Draft Concept Paper: World Heritage Site Manager Workshop, Denmark 21 24 April 2009 Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit The Heritage Agency of Denmark has generously decided to host a workshop on the Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit (EoH). Representatives from all the Nordic sites are invited to attend. Nordic World Heritage Foundation will in cooperation with the Danish authorities organize this workshop in April 2009. The workshop is a result of the recommendations from the Periodic Reporting process. 1. Background and objectives The European Periodic Report was submitted to the World Heritage Committee at its 30th meeting in Vilnius 2006. The Nordic Baltic sub-regional report, annexed to the regional report, identifies a number of challenges for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention in the sub-region. Periodic Reporting is widely recognised as an important tool to strengthen and maintain the integrity and credibility of the World Heritage concept. The Periodic Reporting process has so far been successful in developing international cooperation and in providing an account of the status of World Heritage sites. This workshop follows the recommendations from the meeting between the Nordic and Baltic States Parties in 2007 (see Annex I Recommendations from the meeting on Periodic Reporting, Helsinki 3-4 May 2007 no: 6, 7 & 12). The World Heritage Committee will examine the Periodic Reporting follow-up activities for the European region at its 34th session in 2010. The Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit contains twelve practical tools. Although it has been developed with a focus on natural properties, the initiative also has potential value as a tool to assist site managers of cultural properties.

  • West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord Norway
WEST NORWEGIAN FJORDS – GEIRANGERFJORD AND NÆRØYFJORD NORWAY The starkly dramatic Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord are classic examples of the upper sections of two of the world’s longest and deepest fjords. They are pristine well-developed examples of an active glacial landscape. Their sheer rock walls, hung with waterfalls and old transhumant farms rise 1,400m directly from sea level to a quite different landscape of glaciated mountains. COUNTRY Norway NAME West Norwegian Fjords – Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord NATURAL WORLD HERITAGE SERIAL SITE 2005: Inscribed on the World Heritage List under Natural Criteria vii and viii. STATEMENT OF OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE [pending] The UNESCO World Heritage Committee issued the following statement at the time of inscription: Justification for Inscription Criterion (viii): The West Norwegian Fjords are classic, superbly developed fjords, considered as the type locality for fjord landscapes in the world. They are comparable in scale and quality to other existing fjords on the World Heritage List and are distinguished by the climate and geological setting. The property displays a full range of the inner segments of two of the world’s longest and deepest fjords. Criterion (vii): The Nærøyfjord and Geirangerfjord areas are considered to be among the most scenically outstanding fjord areas on the planet. Their outstanding natural beauty is derived from their narrow and steep-sided crystalline rock walls that rise up to 1400m direct from the Norwegian Sea and extend 500m low sea level. Along the sheer walls of the fjords are numerous waterfalls while free-flowing rivers rise up through deciduous and coniferous forest to glacial lakes, glaciers and rugged mountains.

The fjord is one of Norway’s most visited tourist sites. This fjord is surrounded by some of the steepest moun- tains on the entire west coast. It is very narrow and has no habitable shore area. Foaming waterfalls plunge into the fjord from jagged peaks. The two most notable waterfalls in the Geiranger Fjord are Seven Sisters Falls and the Suitor. Both falls face one another across the fjord, and the Suitor is said to be trying to woo the sisters opposite. GeirangerFjord is under constant threat of erosion into the fjord from Åkerneset. The fortification Kristiansten was built after the large city fire in the year 1681 above the city and has been a museum since 1997. The recording of the fortress took place in each case at the end of August/at the beginning of September 2010 and 2011 during two two-week summer schools with the topic “Digital Photogrammetry & Terrestrial Laser Scanning for Cultural Heritage Documentation” at NTNU Trondheim with international students in the context of ERASMUS teaching programs. For data acquisition, a terrestrial laser scanner and digital SLR cameras were used. The establishment of a geodetic 3D network, which was later transformed into the Norwegian UTM coordinate system using control points, ensured a consistent registration of the scans and an orientation of the photogrammetric images.

LAURIE MERCIER, Ph.D., Chair ROBERT BAUMAN, Ph.D. JEFFREY SANDERS, Ph.D. LUZ MARIA GORDILLO, Ph.D. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation has been many years in the making. It all began in 2004 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Chandra Manning, Gina Hames, Carlton Benson, and Beth Kraig instilled in me a desire to pursue history as a profession. I completed a second major in history during the course of one academic year, and I do not believe I could have done it that quickly without the encouragement of Chuck Nelson and David Gerry at the Office of International Student Services. Important during my time at PLU was also the support of Helen Rogers, a close friend and an experienced history major. While my interest in Norwegian Americans’ relationship with Norway and Norwegian culture began during my time at PLU, it was during my years pursuing a Master’s degree at Montana State University in Bozeman that this project began to take shape.
