    27 Feature II Franz Eckert und „seine“ Nationalhymnen. Eine Einführung1 von Prof. Dr. Hermann Gottschewski und Prof. Dr. Kyungboon Lee Der preußische Militärmusiker Franz Eckert2, geboren 1852, wurde 1879 als Musiklehrer nach Japan berufen, wo er kurz vor seinem 27. Geburtstag eintraf. Er war dort bis 1899 in ver- schiedenen Positionen tätig, insbesondere als musikalischer Mentor der Marinekapelle. Für mehrere Jahre unterrichtete er auch an der To- yama Armeeschule, außerdem an der Musik- akademie Tokyo und nicht zuletzt an der Musi- kabteilung des Kaiserhofes. In die Zeit seines Wirkens in Japan fällt der Japanisch-Chinesi- sche Krieg, in dem die Militärmusik einen sehr großen Einfluss auf den öffentlichen Musikge- schmack gewann. Von der musikhistorischen Forschung wird dieser Einfluss als einer der wesentlichen Faktoren für die Durchsetzung der westlichen Musik in der modernen japani- schen Musikkultur gesehen. A problematic position As indicated by the title of the short story collection containing her debut work, Kaerenu Hitobito (“Those with Nowhere to Return”), author Sagisawa Megumu (1968 - 2004) began by writing about people deprived of a place to belong. In her sentime ntal hand, she continued to depict the pathos of those without a place to call their own, uprooted from the “family” they lived with, their comfortable “home,” their “work” which formed part of their identity, and their whole life and livelihood. After turning 20 years of age, Sagisawa found out that her grandmother on her fatherʼs side was in fact Korean, and began studying the Korean language. Around the same time, she wrote Hazakura no Hi (“The Day of the Green Leaf Cherry Blossom Trees,” Shinchō, August 1990), featuring a young man who grows up in a complicated and mysterious environment and continues to ask himself, “Who am I, really?” A work for which Sagisawa would be awarded her second Akutagawa Prize, which also saw her introduce “Zainichi” characters into her fiction. Though she continued to explore a new fictional world grown from this theme of questioning oneʼs identity, the “Zainichi” characteristics of the characters in her stories were for the most part kept at a distance under the idea of “place,” and they were by no means the main focus in her work.

Some Japanese apologists claim that through colonisation the colonised territories would have received developmental aid and economic benefits. This instantly raises some important questions in regard to music education in Korea. If the claim of colonial development were true, Korean primary music education could also have benefited from Japanese colonisation. The aim of this thesis is to examine the key characteristics of, and changes to, Korean music education under Japanese colonial rule. To analyse the effects of colonialism on Korean primary school music education, I have examined primary sources (music textbooks and education policy documents from that period) and scrutinised the intentions of colonial Korean music education through interviews with 42 eyewitnesses who attended primary school at the time, now aged between 75 and 90 years.
