(1:15) starring DAVID BRADLEY, JESSICA RAINE, SACHA DHAWAN, LESLEY MANVILLE and BRIAN COX written by MARK GATISS executive producers MARK GATISS, STEVEN MOFFAT and CAROLINE SKINNER director TERRY MCDONOUGH producer MATT STREVENS music by EDMUND BUTT “As many of you reading this may know, ‘An Adventure in Space and Time’ has been the summation of a long-held dream of mine to tell the story of the birth-pangs of ‘Doctor Who’. I first began serious work on the project thirteen years ago when the hugely popular new incarnation of the show seemed an impossible dream. That ‘Doctor Who’ is now back where it belongs and celebrating its 50th anniversary in such style is a testament to the amazing men and women who set out to create a bit of tea-time telly and instead created magic. Making ‘Adventure’ was a wonderful experience. The whole team were absolutely dedicated to the project, going the extra mile (or parsec) to create that smoggy early 60s world where so much seemed (and was) suddenly possible. And none more so than Edmund Butt whose gorgeous score is one of the highlights of the film. The main theme was quite a puzzle for a while. I didn’t want it to be too ‘Doctor Who-y’ as this would send out the wrong message. Too sombre and it would start things out on too downbeat a note. I asked Ed to think about a waltz theme. Something slightly off-kilter which would give a hint of “the whirligig of time” - the frantic merry-go-round which picked up William Hartnell, span him on to dizzying success and promptly plonked him down again. It fits the film perfectly as does the rest of Ed’s score, by turns lyrical and jaunty and ultimately profoundly moving. I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response to the film. It was a very special project from the outset and I know Ed’s soundtrack will continue to thrill and delight for, well, the rest of space and time...” MARK GATISS London, December 2013 Music composed by Edmund Butt Score Producer - Edmund Butt Conductor & Orchestrator - Geoff Alexander Recording & Mixing Engineer - Toby Wood Assistant Engineer - Gordon Davidson Orchestral Contractor - Gareth Griffiths Recorded at Abbey Road Studios “Studio 1” London Performed by The Chamber Orchestra of London Edmund Butt wishes to thank Harriet Close for her love and support, plus special thanks to Terry Mcdonough, Mark Gatiss, Liz Pearson, Caroline Skinner, Jo Knight, Darrell Alexander, Chris Gutch, Phillip Kloss, Colette Barber, T-Lerone, Geoff Alexander, Adam Harvey, David Bradley, Matt Strevens and all the incredible musicians who performed on this soundtrack. Simon Stephens Plays: 2 One Minute, Country Music Motortown, Pornography, Sea Wall One Minute: ‘Set in London in the aftermath of the disappearance of an eleven-year-old girl, One Minute brings together the girl’s mother, an unreliable witness, a student/barmaid and two investigating officers . the writing cleverly suggests how much the characters would like to connect but never really can.’ Guardian Country Music ‘spotlights four fateful moments in the life of Jamie Carris, an engaging but violent south Londoner. The play unfolds in a series of tightly focused two-handers, set before, during and after the prison sentences he has served for glassing one man and for killing another.’ Independent Motortown: ‘Danny – a squaddie who has served in Basra – is bringing the war back home [to] an England where the “war on terror” has become a war waged using the tactics of the terrorists. It is also a place of dubious moralities, small-time arms dealers and middle-class swingers and anti-war protesters. A searingly honest play written with a deadly coiled energy.’ Guardian Pornography: ‘Set in July 2005, between the announcement that London had been awarded the Olympics and the July 7 bombings, it tells seven entwining stories, including the imagined story of one of the bombers journeying towards London to commit an act of terrorism.’ Guardian Sea Wall: ‘A quietly gripping monologue about grief and belief . this play is like a deceptive calm blue sea beneath which lurks a ferocious riptide of sorrow.’ Guardian Simon Stephens is a British writer whose theatrical career began in the literary department of the Royal Court Theatre where he ran its Young Writers’ Programme.

Press Contact: Harry Forbes 212.560.8027, [email protected] Lindsey Bernstein 212.560.6609, [email protected] Great Performances: The Hollow Crown Bios Tom Hiddleston After he was seen in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire by Lorraine Hamilton of the notable actors’ agency Hamilton Hodell, Tom Hiddleston was shortly thereafter given his first television role in Stephen Whittaker’s adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby (2001) for ITV, starring Charles Dance, James D’Arcy and Sophia Myles. Roles followed in two one-off television dramas co-produced by HBO and the BBC. The first was Conspiracy (2001), a film surrounding the story of the Wannsee Conference in 1942 to consolidate the decision to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The film prompted Tom’s first encounter with Kenneth Branagh who took the lead role of Heydrich. The second project came in 2002 in the critically acclaimed and Emmy Award- winning biopic of Winston Churchill The Gathering Storm, starring Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave. Tom played the role of Randolph Churchill, Winston’s son, and cites that particular experience – working alongside Finney and Redgrave, as well as Ronnie Barker, Tom Wilkinson, and Jim Broadbent – as extraordinary; one that changed his perspective on the art, craft and life of an actor. Tom graduated from RADA in 2005, and within a few weeks was cast as Oakley in the British independent film Unrelated by first-time director Joanna Hogg. Unrelated tells the story of a woman in her mid-40s who arrives alone at the Italian holiday home of an extended bourgeois family.

Mind Palace and Solution With the difficult second album/season/whatever there's always a balance between trying to keep the good things from before, and moving on. In this case each of the new episodes in season 2 of Sherlock was so strong, distinctive and dramatic, that the only thing to do was try to rise to that higher level. In A Scandal in Belgravia Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) meets the formidable Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), and we even hear him compose for the first time. His own tune for Irene becomes the DNA of the Woman theme that follows them throughout. The Hounds of Baskerville felt dark, menacing and hallucinatory. We distorted and manipulated the traditional orchestral sounds in the score and tried to create a sonic footprint for the Hound, or at least the perception of the Hound. And we hit lots of things very hard. For The Reichenbach Fall there was a tragic inevitability to Sherlock's confrontation with Moriarty (Andrew Scott), and real grief and despair in the final scenes. We wanted to find a way to weave Sherlock and Watson's themes together, and then follow Martin Freeman's astonishing performance through to the very end.
