And both shall row, my love and I. Bring it in a bucket, Sylvie, bring it in a bucket now; A ship there is, and she sails the seas, Bring it in a bucket, Sylvie, every little once in a while. She’s loaded deep, as deep can be, But not as deep as the love I’m in; Don’t you see me comin’? Don’t you see me now? I know not if I sink or swim. Don’t you see me comin’ every little once in a while. I leaned my back against an oak, Gettin’ mighty thirsty Sylvie, getting’ mighty thirsty now; Thinking it was a trusty tree, Gettin’ mighty thirsty, Sylvie, every little once in a while. But first it bent, and then it broke, Just as my love proved false to me. Sylvie come a-runnin, Sylvie come right now; Sylvie come a-runnin’ every little once in a while. O love is handsome and love is kind, {Repeat verse 1} Gay as a jewel when first it’s new – But love grows old and waxes cold And fades away like the morning dew. 8) SWIMMING SONG (L. Wainright III) 6) DOWN TO THE RIVER TO PRAY This summer I went swimming, This summer I might have drowned As I went down in the river to pray, But I held my breath and I kicked my feet Studyin’ about that good ‘ol way And I moved my arms around, moved my arms around. And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord, show me the way. This summer I swam in the ocean And swam in a swimming pool O, sisters let’s go down Salt my wounds, chlorine my eyes Let’s go down, come on down. I’m a self- destructive fool, self- destructive fool. O sisters, let’s go down Down in the river to pray. This summer I did the backstroke And you know that that’s not all. O brothers…O fathers…O mothers…O sinners I did the breaststroke and the butterfly and the old Australian crawl, the old Australian crawl. This summer I swam in a public place And a reservoir to boot. At the latter I was informal, At the former I wore my suit, I wore my swimmin’ suit. This summer I did swan dives And jackknifes for you all And once when you weren’t looking I did a cannonball, did a cannonball. {Repeat verse 1} 9) ROLL THE OLD CHARIOT 11) SWING DOWN CHARIOT (Traditional) (African American Spiritual/Traditional Chantey) Chorus: We'd be alright if the wind was in our sails, Why don't you swing down, chariot, stop and let me ride? 'Cause when life looks like Easy Street, there is danger at Would you hold it near, as it were your own? your door. • A History of Tennessee
SECTION VI State of Tennessee A History of Tennessee The Land and Native People Tennessee’s great diversity in land, climate, rivers, and plant and animal life is mirrored by a rich and colorful past. Until the last 200 years of the approximately 12,000 years that this country has been inhabited, the story of Tennessee is the story of its native peoples. The fact that Tennessee and many of the places in it still carry Indian names serves as a lasting reminder of the significance of its native inhabitants. Since much of Tennessee’s appeal for settlers lay with the richness and beauty of the land, it seems fitting to begin by considering some of the state’s generous natural gifts. Tennessee divides naturally into three “grand divisions”—upland, often mountainous, East Tennessee; Middle Tennessee, with its foothills and basin; and the low plain of West Tennessee. Travelers coming to the state from the east encounter first the lofty Unaka and Smoky Mountains, flanked on their western slope by the Great Valley of East Tennessee. Moving across the Valley floor, they next face the Cumberland Plateau, which historically attracted little settlement and presented a barrier to westward migration. West of the Plateau, one descends into the Central Basin of Middle Tennessee—a rolling, fertile countryside that drew hunters and settlers alike. The Central Basin is surrounded on all sides by the Highland Rim, the western ridge of which drops into the Tennessee River Valley. Across the river begin the low hills and alluvial plain of West Tennessee. These geographical “grand divisions” correspond to the distinctive political and economic cultures of the state’s three regions.

The State of State History in Tennessee in 2008 The Underground Railroad in Tennesseee to 1865 A Report By State Historian Walter T. Durham The State of State History in Tennessee in 2008 The Underground Railroad in Tennessee to 1865 A Report by State Historian Walter T. Durham Tennessee State Library and Archives Department of State Nashville, Tennessee 37243 Jeanne D. Sugg State Librarian and Archivist Department of State, Authorization No. 305294, 2000 copies November 2008. This public document was promulgated at a cost of $1.77 per copy. Preface and Acknowledgments In 2004 and again in 2006, I published studies called The State of State History in Tennessee. The works surveyed the organizations and activities that preserve and interpret Tennessee history and bring it to a diverse public. This year I deviate by making a study of the Under- ground Railroad in Tennessee and bringing it into the State of State History series. No prior statewide study of this re- markable phenomenon has been produced, a situation now remedied. During the early nineteenth century, the number of slaves escaping the South to fi nd freedom in the northern states slowly increased. The escape methodologies and ex- perience, repeated over and over again, became known as the Underground Railroad. In the period immediately after the Civil War a plethora of books and articles appeared dealing with the Underground Railroad. Largely written by or for white men, the accounts contained recollections of the roles they played in assisting slaves make their escapes. There was understandable exag- geration because most of them had been prewar abolitionists who wanted it known that they had contributed much to the successful fl ights of a number of slaves, oft times at great danger to themselves.

  • African-American Bassoonists and Their Representation Within the Classical Music Environment
African-American Bassoonists and Their Representation within the Classical Music Environment D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ian Anthony Bell, M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Karen Pierson, Advisor Doctor Arved Ashby Professor Katherine Borst Jones Doctor Russel Mikkelson Copyrighted by Ian Anthony Bell 2019 Abstract This paper is the culmination of a research study to gauge the representation of professional African-American orchestral bassoonists. Are they adequately represented? If they are not adequately represented, what is the cause? Within a determined set of parameters, prominent orchestras and opera companies were examined. Of the 342 orchestral and opera companies studied, there are 684 positions for bassoonists. Sixteen of these jobs are currently held by African-Americans. Some of these musicians hold positions in more than one organization reducing the study to twelve black bassoonists. Translated to a percentage, .022% of the professional bassoonists within these groups are African-American, leading the author to believe that the African-American bassoon community is underrepresented in American orchestras and opera companies. This study also contains a biography of each of the twelve bassoonists. In addition, four interviews and five questionnaires were completed by prominent African- American bassoonists. Commonalities were identified, within their lives and backgrounds, illuminating some of the reasons for their success. Interview participants included Rufus Olivier Jr. (San Francisco Opera), Joshua Hood (Charlotte Symphony Orchestra), Monica Ellis (Imani Winds), Alexander Davis (fellowship recipient), and Andrew Brady (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra).

  • 1 the Words December 2007 Over the Last 15 Years Or So I Have Been
Songbook version January 2008 The Words December 2007 Over the last 15 years or so I have been collecting lyrics to songs - mostly old-time country, bluegrass, cowboy, and old blues songs. I wanted to consolidate these lyrics into one big searchable file that I could use as a reference. I started with the Carter Family, Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe, and Uncle Dave Macon sections, which I had in separate documents, previously downloaded from the web over the last few years. I can’t remember where I got the Carter Family or Uncle Dave songs, but the rest were mostly from Bluegrasslyrics.com. I had the rest of the songs in a huge binder. Excluding those that were already in the existing sections, I searched the web for lyrics that were close to the version I had. Other useful websites: www.mudcat.org www.traditionalmusic.co.uk http://mywebpages.comcast.net/barb923/lyrics/i_C.htm www.cowboylyrics.com http://prewarblues.org/ (not so many lyrics, but a cool site) There is a rough Table of Contents at the start of the document, and a detailed Index at the end. I’d recommend using the Index if you are looking for something in particular, or use your search tool. (There is no reason why some of the song titles are in CAPS but they are mostly Carter Family songs). I haven’t been able to read every song, so there may be lyrics that are insensitive, especially in the Uncle Dave Macon section. I’m sorry if I missed them.
