In this context, we should add that our country is at a critical standpoint, waiting for developments that will judge its future course. Thus, we hope that our collective efforts will lead to the end of this recession and to a material and solid recovery. Our Group, as a responsible corporate citizen, deals with all such challenges with a strong sense of responsibility and continues to operate insightfully, having the values of sustainable growth fully embedded in our daily activities and our plans for the future. With our operations we aim to contribute to a sustainable and long lasting recovery of the Greek business environment, through structured investments, employment opportunities and support of the social needs of this country. Through our activities we continuously support our shareholders, customers, employees, suppliers, collaborators and other various stakeholders. During the last 15 years, through continuous organic growth and acquisitions, we have invested more than 1.6 billion euros, which allows us to be flexible and able to face the volatile market conditions successfully. In 2014, we managed once more to set a record not only in sales but also in production. Also, by further exploiting our export potential, we managed to export 75% of our sales. In parallel, we stayed true to our commitments for corporate responsibility. With a workforce of over 1.800 employees in the entire Group, we offer excellent working conditions and we commit to the development of our people with extensive training programmes. We continue to place special emphasis on the implementation of integrated management systems for Health, Safety and the Environment. Aiming at Goal Zero we strive on a daily basis and we foster a culture of safety in all our activities and especially our depots and facilities. We are continuously reducing our environmental footprint through the use of Best Available Techniques, helping to cut emissions of all sorts, to enhance energy efficiency and to manage all byproducts or waste from our main activity. We support the society through a variety of programmes and initiatives, which place emphasis on the needs of the local communities and the young generation that are affected particularly harshly by the crisis. All the above are described in detail in this “Sustainability Report 2014”, the thirteenth such report, which describes our Group’s activities. Its structure is aligned with the recent Global Reporting Initiative G4 guidelines, focusing on the materiality of the data presented and on an objective and transparent presentation of our results. In this context, this Report serves as our Communication On Progress on the basis of the UN Global Compact principles that we endorse and support. Thesis Abstract This thesis examines the principles that defined the military thinking of the Classical Greek city-states. Its focus is on tactical thought: Greek conceptions of the means, methods, and purpose of engaging the enemy in battle. Through an analysis of historical accounts of battles and campaigns, accompanied by a parallel study of surviving military treatises from the period, it draws a new picture of the tactical options that were available, and of the ideals that lay behind them. It has long been argued that Greek tactics were deliberately primitive, restricted by conventions that prescribed the correct way to fight a battle and limited the extent to which victory could be exploited. Recent reinterpretations of the nature of Greek warfare cast doubt on this view, prompting a reassessment of tactical thought – a subject that revisionist scholars have not yet treated in detail. This study shows that practically all the assumptions of the traditional model are wrong. Tactical thought was constrained chiefly by the extreme vulnerability of the hoplite phalanx, its total lack of training, and the general’s limited capacity for command and control on the battlefield. Greek commanders, however, did not let any moral rules get in the way of possible solutions to these problems. Battle was meant to create an opportunity for the wholesale destruction of the enemy, and any available means were deployed towards that goal.

As megafires are becoming more often and their impacts more destructive, through the years, coordinated efforts are directed towards elimination of these tragic events and building of resilient communities. The private sector can play a vital role to achieving these goals, through philanthropic activities that are part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and usually expressed by the corporations’ sustainability reporting (SR). Based on CSR and natural disaster literature, and with the empirical data that were collected, the current research shows A) an important movement from both the Greek and Californian corporations towards the disaster relief efforts, B) the existence of different CSR patterns between the two regions and C) an extensive use of SR of the CSR performers. This is an empirical study among the first that comparatively examine CSR during two megafires in two different parts of the world and aims to add to the existing literature, as well as give a new perspective for future researchers, for corporations and public authorities. Introduction This paper is best introduced by the following summary. It concerns a victory of Argos over Corinth in the late sixth or very early fifth century B.C., a battle to which little attention has been paid because it is not mentioned by any ancient historical writer such as Herodotus. Instead our evidence on it comes mainly in the form of Argos’ dedicatory inscriptions on captured Corinthian armour that she offered in thanks for his help in it to Zeus at Olympia, where excavators and others have found some of it . The evidence of this inscribed armour is first set in its archaeological context (section 2). This shows that the battle must have taken place some time between c. 530 and the mid 490s B.C. The historical evidence is then reviewed (section 3) and among other matters is shown to be consistent with this dating. Next the very important evidence of the inscriptions themselves is discussed (section 4). Special attention is paid to the striking variety of styles of Argive scripts used in them. They are illustrated by facsimiles in Figures I to III and tabulated with details in section 4. From all this evidence it is concluded in section 5, that Corinth’s hoplites could well have suffered substantial loss in the battle. There would probably have been serious repercussions in Corinth and beyond.
