1998 TRENDALL LECTURE Wealthy Corinth: The Archaeology of a Classical City Elizabeth Pemberton Delivered at The Institute of Classical Studies London 24 November 1998 Australian Academy of the Humanities, Proceedings 23, 1998 Wealthy Corinth: The Archaeology of a Classical City stinguished colleagues: I am honoured and delighted to give the second D.Trendall ' memorial lecture, for1 had the highest regard for DaleTrendall both as a scholar and as a person. It was his wish that this series of lectures, which heendowed, should promote thecause ofclassical studies and classical archaeology in Australia, to which hedevoted his life. I thank the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Institute of Classical Studies, two institutions with which Dale was long associated, and also the Institute for Commonwealth Studies for co-sponsoring this talk. I would like to take the opportunity to remind you of the significance of DaleTrendall's scholarship. Karim Arafat recently wrote that Dale's achieve- ment might be even greater than Beazley's, as it was necessary to sort out the different fabrics of South Italy and Sicily, adifficult task, because of the cross fertilization between thedifferent pottery centres. His workcontinues through the Trendall Centre at La Trobe University, made possible by his bequest to theuniversity. Ascloseas I was toDale, Ididnot have the fortune to work with him. So I cannot talk about matters South Italian. My work has been primarily in Ancient Corinth and it is to that city we will go today. Two years ago, the American excavations at Corinth celebrated one hundred years of digging, and yet there is still so much we do not know about the city in all its successive periods.' We do not have many texts, and those wedo have werenot written from acorinthian viewpoint. -

Professor, Technical University of Athens, Greece N.KALTEZIOTIS, Public Works Research Center, Athens, Greece G.TSIAMBAOS, Public Works Research Center, Athens, Greece SYNOPSIS: The Corinth Canal is of great importance regarding the navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and the railway and roadway transportation between Peloponnese and the Central Greece. For a better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of the marls, found in abundance in the narrow zone of the Corinth Canal, investigations of laboratory and in situ testing have been carried out including: Dril ling of boreholes and sampling; laboratory testing (determination of Atterberg limits, unconfined and triaxial compression tests, residual shear strength characteristics of the different types of marls involved, consolidation tests, etc.); mineralogical analysis by using X-Ray diffraction techniques and electronic microscopy. In this paper after considering the Engineering geological aspects of the area, results of the tests described above are presented and critically discussed, some correlations are given and some comparisons with marls from other areas of Greece are considered. -

The crest of the fault-block lies above sea-level whilstin the hanging-wall a marine basin exists. As a result, the diagenetic and structural characteristics of the fault zone record complexfluid involvement. Both early phreatic carbonate syn-kinematic cements (characterized by drusy fabrics, baroque dolomites and crack-seal textures) and late vadose carbonate syn-kinematic cements (characterized by flowstones containing cave-collapse debris) exist in the uplifted footwall to the fault. Downward percolation of vadose meteoric waters and the upwelling of pore waters with elevated temperatures produced the diagenetic features observed within the fault zone. The co-existenceof early phreatic and late vadose cementswithin the fault zone is related to footwall uplift across the water-table and subsequent erosionalunroofing. The present-day elevation of phreaticcements to c. 650mabove current sea-level, providesa minimum estimate of footwall uplift along the fault. The wider implication is that temporal changes in deformation and fluid flow may typify fault-block evolution. -

Solomonidis Rogan Associates, Consulting Engineers - Architects Email: [email protected] Abstract The scope of this paper is the presentation of all the necessary stages for the creation of a marina in a maritime European country, such as Greece, from the starting point of its scheduling as a node in the National network of leisure harbours, to it's final design phase. The whole procedure is demonstrated with the example of a new 700 berthing places Marina at Loutraki, a well-known resort at the northwestern end of the Gulf of Korinthos. A number of parameters are examined, such as the hinterland, which the marina will serve as well as the existing transport accesses. A thorough analysis of the existing and future demand for berthing places in leisure harbours, both for the whole of Greece, and more specifically for the Attica and Argolis areas is performed, setting as time horizon for the estimates the year 2014. The demand is compared to the existing capacity in berthing places, thus establishing the necessity of creating new marinas in the area. The required capacity of the marina is then calculated in terms of places in the sea and on dry, in relation to the local demand, but subject to geographical and other constraints. The main goals of the Master Plan of the marina are outlined and the design proposal is presented with emphasis given on the architectural concept which was followed. -

The Greeks to this day take an ancient pride in ensuring that guests leave with warm memories, and such heartfelt hospitality is to be treated as itself a gift, graciously, without any hint of the international stereotype of the ugly American. The Turks likewise take pride in their hospitality, and the Selçuk region is a popular stop for cruise ships in the Mediterranean, and for boat trips from Samos, which is a Greek island only a mile off Turkey's Aegean coast. To be able to spend two days in Turkey will deepen travelers' appreciation for the eastern Mediterranean. And like the Greeks, the Turks do like Americans--even if they don't always agree with the policies of the U.S. -

THE ROMAN ARCH AT ISTHMIA (PLATES 77-84) D URING THE ROMAN IMPERIALAGE a monumentaltriple arch was the prin- cipal easterly approach to the Sanctuaryof Poseidon at Isthmia.) This arch was con- structed, probably, in the second half of the 1st century after Christ, and its four piers were built into the Northeast Gate of the Fortress on the Hexamilion shortly after A.D. 400. The arch stood in a prominent position on a ridge overlooking the port of Schoinos, and any visitor who approachedIsthmia from the north or east, either by land or by sea, would have ' This report is a result of excavationsin 1967 and 1969 by the University of California, Los Angeles, on behalf of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens with the generous support of the Samuel H.
