    ABSTRACT Contemporary expressions of Judeophobia—in Germany, as elsewhere in Europe—contain a potentially explosive mix of traditional and newer forms of antisemitism. Since 9/11, and especially in the wake of the Iraq war, anti-Americanism has been a potent factor in envenoming hostile attitudes to Israel and the Jews—as alleged architects of the war, and “aggressors” in the Middle East. Conspiracy theories, with an antisemitic subtext, have flourished on the Left and in the mainstream media, as well as on the far Right. One-sided representations of the Middle East conflict, downplaying Palestinian terrorism, the threat posed by radical Islam and the genocidal antisemitism rampant in the Muslim and Arab media—while highlighting Israeli counter-violence as gratuitous sadism—have contributed to fostering anti-Jewish feelings. “Anti- Sharonism” has been widely used as a cover to present Israel as a “criminal” state in its essence. Such commentaries reinforce long-standing and widespread anti- Jewish stereotypes, revealed by surveys of German public opinion over the years—especially those related to Jewish money, power, and exploitative “abuse” of the Holocaust. Much of contemporary German antisemitism can best be understood as a form of ressentiment against constant reminders of the Nazi past and the desire to reverse the roles, to turn Israelis/Jews into “perpetrators” and Germans into “victims.” The new Judeophobia in contemporary Germany is a mutation of earlier varieties of antisemitism. It is a politics of ressentiment whose most novel feature is the convergence between anti-Americanism and Jew-hatred, pacifism, right-wing radicalism, and militant Islam, along with a special focus on the evils of Zionist Israel.

    Central and Eastern Europe Germany National Affairs Since 2005 Germany had been governed by a center-right coalition pairing Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) with Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's Social Democrats (SPD). Merkel's international standing enjoyed a boost in 2007 due in part to her presidency of the 27-member European Union from January to June and of the G-8 industrialized nations throughout the year. On the domestic front, an improving economy and falling un- employment helped win popular support for the government. In May, in her role as EU president, Merkel cohosted an interreligious conference in Brussels. Afterwards, she said she no longer planned to in- clude a reference to "Christian values" in a new draft of the proposed Eu- ropean constitution, due to objections from Muslims and Jews. Germany maintained and extended its presence in northern Afghanistan in 2007, despite popular opposition. About 3,200 German troops and six Tornado reconnaissance jets with up to 500 soldiers were part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. In Octo- ber, the Bundestag approved a one-year extension, with only the Left Party opposed. The next month the Bundestag also approved another year of support for Operation Enduring Freedom, which deployed up to 1,400 German troops in the Horn of Africa and up to 100 special-force personnel in Afghanistan. A number of tragic incidents fueled public criticism of such commit- ments. Three German soldiers were killed in May in a suicide bombing. In July, a Taliban group kidnapped two German engineers.

For this examination we will use the example of political speeches and their representation in the news of the online news journals New York Times and Spiegel Online. One of the most significant current discussions in mass media and communication studies circulates around the question of the representation of news and their presentation within the framework of specific media. This is also the cutting edge for communication studies asking the question of the conditions of discourses in the mass media. Both perspectives are in this study considered as tools for the access to the discursive communicative patterns in mass media. We will examine in examples the text structures of political speeches in the framework of their media and describe the influence and persuasive communicative perspective of the news journals in specific cases. Witold Bańka, Polish Minister of TSport and Tourism, and a former athlete himself, is the Council of Europe’s representative in the World Anti- -Doping Agency (WADA). He has embarked on a tough battle against doping in sports, as he describes in his article. Meanwhile Michał Kurtyka, Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Energy and Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Electromobility Development Program, presents a broad perspective on the development and use of electromobility technology in Poland. Although geopolitics, as a discipline of the social sciences, was formed almost two centuries ago, its purpose and methodology remain relevant today. By taking the relatively easy step of overlaying current events onto the world map, it still allows us to formulate answers as to why a particular political center can develop into a great power and shape the course of events in the modern world. And for this reason, we decided to focus much attention on this matter. The second issue of the quarterly contains a geopolitical report, which consists of a series of five article, devoted to the situation and possible scenarios in the near future of East-Central Europe.
