Yet Spring will come again and with it the 45th International Congress on Medieval Stud- ies, to which I warmly invite you. As this program attests, an abundance of stimulating subjects, people, and imaginative approaches to all aspects of the Middle Ages await you. With your presence, Kalamazoo will once again offer the quintessence of Medieval Studies. As custom dictates, Valley III cafeteria and adjoining rooms will host booksellers, vendors, and their wares; cafeteria meals will be served in Valley II’s dining hall. The Bernhard Center café will continue to be open for lunch on Saturday, and, mirabile dictu, a newly installed cell phone tower should bring the Valleys into the light of hand-held communications. Friday and Saturday mornings will commence with plenary speakers: Thomas E. Burman of the Uni- versity of Tennessee–Knoxville, this year’s Medieval Academy plenarist, will address us on “Why Were Latin Qur’ans Produced in Christian Spain but Never Read There? Reflections on Spanish-Christian Cul- ture during the Long Twelfth Century.” On Saturday, Kathryn Kerby-Fulton of the University of Notre Dame will talk on “The ‘Clerical Proletariat’ and the Rise of English: A New Look at Fourteenth-Century Book Production.” We are grateful to Boydell & Brewer for sponsoring the Saturday plenary. Special evening entertainment includes a lineup of films and a Friday musical performance featuring old Congress friends, Anne Azéma (voice and hurdy-gurdy) and Shira Kammen (vielle and harp) in a concert entitled “Chanterai pour mon courage: Spiritual Renewal in the Time of the Crusades.” As May approaches, please visit the Congress Web site for updates on program news, additions and changes, as well as maps of our campus and hotel shuttle bus system. The Medieval Institute encourages the use of the online registration system for clar- ity, expediency, and convenience. Attendees may also register by mail or by fax using the printed Registration Form, which is available as a PDF file on the Congress Web site, but those registering by mail or fax pay a $25.00 handling fee. All charges are due at the time of registration. Receipts are issued at the Congress. PRE-REGISTRATION PACKETS Pre-registered attendees will find their packet of conference materials, including a receipt, available for pickup at Congress registration in the Eldridge-Fox lobby (Val- ley III) upon arrival. On-campus housing assignments are given at that time. LATE REGISTRATION Congress attendees may register upon arrival but are assessed a $50.00 late reg- istration fee. Registration is available in the Eldridge-Fox lobby. Please note that on-campus housing is very seldom available to on-site registrants. Alternate housing arrangements should be made before arrival. Any rooms booked to on-site regis- trants will be billed at the single rate, although two attendees who want to share a room may do so. REFUNDS Refunds for registration fees, housing, and meals are made only if Miller Audito- rium has received notification of cancellation by April 28. No refunds are made after that date. vii On-Campus Housing On-campus housing is provided in the co-ed residence halls of the Goldsworth Valley I, II, and III complexes. Registration for on-campus housing is a part of the Congress registra- tion process. Rates are $35.50 per night for a single room and $28.50 per person per night for a double for those who pre-register for the Congress. Any rooms booked to on-site registrants will be billed at the single rate, although two attendees who want to share a room may do so. All on-campus rooms will be singles unless specific requests are received for double rooms, with roommate specified at the time of registration. No changes are accepted after our re- ceipt of registration. Should you request a single room, find that housing has filled, and then wish to consider sharing a room with another Congress attendee, we cannot honor that request. Please plan carefully and indicate special housing requests at the time of registra- tion. Every effort is made to accommodate timely housing requests, but keep in mind that not every request can be fulfilled. If you and a colleague request sharing a double room, we must be in receipt of both registrations before either will be processed. If you and a colleague or colleagues request sharing an adjoining bathroom (i.e., ask to be suitemates), we must be in receipt of all registrations before they will be processed. Room assignments are indicated on the pre-registration packet, and keys are picked up at registration in the Eldridge-Fox lobby. Rooms may be reserved for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights of the Congress, but neither earlier nor later. The campus housing offered through the Congress is designed for undergraduate use, i.e., for individuals 17–22 years of age, and bathrooms are usually shared. Those who require hotel amenities such as air-conditioning and private bathrooms will find them at area ho- tels, where rooms can be booked through Discover Kalamazoo’s centralized hotel booking system.

    The Publishers of the 1723 Book of Constitutions Andrew Prescott he advertisements in the issue of the London newspaper, The Evening Post, for 23 February 1723 were mostly for recently published books, including a new edition of the celebrated directory originally compiled by John Chamberlayne, Magnae Britanniae Notitia, and books offering a new cure for scurvy and advice Tfor those with consumption. Among the advertisements for new books in The Evening Post of 23 February 1723 was the following: This Day is publiſh’d, † || § The CONSTITUTIONS of the FREE- MASONS, containing the Hiſtory, Charges, Regulations, &c., of that moſt Ancient and Right Worſhipful Fraternity, for the Uſe of the Lodges. Dedicated to his Grace the Duke of Montagu the laſt Grand Maſter, by Order of his Grace the Duke of Wharton, the preſent Grand Maſter, Authoriz’d by the Grand Lodge of Maſters and War- dens at the Quarterly Communication. Ordered to be publiſh’d and recommended to the Brethren by the Grand Maſter and his Deputy. Printed for J. Senex, and J. Hooke, both over againſt St Dunſtan’s Church, Fleet-ſtreet. An advertisement in similar terms, also stating that the Constitutions had been pub- lished ‘that day’, appeared in The Post Boy of 26 February, 5 March and 12 March 1723 Volume 121, 2008 147 Andrew J. Prescott and TheLondon Journal of 9 March and 16 March 1723. The advertisement (modified to ‘just publish’d’) continued to appear in The London Journal until 13 April 1723. The publication of The Constitutions of the Free-Masons, or the Book of Constitutions as it has become generally known, was a fundamental event in the development of Grand Lodge Freemasonry, and the book remains an indispensable source for the investigation of the growth of Freemasonry in the first half of the eighteenth century.

Dominic is the patron saint of astronomers. 1 Life 1.1 Birth and parentage Dominic was born in Caleruega,[3] halfway between Osma and Aranda de Duero in Old Castile, Spain. He was named after Saint Dominic of Silos, who is said to be the patron saint of hopeful mothers. The Benedictine abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos lies a few miles north of Caleruega. R A Berman 1 | P a g e Abstract Following the appointment of its first aristocratic Grand Masters in the 1720s and in the wake of its connections to the scientific Enlightenment, ‘Free and Accepted’ Masonry rapidly became part of Britain’s national profile and the largest and arguably the most influential of Britain’s extensive clubs and societies. The new organisation did not evolve naturally from the mediaeval guilds and religious orders that pre-dated it, but was reconfigured radically by a largely self-appointed inner core. Freemasonry became a vehicle for the expression and transmission of the political and religious views of those at its centre, and for the scientific Enlightenment concepts that they championed. The ‘Craft’ also offered a channel through which many sought to realise personal aspirations: social, intellectual and financial. Through an examination of relevant primary and secondary documentary evidence, this thesis seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of contemporary English political and social culture, and to explore the manner in which Freemasonry became a mechanism that promoted the interests of the Hanoverian establishment and connected and bound a number of élite metropolitan and provincial figures.

In particular, Lamentation tableaux by Niccolò dell’Arca and Guido Mazzoni, with their intense sense of realism and expressive pathos, are among the most potent representatives of the Renaissance fascination with life-like imagery and its use as a powerful means of conveying psychologically and emotionally moving narratives. This dissertation examines the versatility of terracotta within the artistic economy of Italian Renaissance sculpture as well as its distinct mimetic qualities and expressive capacities. It casts new light on the historical conditions surrounding the development of the Lamentation tableau and repositions this particular genre of sculpture as a significant form of figurative sculpture, rather than simply an artifact of popular culture. In terms of historical context, this dissertation explores overlooked links between the theme of the Lamentation, the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, codes of chivalric honor and piety, and resurgent crusade rhetoric spurred by the fall of Constantinople in 1453. Reconnected to its religious and political history rooted in medieval forms of Sepulchre devotion, the terracotta Lamentation tableau emerges as a key monument that both ii reflected and directed the cultural and political tensions surrounding East-West relations in later 15th-century Italy.

    Troubadours, trouvères. Lyric poets or poet-musicians of France in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is customary to describe as troubadours those poets who worked in the south of France and wrote in Provençal, the langue d’oc , whereas the trouvères worked in the north of France and wrote in French, the langue d’oil . I. Troubadour poetry 1. Introduction. The troubadours were the earliest and most significant exponents of the arts of music and poetry in medieval Western vernacular culture. Their influence spread throughout the Middle Ages and beyond into French (the trouvères, see §II below), German, Italian, Spanish, English and other European languages. The first centre of troubadour song seems to have been Poitiers, but the main area extended from the Atlantic coast south of Bordeaux in the west, to the Alps bordering on Italy in the east. There were also ‘schools’ of troubadours in northern Italy itself and in Catalonia. Their influence, of course, spread much more widely. Pillet and Carstens (1933) named 460 troubadours; about 2600 of their poems survive, with melodies for roughly one in ten.     The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2018 © 2018 Anne Levitsky All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Song from the Singer: Personification, Embodiment, and Anthropomorphization in Troubadour Lyric Anne Levitsky This dissertation explores the relationship of the act of singing to being a human in the lyric poetry of the troubadours, traveling poet-musicians who frequented the courts of contemporary southern France in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. In my dissertation, I demonstrate that the troubadours surpass traditionally-held perceptions of their corpus as one entirely engaged with themes of courtly romance and society, and argue that their lyric poetry instead both displays the influence of philosophical conceptions of sound, and critiques notions of personhood and sexuality privileged by grammarians, philosophers, and theologians. I examine a poetic device within troubadour songs that I term ‘personified song’—an occurrence in the lyric tradition where a performer turns toward the song he/she is about to finish singing and directly addresses it. This act lends the song the human capabilities of speech, motion, and agency. It is through the lens of the ‘personified song’ that I analyze this understudied facet of troubadour song. Chapter One argues that the location of personification in the poetic text interacts with the song’s melodic structure to affect the type of personification the song undergoes, while exploring the ways in which singing facilitates the creation of a body for the song.
