For those wanting to join the dots, there's also an organization in this story that can pretty much be taken as a version of Torchwood 1, although it's not actually named as such which would be in keeping with the Big Finish licence, even though they produced this story for the BBC's audiobook line. I don't think this is a good place to start for the first Doctor or Doctor Who in general, not that I think it's trying to be that, I think it's best to acknowledge going in though that this is a celebration of 50 years of Doctor Who. Not only did it see the first change to the line-up of regular characters (Susan Foreman, played by Carole Ann Ford, left at the conclusion of the story) but it was the first to feature material filmed on location. Up until this point, all episodes had been filmed entirely within the confines of a studio. This paper will examine the relationships and effects between narratives, production techniques and technology in this studio- bound era; how the programme makers told stories that in terms of direction, reach, and geography, far outstripped the limiting four walls of the studio space. In addition, the paper will discuss how production techniques developed to allow creativity to flourish in order to escape the trappings of the studio. Techniques such as forced perspective, front and back projection, and lighting will be discussed, along with how they’ve been employed to assist the telling of the story in a number of Doctor Who episodes, including "An Unearthly Child", "The Daleks", "Marco Polo," and "The Keys of Marinus". The central question to be explored is the idea that there is an inverse relationship between television production technology, and the creativity and ambition of geography in the narratives.

I was only four years old and instantly hooked on this strange, delightful, frightening show. (I also I couldn't go near March the Tailor without hiding behind my mam's legs.) ^k As my love for the programme developed, J I yearned to know more about its past. I inter­ rogated my family (they could do a mean imper­ sonation of the Fish People from The Underwater Menace, 1967) and my brother would speak / darkly of "the one with the Cybermen in the I sewers". But true enlightenment only arrived with the publication of Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke's book, The Making of Doctor Lifelong Doctor \ Who, a fascinating behind-the-scenes account of how the show was made, in which I discovered fan Mark Gatiss all sorts of new terms like producer, floor manager and script editor. Even better, it had a delivers a love photo of a Sea Devil on the cover! This was followed by the Radio Times Tenth letter to a great Anniversary Special: a sumptuous look back at ten years of Doctor Who, which included heart- British eccentric stoppingly thrilling black-and-white photos of a time when the Doctor had been someone else. From these publications I learnt the story of how my favourite show had begun.

    Doctor Who: Adaptations and Flows Mark Bould Doctor Who (1963-1989, 2005-), the longest-running and most successful sf television show of all time (Miller), provides unique insights into how the experience of television programming has developed over the last half-century. Moreover, almost from the moment of its inception, it became a multimedia franchise, with comics, books, toys, games, a rebooted series, spin-off series, interactive web content and so on, as well as cinematic, direct-to-video, televisual, and internet/DVD pornographic film adaptations.1 Such a proliferation of commercial texts poses particular problems—and opportunities—for adaptation studies, which hitherto has tended to concentrate on the nature of textual transformations between more-or-less canonical texts and their adaptations—a close focus that typically loses sight of adaptations and their sources as commodities bound up in the realms of production and consumption. In order critically to comprehend them, it is necessary to come to terms with the nature of intellectual, creative labour required by both producers and consumers of textual commodities. That is, we need to develop the means by which to “examine the historically specific conjunctures in which interests and meanings are brought into being and actively negotiated” (Grainge 8). This requires attention not only to “the diversity of attitudes and practices that exist among consumers, audiences and subordinate social groups” privileged in cultural disciplines since the 1980s, but also “with equal sensitivity to context and complexity the interests and meanings worked out within the field of cultural production” (8). Thinking about adaptation therefore requires us simultaneously to consider not only the processes by which we make culture out of commodities but also those by which capital is made out of culture.
