The 12- year-old actor has also been recognized internationally for his singing abilities, winning the Promising Voice Student Award at the 2009 Kiwanis International Music Festival. In 2005, Ludwig co-starred as Young Scrooge in the TV movie “Chasing Christmas,” starring Tom Arnold. The young star also has a purple belt in Tae Kwan Do. ### EMILY TENNANT (Older Sarah) – Even before attending Delta Secondary School in British Columbia, Canada, and landing lead roles in two of the school’s productions, it was obvious that Vancouver native Emily Tennant was meant for the stage and screen. In 2000, she made her debut as a lead in the CBS TV movie “Personally Yours,” and soon landed a number of other roles, including an appearance in an episode of the Golden Globe nominated “Dark Angel,” and a recurring role on Stephen King’s drama series, “Kingdom Hospital.” She starred alongside C. (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL / ‘CHRISTMAS IN CANAAN’ – Cast Bios – Page 4 This year, Tennant had a lead role in “Zombie Punch” and a part in “Frankie & Alice,” alongside Halle Berry. The well-established young star will next play Amy Walker in “Flicka 2,” the sequel to the 2006 hit which starred Tim McGraw. ### JESSICA MCLEOD (Young Sarah) – Jessica McLeod’s first claim to fame was not acting, but swimming. McLeod is a Provincial Open Water Medalist, having swum competitively for six years, and in 2006, she was one of only two girls under 10 to qualify for the Provincial AAA Championships in British Columbia. The young athlete is also an active dancer and gymnast, as well as a trained singer. Not one to sit on the sidelines, McLeod is also furthering her acting career, performing with the improv group Spilt Milk Comedy Theatre and training at the Screen Actor’s Studio. She appeared in the 2005 feature “Fetching Cody,” starring Jay Baruchel, alongside Anna Faris in “Scary Movie 4” and “Things We Lost in the Fire,” starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro. McLeod also starred in the TV movie “Tornado Valley” and in Warner Brothers’ comedy feature “Mr. Troop Mom,” starring George Lopez. McCleod lives in Victoria, British Columbia with her mother and two cats, Cherry and Welli. # # # TOM HEATON (Wylie) – Perhaps best known for his lead role in the 2000 heist film “Reindeer Games,” starring alongside Ben Affleck, Tom Heaton has been in the entertainment industry for more than four decades.

  • A History of Tennessee
SECTION VI State of Tennessee A History of Tennessee The Land and Native People Tennessee’s great diversity in land, climate, rivers, and plant and animal life is mirrored by a rich and colorful past. Until the last 200 years of the approximately 12,000 years that this country has been inhabited, the story of Tennessee is the story of its native peoples. The fact that Tennessee and many of the places in it still carry Indian names serves as a lasting reminder of the significance of its native inhabitants. Since much of Tennessee’s appeal for settlers lay with the richness and beauty of the land, it seems fitting to begin by considering some of the state’s generous natural gifts. Tennessee divides naturally into three “grand divisions”—upland, often mountainous, East Tennessee; Middle Tennessee, with its foothills and basin; and the low plain of West Tennessee. Travelers coming to the state from the east encounter first the lofty Unaka and Smoky Mountains, flanked on their western slope by the Great Valley of East Tennessee. Moving across the Valley floor, they next face the Cumberland Plateau, which historically attracted little settlement and presented a barrier to westward migration. West of the Plateau, one descends into the Central Basin of Middle Tennessee—a rolling, fertile countryside that drew hunters and settlers alike. The Central Basin is surrounded on all sides by the Highland Rim, the western ridge of which drops into the Tennessee River Valley. Across the river begin the low hills and alluvial plain of West Tennessee. These geographical “grand divisions” correspond to the distinctive political and economic cultures of the state’s three regions.

The State of State History in Tennessee in 2008 The Underground Railroad in Tennesseee to 1865 A Report By State Historian Walter T. Durham The State of State History in Tennessee in 2008 The Underground Railroad in Tennessee to 1865 A Report by State Historian Walter T. Durham Tennessee State Library and Archives Department of State Nashville, Tennessee 37243 Jeanne D. Sugg State Librarian and Archivist Department of State, Authorization No. 305294, 2000 copies November 2008. This public document was promulgated at a cost of $1.77 per copy. Preface and Acknowledgments In 2004 and again in 2006, I published studies called The State of State History in Tennessee. The works surveyed the organizations and activities that preserve and interpret Tennessee history and bring it to a diverse public. This year I deviate by making a study of the Under- ground Railroad in Tennessee and bringing it into the State of State History series. No prior statewide study of this re- markable phenomenon has been produced, a situation now remedied. During the early nineteenth century, the number of slaves escaping the South to fi nd freedom in the northern states slowly increased. The escape methodologies and ex- perience, repeated over and over again, became known as the Underground Railroad. In the period immediately after the Civil War a plethora of books and articles appeared dealing with the Underground Railroad. Largely written by or for white men, the accounts contained recollections of the roles they played in assisting slaves make their escapes. There was understandable exag- geration because most of them had been prewar abolitionists who wanted it known that they had contributed much to the successful fl ights of a number of slaves, oft times at great danger to themselves.

  • African-American Bassoonists and Their Representation Within the Classical Music Environment
African-American Bassoonists and Their Representation within the Classical Music Environment D.M.A. Document Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Musical Arts in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Ian Anthony Bell, M.M. Graduate Program in Music The Ohio State University 2019 D.M.A. Document Committee: Professor Karen Pierson, Advisor Doctor Arved Ashby Professor Katherine Borst Jones Doctor Russel Mikkelson Copyrighted by Ian Anthony Bell 2019 Abstract This paper is the culmination of a research study to gauge the representation of professional African-American orchestral bassoonists. Are they adequately represented? If they are not adequately represented, what is the cause? Within a determined set of parameters, prominent orchestras and opera companies were examined. Of the 342 orchestral and opera companies studied, there are 684 positions for bassoonists. Sixteen of these jobs are currently held by African-Americans. Some of these musicians hold positions in more than one organization reducing the study to twelve black bassoonists. Translated to a percentage, .022% of the professional bassoonists within these groups are African-American, leading the author to believe that the African-American bassoon community is underrepresented in American orchestras and opera companies. This study also contains a biography of each of the twelve bassoonists. In addition, four interviews and five questionnaires were completed by prominent African- American bassoonists. Commonalities were identified, within their lives and backgrounds, illuminating some of the reasons for their success. Interview participants included Rufus Olivier Jr. (San Francisco Opera), Joshua Hood (Charlotte Symphony Orchestra), Monica Ellis (Imani Winds), Alexander Davis (fellowship recipient), and Andrew Brady (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra).

FROM MEMORY TO HONOR: STORIES OF SOUTH CAROLINA'S WORLD WAR MONUMENTS A Thesis Presented to the Graduate School of Clemson University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts History by Amy Michelle Matthews August 2008 Accepted by: Dr. Steven G. Marks, Committee Chair Dr. Paul C. Anderson Dr. Richard Saunders, Jr. ABSTRACT Out of the South‟s defeat in the Civil War emerged proponents of the Lost Cause and a desire to remember and perpetuate the South‟s honor in the war. This desire to commemorate fallen loved ones and to preserve their memory continued into the twentieth century, most notably the era following the First and Second World Wars. Based on the South‟s strong sense of military tradition and remembrance established after the Civil War, a scholarly debate has emerged in recent decades over the meaning of military commemorations and monuments. One side of the argument views World War I commemorations as a continuation of traditional ways of understanding war and remembering the fallen.

  • 'Dolly Celebrates 25 Years of Dollywood' Talent Bios
‘DOLLY CELEBRATES 25 YEARS OF DOLLYWOOD’ TALENT BIOS DOLLY PARTON - "I've always been a writer. My songs are the door to every dream I've ever had and every success I've ever achieved," says Dolly Parton of her incredible career, which has spanned nearly five decades and is showing no signs of slowing down. An internationally renowned superstar, the iconic and irrepressible Parton has contributed countless treasures to the world of music entertainment, penning classic songs such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and her mega-hit "I Will Always Love You." With 1977's crossover hit "Here You Come Again," she successfully erased the line between country and pop music without noticeably altering either her music or her image. "I'm not leaving country," she said at the time, "I'm just taking it with me." Making her film debut in the 1980 hit comedy “9 to 5,” Parton earned rave reviews for her performance and an Oscar nomination for writing the title tune, along with her second and third Grammy Awards. Roles in “Steel Magnolias,” “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” “Rhinestone,” and “Straight Talk” followed, along with two network television series, made for television movies, network and HBO specials, and guest-starring roles in series television. In 2006, Parton earned her second Oscar nomination for "Travelin' Thru," which she wrote for the film “Transamerica.” Dolly Parton's remarkable life began very humbly. Born January 19, 1946 on a farm in Sevier County, Tennessee, Parton is the fourth of twelve children. Her parents, Robert Lee and Avie Lee Parton struggled to make ends meet in the impoverished East Tennessee hills.
