I J I ^ K / Lifelong Doctor \ Fan Mark Gatiss Delivers a Love Letter to A An Adventure in Space and Time Thursday 9.00pm BBC2 MgS**k MY FIRST MEMORY of Doctor Who I, (indeed almost my first memory of anything) is of shop-window dummies M coming to life in Jon Pertwee's very 1 first adventure in 1970. I was only four years old and instantly hooked on this strange, delightful, frightening show. (I also I couldn't go near March the Tailor without hiding behind my mam's legs.) ^k As my love for the programme developed, J I yearned to know more about its past. I inter rogated my family (they could do a mean imper sonation of the Fish People from The Underwater Menace, 1967) and my brother would speak / darkly of "the one with the Cybermen in the I sewers". But true enlightenment only arrived with the publication of Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke's book, The Making of Doctor Lifelong Doctor \ Who, a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of how the show was made, in which I discovered fan Mark Gatiss all sorts of new terms like producer, floor manager and script editor. Even better, it had a delivers a love photo of a Sea Devil on the cover! This was followed by the Radio Times Tenth letter to a great Anniversary Special: a sumptuous look back at ten years of Doctor Who, which included heart- British eccentric stoppingly thrilling black-and-white photos of a time when the Doctor had been someone else. From these publications I learnt the story of how my favourite show had begun. Of how something designed to fill a gap between the Saturday sports coverage and Juke Box Jury had become a national institution. Of how the first episode had gone out the day after JFK's assassination and a shocked nation hadn't paid it any attention. Of how no one in the production had actually liked the Daleks. Even though Jon Pertwee was my Doctor, I was always fascinated by this story, coming, as it seemed to me, from an almost impossibly distant past. A postwar world of smoggy Novembers, white macs and a BBC run by ex-wing commanders in neckerchiefs. About 13 years ago I first began to mull the idea of writing a drama based around these events. 1 even got so far as to propose it be made for Doctor Who's 40th anniver sary in 2003! But, of course, the series was off the air then and had been since 1989. There were no takers for my little idea. Ironically, it was later that same year that the show's return was announced and Russell T 1 4 Davies's spectacular reinvention went on to conquer the world (which is more than the DOCTOR Daleks, Cybermen or even the Nestene I Consciousness ever did). Now, having written ! for the show since its return, I once again proposed the idea of a drama telling the story RELATIVE DIMENSIONS of its genesis and this time met with a very In An Adventure in Space and Time, David Bradley plays the first Doctor and warm reception. Simon Stephens Plays: 2 One Minute, Country Music Motortown, Pornography, Sea Wall One Minute: ‘Set in London in the aftermath of the disappearance of an eleven-year-old girl, One Minute brings together the girl’s mother, an unreliable witness, a student/barmaid and two investigating officers . the writing cleverly suggests how much the characters would like to connect but never really can.’ Guardian Country Music ‘spotlights four fateful moments in the life of Jamie Carris, an engaging but violent south Londoner. The play unfolds in a series of tightly focused two-handers, set before, during and after the prison sentences he has served for glassing one man and for killing another.’ Independent Motortown: ‘Danny – a squaddie who has served in Basra – is bringing the war back home [to] an England where the “war on terror” has become a war waged using the tactics of the terrorists. It is also a place of dubious moralities, small-time arms dealers and middle-class swingers and anti-war protesters. A searingly honest play written with a deadly coiled energy.’ Guardian Pornography: ‘Set in July 2005, between the announcement that London had been awarded the Olympics and the July 7 bombings, it tells seven entwining stories, including the imagined story of one of the bombers journeying towards London to commit an act of terrorism.’ Guardian Sea Wall: ‘A quietly gripping monologue about grief and belief . this play is like a deceptive calm blue sea beneath which lurks a ferocious riptide of sorrow.’ Guardian Simon Stephens is a British writer whose theatrical career began in the literary department of the Royal Court Theatre where he ran its Young Writers’ Programme.

  • Well Basically He Wants to Write a Paper About How Well The
This Planet Has Four Walls: How early Doctor Who narrative was influenced by techniques and technology to overcome the confines of studio recording Andrew Ireland Subject Leader for Television Production, The Media School, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus, Poole, Dorset, BH12 5BB, UK [email protected] Abstract This Planet Has Four Walls: How early Doctor Who narrative was influenced by techniques and technology to overcome the confines of studio recording "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" (1965) marked a turning point in the series. Not only did it see the first change to the line-up of regular characters (Susan Foreman, played by Carole Ann Ford, left at the conclusion of the story) but it was the first to feature material filmed on location. Up until this point, all episodes had been filmed entirely within the confines of a studio. This paper will examine the relationships and effects between narratives, production techniques and technology in this studio- bound era; how the programme makers told stories that in terms of direction, reach, and geography, far outstripped the limiting four walls of the studio space. In addition, the paper will discuss how production techniques developed to allow creativity to flourish in order to escape the trappings of the studio. Techniques such as forced perspective, front and back projection, and lighting will be discussed, along with how they’ve been employed to assist the telling of the story in a number of Doctor Who episodes, including "An Unearthly Child", "The Daleks", "Marco Polo," and "The Keys of Marinus". The central question to be explored is the idea that there is an inverse relationship between television production technology, and the creativity and ambition of geography in the narratives.
