It’s the moment when you’re most likely to see a rare diamond out in the wild, like Lady Gaga’s 2019 Oscar bauble that was last seen when Audrey Hepburn wore it to the Tiffany Ball in 1957. This year’s ceremony comes at the end of an months-long awards season push that has seen more efforts to try out sustainable gems and more adventurous pieces. On the Oscars red carpet, that translated to new heights of bling on the night’s performers and biggest stars. Mindy Kaling told E!’s Giuliana Rancic that her jewels were worth about $500,000, and had occasioned a minder from Harry Winston, who knew how to guard the jewels while keeping their distance. Here are the night’s most impressive diamond necklaces. The Grace and Frankie star looked stunning while presenting the award for Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars, and she made every single detail of her outfit count. The 82-year-old actress stepped onto the stage at the 92nd Academy Awards in a ruby red, beaded Elie Saab gown with a red coat and a gray pixie haircut. And to pack the final punch, the former fitness guru traded in her signature blonde bob for a silver pixie cut. She carried her now famous red coat, that she said would be the last piece of clothing she ever buys as a symbol of the waste and damage to the environment fashion is causing. She re-wore an Elie Saab gown she debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. And she accessorized the look with jewelry from Pomellato. When the Cats star walked on to the red carpet in a gold dress, all eyes were on her. The Australia native went for an old Hollywood look, with soft curls framing her face, a subtle red lip and a Grecian-style dress. Altogether, it's the ultimate ensemble to wear to the Academy Awards. According to her Instagram, she's wearing a custom gown from the one and only Jason Wu, as well as vintage jewelry from Pomellato. She also detailed her pre-Oscars routine on Instagram, which included a cryo session, hair & makeup and plenty of pics. As her best friend Carly Steel put it, the star is having a total "Marilyn Monroe" moment. There's no doubt Rebel and Carly will have an amazing time at the show tonight, even if they don't end up sandwiched between Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio as she hoped. https://www.eonline.com/news/1120859/rebel-wilson-glitters-in-gold-on-the-red-carpet-at-2020-oscars USA – ONLINE COVERAGE Jane Fonda is a legend, Oscar winner... and eco- friendly queen. On Sunday night, the actress lit up the 2020 Oscars stage to present the final award of the ceremony, Best Picture (which went to Parasite). During her appearance, Fonda dazzled in a glitzy red long-sleeve gown by Elie Saab. The eye-catching couture design featured an explosion of shimmery beads and peek-a-boo material that was worthy of its own award. The fiery red shade, her hoop earrings and fresh- faced makeup made her ensemble stand out even more. "At Oscars wearing Pomellato jewelry because it only uses responsible, ethically-harvested gold and sustainable diamonds," she tweeted ahead of appearance. However, her jewelry wasn't the only eco-friendly thing about her outfit. If her dress looked a bit familiar that's because Fonda has worn this exact piece before. In fact, she first turned heads in this piece at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. She tied her lewk together with drop earrings, a flashy Gucci clutch, a bold red lip. https://www.eonline.com/news/1121459/jane-fonda-s-2020-oscars-look-proves-a-damn-good-dress-shouldn-t- be-worn-once USA – ONLINE COVERAGE Rebel Wilson at the Oscars 2020 Wearing a gorgeous low-cut Jason Wu gold gown and a Pomellato vintage necklace. Specifically, I examine how luxury brands introduced the commodification of fashion and laid the groundwork for the entrance of fast fashion retailers. Furthermore, I discuss how this transformation affected not only the fashion industry, but also the consumer and the environment. After evaluating each of these elements, I present the slow fashion movement as a sustainable and viable alternative to the current state of the fashion industry. Through theoretical support, an analysis of consumer demographics and psychographics, and a thorough investigation of current trends in the fashion industry, slow fashion emerges as the best solution for reinventing the fashion industry and amending the distortion that has occurred within it. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION ...............................................................................................................5

Surprise and seduction: Theorising fashion via the sociology of wit Dita Svelte A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Social Sciences Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences UNSW Sydney 12 September 2019 THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES Thesis/Dissertation Sheet Surname or Family name: SVELTE First name: DITA Other name/s: ISHTAR ARTEMIS Abbreviation for degree as given in the University calendar: Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) School: School of Social Sciences Faculty: Arts and Social Sciences Title: Surprise and seduction: Theorising fashion via the sociology of wit Abstract 350 words maximum: What insights might a sociology of wit as applied to the phenomenon of fashion generate? This thesis applies the sociology of humour to fashion to develop a concept of wit that contributes to further understanding fashion. The thesis argues that this concept of wit is characterised by qualities of surprise and seduction. Surprise is defined as the experience of an unexpected, creative intellectual insight expressed in a pithy manner; seduction is the experience of being led astray, and also the desire of the subject to be led astray. The thesis demonstrates the presence of empirical sites of wit within fashion in the form of the dandy and glamour. It utilises Thomas Carlyle’s Sartor Resartus [2000] (1836) to further conceptualise the wit of fashion at the intersection of theories of humour and theories of fashion. The contribution of the wit of fashion to classical texts in the sociology of fashion

  • The Oscars Red Carpet Pre-Show
Networking Knowledge 7(4) All About Oscar An Educational and Inspirational Broadcast: The Oscars Red Carpet Pre-Show LUKASZ SWIATEK, The University of Sydney ABSTRACT The annual Academy Awards pre-show, currently titled The Oscars: Red Carpet Live, has become an integral part of Hollywood’s ‘night of nights’. Produced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the show captures a media event or media spectacle that has strong commercial imperatives. The pre-show is often perceived to be nothing more than an insipid commentary about stars, their personal lives and, of course, the clothes that they wear on Oscar night. However, this article argues that the pre-show is much more informative and richer than simplistic criticisms suggest. Specifically, the broadcast educates viewers about filmmaking and the field of cinema, as well as social norms and customs, presenting behaviours and attitudes that are considered to be acceptable and unacceptable. A detailed analysis of the 2013 show confirms this argument; it also finds that parts of the broadcast are inspirational – intentionally and unintentionally so – providing viewers with motivational stories and stimulating ideas. KEYWORDS Academy Awards; Oscars; red carpet; fashion; film industry; education; inspiration; marketing; media spectacle; media event 1 Networking Knowledge 7(4) All About Oscar Introduction The Oscars red carpet pre-show is eagerly anticipated and attentively watched each year by millions of viewers around the world. Red carpet moments are often unforgettable, as Bronwyn Cosgrave (2007, vii) reminds us: ‘Oscars after Oscars, since the ceremony’s inception in 1929, it is a red-carpet look memorably modelled by an actress great that’s proved the preeminent showstopper, consistently upstaging other definitive aspects of the ceremony from the opening monologue to the speeches’.
