  • Live Among the White Trash: a History of Nono----Manman on Stage
Live Among the White Trash: A history of nono----manman on stage “There are no No-Man concerts scheduled for the foreseeable future.” (from the official no-man website) Anyone who has followed no-man’s career over the previous ten years or so will be acutely aware that the band does not play live. If no-man “exist” as a band at all – and their infrequent releases mean they are more an ongoing understanding between two men rather than an active unit – it is only in the studio. Over a series of uncompromising albums no-man’s music has become ever more complex, yet ironically, “live sounding” than the release which proceeded it. But this organic “liveness” is mainly an illusion; the feeling of spontaneity often the result of numerous edits and takes which only the precision of studio work can produce. Others have tried to perform equally difficult music live: Radiohead ambitiously thrusting their clicks-and- cuts post-rock upon the world’s stadiums, for example. But for a variety of reasons, no-man simply haven’t tried – at least, not since 1994 and not until a one-off performance in 2006. The only comparable case is Talk Talk’s retreat into the studio in the late 1980s. Both bands have undoubtedly crafted their best work without going near an audience. 1 But it wasn’t always so. no-man were once very much a live act, promoting singles and albums with dates and undertaking two full-blown tours – though they rarely played outside London, never went further north than Newcastle, and never played outside Great Britain.

However, when accomplished musician and engineer Agapitus “Augi” Lye purchased a new cello, he lacked the time necessary to adequately play-in the instrument. Utilizing his knowledge of acoustical physics and leaning on his engineering background, Lye built a prototype that would become the ToneRite. Surprised by the tonal improvements that had occurred in Lye’s cello in such a short time his luthier, fellow musicians and professionals urged him to continue his research and it was from his exploration that ToneRite was born. Through their ambitious studies of acoustical physics, advanced signal processing, engineering, and practiced musicians, the ToneRite team have spent years perfecting the science of play-in.

  • Open Mind: the Best of Blackfield
Steven Wilson, 17.07.18, Bonn, Kunst! I see a lot of Pink –Nick (Beggs)‘ favourite colour!“). Live wirkten die Stücke des letzten Albums wesentlich besser und der Spannungsbogen des Konzerts war auch gut gewählt.

  • Varsity Jazz
Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra.

It is typically characterized by lengthy audio programs with relatively slight harmonic variations throughout each piece compared to other musics. La Monte Young, one of its 1960s originators, defined it in 2000 as "the sustained tone branch of minimalism".[4] Drone music[5][6] is also known as drone-based music,[7] drone ambient[8] or ambient drone,[9] dronescape[10] or the modern alias dronology,[11] and often simply as drone. • John Young, from Lifesigns. by Peter Brockwell
The New Roxette meets… John Young, from Lifesigns. By Peter Brockwell For those new to your music can you give us a brief history of John Young? How long have you got…? I guess the best place to check it all out is www.johnyoungband.com but in a nutshell I started back in 85 with Uli Jon Roth , then worked with Asia , Paul Rodgers , Roy Wood, Bonnie Tyler, Mammoth, Greenslade, John Wetton, Qango, Fish, The Scorpions, The Strawbs and Snakecharmer . During the last 12 years or so I started playing and singing solo and then formed the JYB in 2002 and now finally through to Lifesigns . As for your latest project Lifesigns let's start off with an easy question. Who are Lifesigns? John Young (keys, vocals), Nick Beggs (bass, chapman stick, vocals) Frosty Beedle (drums) and Steve Rispin (sound). Sound engineer Steve Rispin is the silent contributor of Lifesigns. What do you see as his biggest contribution to the music on Lifesigns? Steve is as much a part of Lifesigns as any of us. He was there from my earliest composition ready to listen and help transform it into the beast it has become. He’s on hand for both audio and musical ideas and without him this CD would never have seen the light of day. Lifesigns is a slight departure from your previous work with the John Young Band so how did it come around? Well two fold really. I remember I felt a little under-whelmed by the neo-prog scene and just thought there could be something new that harked back to the halcyon days of prog, but also at the same time something that could bring it into the now.

  • Dave Hartl's 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums
Dave Hartl’s 2017 Top Ten (Or So) Most Influential Albums It’s time once again to look back and do that annual tradition of picking out the 10 or so most influential albums I heard in the past year. Not the most popular, or even the best, but what made me think the most as a musician. You can always go to http://www.davehartl.com/top10.html and look at other years’ postings. The links there go all the way back to 1998, when I started this with George Tucker. It’s a way of hearing about great music you might otherwise miss. If you want to contribute, please write to [email protected] with your own list and your contribution will be added to this document online for future downloads. This is why I do this! It always gives me some great recommendations for what to listen to that would be off my radar otherwise. So don’t be shy! Last year, Brian Groder, Jack Loughhead, and Kaz Yoshihara gave me some great things to listen to. 1.) John McLaughlin & the 4th Dimension: Live at Ronnie Scott’s 2017 saw the farewell American tour of the great guitarist John McLaughlin, who joined up with fellow guitarist Jimmy Herring for an unbelievable 3-set night concluding with pieces from his old Mahavishnu Orchestra days (you can see an entire concert at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWa9F4UBQQ&t=19s, highly recommended!). This CD was recorded in London with McLaughlin’s working band of the last decade, the 4th Dimension, about 7 months ahead of the aforementioned American tour, but it shows a microcosm of that concept, opening with 1971’s Meeting of the Spirits and working through pieces showcasing the amazing drummer Ranjit Barot and his Indian classical influences, bassist Etienne M’Bappé’s multilevel constructions, and Gary Husband’s otherworldly synth textures, blowout chops, and energetic drumming.
