Interesting this tale was read by the same actor that portrayed Susan Foreman. She pulls out her transistor radio and turns it on. The rest of the Mayfield Terrace was pulled down, as most of it had been destroyed in the war. New Vegas, 23rd Century — a sprawling city huddling beneath an artificial atmospheric bubble on a distant moon. I'm just not sure if this was good or bad; it was my first experience with the first Doctor and it just didn't move me. This one focused on Susan alot, which was interesting, and toyed with the idea of her having 'powers. Cedric tries to protest, proclaiming that as part of the message was meant for him, he should get an explanation. Early on, the sinister atmosphere of a foggy East End is skilfully evoked, but while the story touches on big issues such as fear of the Other, the treatment is rather shallow. Doctor Who: Hunters from Earth (Destiny of the Doctor 1) Writer A really nice set up for the series with a prequel to the first Doctor Who story ever, with some nice characterization for Susan, really making her a stronger character than she was in the series and using his telepathic skills to great effect. But I do like how all the plots DON't exactly fit together. Something is affecting the part of the brain that controls the tribal instinct and is taking it to extreme levels in a way that only affects younger people. Bernie gives the Doctor a card with the address of the warehouse where the parts will be and the Doctor leaves. The former is quite prickly and paranoid while Susan is worried about fitting in and making friends in her new school. Get A Copy. The soundscape is quite limited but atmospheric, managing to convey the action well, while I liked that the script is written in the third person, avoiding the need for a framing narrative and letting us get straight into the action.     This Planet Has Four Walls: How early Doctor Who narrative was influenced by techniques and technology to overcome the confines of studio recording Andrew Ireland Subject Leader for Television Production, The Media School, Bournemouth University, Talbot Campus, Poole, Dorset, BH12 5BB, UK [email protected] Abstract This Planet Has Four Walls: How early Doctor Who narrative was influenced by techniques and technology to overcome the confines of studio recording "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" (1965) marked a turning point in the series. Not only did it see the first change to the line-up of regular characters (Susan Foreman, played by Carole Ann Ford, left at the conclusion of the story) but it was the first to feature material filmed on location. Up until this point, all episodes had been filmed entirely within the confines of a studio. This paper will examine the relationships and effects between narratives, production techniques and technology in this studio- bound era; how the programme makers told stories that in terms of direction, reach, and geography, far outstripped the limiting four walls of the studio space. In addition, the paper will discuss how production techniques developed to allow creativity to flourish in order to escape the trappings of the studio. Techniques such as forced perspective, front and back projection, and lighting will be discussed, along with how they’ve been employed to assist the telling of the story in a number of Doctor Who episodes, including "An Unearthly Child", "The Daleks", "Marco Polo," and "The Keys of Marinus". The central question to be explored is the idea that there is an inverse relationship between television production technology, and the creativity and ambition of geography in the narratives.
