:18, CD, LP+CD, Digital, InsideOut / Sony Music, 2020) Zufälligerweise drehte sich in letzter Zeit ein Großteil der Tangent Diskografie im heimischen CD Player. Befasst man sich so geballt und vor allem längere Zeit ausführlich mit der Band / dem Projekt von Andy Tillison, dann bleibt vor allem hängen, dass die musikalische Qualität über all die Jahre eigentlich immer stimmte. Klar gab es auch bei The Tangent ein paar Ausreißer, doch deren Retro Prog mit Canterbury Anleihen, dem immer andere Zutaten in moderaten Dosen beigemischt wurde, hat durchaus eine gewisse Eigenständigkeit und vor allem seine sofort erkennbare Eigenheiten bewahrt. Da bildet glücklicherweise „Auto Reconnaissance“ keine Ausnahme. Eingespielt vom einigermaßen konstanten Line-Up Andy Tillison – Gesang, Keyboards, Jonas Reingold – Bass, Theo Travis – Saxophon & Flöte, Luke Machin – Gitarre und Steve Roberts – Schlagzeug durchzieht das Album eine deutlichere Ausrichtung hin zum Jazz Rock, was sich bereits beim Vorgänger „Proxy“ erkennen ließ. Hinzu kommen als auflockernde Elemente stellenweise funkige Rhythmen, eine gewisse Laid-Back Atmosphäre mit luftigen Arrangements, wie auf der anderen Seite einige recht schräge Momente und eine gehörige Prise Humor ihren Platz finden. Vor allem die Abrechnung mit der englischen Brexit Politik, sowie einer gleichzeitigen Liebeserklärung an die englische Heimat im 28-minütigen „Lie Back & Think Of England“ offenbart das ganze musikalische Potenzial dieser englisch-schwedischen Zusammenarbeit. Während kürzere Titel wie die beiden vorab veröffentlichten ‚Life On Hold‘ oder ‚The Tower Of Babel‘ mit lässiger Up Tempo Rhythmik und direkter Musikalität sofort ins Ohr gehen, zünden die längeren Titel nicht unbedingt sofort. Gerade das über 15- minütige ‚Jinxed In Jersey‘, die vertonte, etwas andere Stadtbesichtigung von New York mit einigen hörspielartigen Sequenzen, weist doch gewisse Längen auf, steigert sich aber vor allem in den letzten 5 Minuten zu einer fulminanten Instrumentalorgie. -
