Open Mind: the Best of Blackfield
Blackfield – Open Mind: The Best Of Blackfield (58:20, CD, Vinyl, Digital, KScope/Edel, 2018) An dieser Stelle soll nicht das Für und Wider von „Best Of“‘- Compilations diskutiert werden. Fakt ist, dass solche Releases eben nicht für den Fan gemacht sind, denn dieser hat sowieso schon alles von seinen angebeteten Stars, sondern für solche Klientel, denen die Hitvariante des jeweiligen Akteurs vollkommen ausreicht. Diese allerdings wirklich zum Kauf zu bewegen, ist in Zeiten von Spotify & Co. ein immer schwieriger werdendes Unterfangen. Nach fünf regulären Alben geht es aber schon okay, sich mit einer Werkschau zu präsentieren. Von Porcupine Tree-Fans wurde das Sideproject von Steven Wilson, das dieser seit 2001 mit dem israelischen Musiker Aviv Geffen betrieb, immer reichlich stiefmütterlich behandelt. Und dies, weil die Songs und die Musik an sich schon tendenziell unter Pop rangieren – Pop, mit dem für Wilson und Geffen so typisch-perfekten Songwriting wohlgemerkt. „Open Mind“ enthält dann auch eine respektable Auswahl aus den von 2004 bis 2017 veröffentlichten Originalalben, wobei gewichtungstechnisch vor allen das Debüt sowie das 2017er Werk „V“ mit jeweils vier Songs gesteigerte Berücksichtigung findet. The Pineapple Thief – Versions Of The Truth (45:09, CD, Kscope/Edel, 2020) Crime doesn’t pay – im Falle des organisierten Ananas-Diebstahls kann das nicht so ganz stimmen. Auf den vermutlichen bisherigen Kreativ-Höhepunkt von The Pineapple Thief – Dissolution (2018; Album der Woche bei uns) – folgten erfolgreiche Touren und ein nicht überraschendes, aber vorzügliches weiteres Live- Album Hold Our Fire (2019). Und nun – Corona zum Trotz – hat die Band um Rädelsführer Bruce Soord schon wieder ein neues Ding gedreht, bei dem es um Variationen des seit Jahrhunderten faszinierenden Gedankenspiels „Wie wirklich ist die Wirklichkeit=“ – und vor allem „wessen Wirklichkeit?“ zu gehen scheint (vgl. „Alternative Facts“ bzw. „Fake News“ im Post-Truth-Zeitalter von Trump. Vgl. aber auch schon z.B. Kurosawas „Rashomon“ oder Paul Watzlawick). Inhaltlich ist das natürlich in keine dürre philosophische Disputation verpackt, sondern in teils sehr persönliche, brillant beobachtete, bedichtete und vertonte Kurz- und Kürzestgeschichten (‚Our Mire‘ gibt mit knapp 7:30 hier schon den Longtrack ab). Zum Titelstück verriet die Band übrigens selbst „The darkly anthemic title track opens the album and sows the seeds for what follows.
