It is a pleasant and harmless pastime to give way to our ex pansive emotions by times and express a little pride about some personal achievement We may have broken a record of some sort; we may have been busier than we imagine any ordinary person could ever have been; we may have with the ancient saint given a dragon a hard time of it; we may have managed something which many before us had tried and failed; we may have bought a wieker chair at a price-con siderably lower than that paid by a very astute friend or neighbor. If we can get an audience, we are justified, or at least we can do little harm, if we add a little color, and pre sent our feat in all its glorious details. You may Boast about your Family. We should feel freer than we do to boast about our families. If a forefather fought with Wellington or Grant; if a son or daughter has seemed to have made the first rung on the ladder up to distinction; if our family includes one or moi'e members, (dis tant relatives may be included) who have their names inscribed in the halls of fame, we do no harm to let it be known. If, as is the case with the writer, our great grandl ather, with no weapon but a hoe, killed a large bear, we should not hide the fact. Of course, we must be careful. Human nature has a tendency to jealousy, and the bright branches of our family tree may stir others to envy and dislike us . This ean be avoided, however, if we adopt a casual attitude or) the subject, and let the glory of our Icinsfolk as it were seem to leak out. But do Not Boast of the Larger Groups to which you belong.

Music-Based TV Talent Shows in China: Celebrity and Meritocracy in the Post-Reform Society by Wei Huang B. A., Huaqiao University, 2013 Extended Essays Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the School of Communication (Dual Degree in Global Communication) Faculty of Communication, Art & Technology © Wei Huang 2015 SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY Summer 2015 Approval Name: Wei Huang Degree: Master of Arts (Communication) Title: Music-Based TV Talent Shows in China: Celebrity and Meritocracy in the Post-Reform Society Examining Committee: Program Director: Yuezhi Zhao Professor Frederik Lesage Senior Supervisor Assistant Professor School of Communication Simon Fraser University Baohua Wang Supervisor Professor School of Communication Communication University of China Date Defended/Approved: August 31, 2015 ii Abstract Meritocracy refers to the idea that whatever our social position at birth, society should offer the means for those with the right “talent” to “rise to top.” In context of celebrity culture, it could refer to the idea that society should allow all of us to have an equal chance to become celebrities. This article argues that as a result of globalization and consumerism in the post-reform market economy, the genre of music-based TV talent shows has become one of the most popular TV genres in China and has at the same time become a vehicle of a neoliberal meritocratic ideology. The rise of the ideology of meritocracy accompanied the pace of market reform in post-1980s China and is influenced by the loss of social safety nets during China’s transition from a socialist to a market economy.

  • Press Release
Press Release China’s hit reality show ‘Sing My Song’ back at The Venetian Macao Singer-songwriters from season 1 and 2 and celebrity mentors took to the stage of the Cotai Arena (Macao, March 19, 2015) – With The Venetian® Macao as the main sponsor, smash hit reality TV talent show “Sing My Song” returned to The Venetian® Macao’s Cotai Arena Thursday night to film "SONGS OF SPRING" 2015 SING MY SONG WORLD TOUR – MACAO. The concert which featured 16 contestants and two celebrity mentors will be broadcast on CCTV-3. The Macao concert is also the opening show of Sing My Song World Tour in 2015. Produced by Star China International Media Co. Ltd. and Starry Productions, “Sing My Song” has somewhat reinvented the musical reality genre by requiring contestants to perform their own compositions rather than covering other artists’ songs. The celebrity mentors on the night were renowned singer-song writer Tanya Chua and accomplished singer Emil Chow. The duo took the stage with the top 16 singer-songwriters from the studio-based talent show to perform some of their original songs as well as cover versions of some classic tunes such as “Missing is a kind of disease” and “Red high heel.” The very vocal crowd was absolutely thrilled by the wonderful performance. This reality TV series has revitalized the Chinese music industry and brought together the most talented singer-songwriters from China and abroad, including Singapore and the United States. The singer-songwriters who appeared as part of Sing My Song 2015 Macao Concert were all contestants from season 1 and 2 of the show.

Are You a Good Chinese Musician? The Ritual Transmission of Social Norms in a Chinese Reality Music Talent Show Miaowen Zhou Master’s Thesis in East Asian Culture and History (EAST4591 - 60 Credits) Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2015 © Miaowen Zhou 2015 Are You a Good Chinese Musician? The Ritual Transmission of Social Norms of a Chinese Reality Music Talent Show http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo II Abstract The sensational success of a Chinese reality music talent show, Super Girls’ Voice (SGV), in 2005 not only crowned many unknown Chinese girls/women with the hail of celebrity overnight, but also caused hot debates on many subjects including whether the show triggered cultural, even political democracy in China. 10 years have passed and China is in another heyday of reality music talent shows. However, the picture differs from before. For instance, not everybody can take part in it anymore. And the state television China Central Television (CCTV) joined the competition for market share. It actually became a competitive player of “reality” by claiming to find the best original and creative Chinese musicians whose voices CCTV previously avoided or oppressed. In this thesis, I will examine one CCTV show, The Song of China (SOC), in order to examine what the norms of good Chinese music and musicians are in the context of reality music talent shows. My work will hopefully give you some insights into the characteristics and the wider social and political influences of such reality music talent shows in the post-SGV era.

  • The Voice of China: Interactive Television and Participatory Audiences in Mainland China
The Voice of China: Interactive Television and Participatory Audiences in Mainland China Xin Yao Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies March 2017 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived there from, may be published without the author’s prior, written consent. Abstract In 2012, the most popular reality TV show in China was The Voice of China (TVoC). It is an adaptation of The Voice of Holland, the format of which has been traded to many countries. Unlike its international versions, audiences cannot vote in TVoC due to government regulations. This research focuses on audience engagement with TVoC (2012), in light of this crucial difference. To investigate how audiences engage and make meanings with the show, this thesis is the first study approaches audience engagement in China by examining the tensions between government media policies, industry strategies and audience reception. Building on existing literature on media convergence and participatory culture in the West, this thesis argues that Internet technologies alongside social media enable and stimulate individual critical thinking and creativities which resist structural constraints such as censorship and commercialisation. Although direct online political participation is censored in China, audiences express and negotiate power as ways to construct political values. These online engagements bring new perspectives to understand participatory culture and ‘empowerment’ of audiences. Using political economy frameworks, this thesis highlights the power of government media policies in shaping TV industry and media content.

  • The Beauty of the West," a Minnesota Ballad [By] Bessie M. Stanchfield
MINNESOTA HISTORY VOLUME 27 • PUBLISHED IN SEPT. I946 • NUMBER 3 "The Beauty of the West" A Minnesota Ballad Bessie M. Stanchfield I FIRST HEARD "The Bcauty of the West," a ballad of the Minnesota frontier, in St. Cloud in the spring of 1936. Upon finding it, I began a merry chase for Minnesota songs and information about them, since this song, and others coUected later, made me realize the faUacy of the belief that there is no Minnesota folk music. The long hunt for songs that followed my discovery of "The Beauty of the West" has been both happy and fruitful, and it has uncovered many sources for Minnesota folk music that are worth investigation. The song expresses the loyalty of the pioneer Minnesotans for their new home; indeed it reflects the kind of devotion expressed by a visitor from the East who said of Minnesota: "All you there behold serves only to make you love it more, and long to say, 'It is my home.'" ^ Since the song describes a trek of the pioneer from Ohio to Minnesota, it has a place in the story of the westward movement. My search for data on and variants of this ballad revealed that it underwent vast changes as it was sung in different countries and states. This fact and the difiiculties encountered when I attempted definitely to trace its origin and locate the place where it might last have been sung made me appreciate the truth of the statement that "Folk songs have no beginning and no end. They reflect, in a meas ure, the inherent character of a race.
