2017 Report on the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site
Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site Management Plan 2017 Annual Report Introduction to Management of the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site The Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site (HO) Management Plan (MP) was approved by the Board of Land and Natural Resources (BLNR) on December 1, 2010. Condition #2 states: “Beginning in November 2012 the University will submit to DLNR an annual report summarizing any construction activities occurring at HO; Habitat Conservation Plans; Monitoring Plans for Invertebrates, Flora, and Fauna; Programmatic Agreements on Cultural Resources; Invasive Species Control Plans and other related plans, The Report should be brief but thorough. This report should also be presented to the Board of Land and Natural Resources for the first year, and every five years thereafter.” Therefore, this report summarizes activities that occurred under the MP from December 1, 2016 to November 30, 2017. The land use described in this report, on activities under the HO MP, qualifies as an identified use in the General Subzone and is consistent with the objectives of the General Subzone of the land. The objectives of the General Subzone (HAR 13-5-14) are to designate open space where specific conservation uses may not be defined, but where urban uses would be premature. The land use is consistent with astronomical research facilities for advanced studies of astronomy and atmospheric sciences. HO is located within a General Subzone of the State of Hawai’i Conservation District that has been set aside for observatory site purposes only. Identified applicable land uses in the General Subzone, include R-3 Astronomy Facilities and (D-1) Astronomy facilities under an approved management plan (HAR 13-5-25). -
The Jumping Plant-Lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) of the Maltese Islands
BULLETIN OF THE ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF MALTA (2020) Vol. 11 : 103–117 DOI: 10.17387/BULLENTSOCMALTA.2020.18 The jumping plant-lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) of the Maltese Islands David MIFSUD* ABSTRACT. Twenty-one species of jumping plant-lice accommodated in five different families are here recorded from the Maltese Islands in an annotated checklist. The Aphalaridae is represented by four species (Agonoscena targionii (Lichtenstein), Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor, Colposcenia aliena (Löw) and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore), of which two (B. occidentalis and G. brimblecombei) are alien species originating from Australia. The Homotomidae is represented by Homotoma ficus (Linnaeus) and Macrohomotoma gladiata Kuwayama, the latter being an alien species originating from the Far East. The Liviidae is represented by Euphyllura olivina (Costa), Diaphorina lycii Loginova and Psyllopsis fraxinicola (Foerster). The Psyllidae is represented by Acizzia uncatoides (Ferris & Klyver), Cacopsylla myrthi (Puton) and C. pyri (Linnaeus), of which Acizzia uncatoides is an alien species originating from Australia. Finally, the most species-rich family is the Triozidae, represented by nine species (Bactericera albiventris (Foerster), B. crithmi (Löw), B. trigonica Hodkinson, Heterotrioza chenopodii (Reuter), Lauritrioza alacris (Flor), Trioza centranthi (Vallot), T. galii Foerster, T. kiefferi Giard and T. urticae (Linnaeus)). For each of the above species, collection data, distribution, host- plant data and other relevant information is provided. Lycium intricatum Boiss. is a new host-plant record for Diaphorina lycii, and Rhamnus lycioides subsp. oleoides (L.) Jahand. & Maire is a new host-plant record for Cacopsylla myrthi. A host- plant shift is documented for Bactericera crithmi, which alternates between Ferula melitensis Brullo et al. in winter and Crithmum maritimum L. -

There is a general consensus that the diversity of a biotic community can have an influence on its stability, but the strength, ubiquity, and relative importance of this effect is less clear. In the context of biological invasions, diversity has usually been studied in terms of its effect on a community’s invasibility, but diversity may also influence stability by affecting the magnitude of compositional or functional changes experienced by a community upon invasion. We examined the impacts of invasive ants on arthropod communities at five natural area sites in the Hawaiian Islands, and assessed whether differences among sites in community diversity and density variables were related to measures of stability. Ant invasion was usually associated with significant changes in overall community composition, as measured by Bray- Curtis distances, particularly among endemic subsets of the communities. Changes in mean species richness were also strong at three of the five sites. Among sites, diversity was negatively related to stability as measured by resistance to overall compositional change, but this effect could not be separated from the strong negative effect of invasive ant density on compositional stability. When compositional stability was measured as proportional change in richness, the best predictor of stability among endemic community subsets was endemic richness, with richer communities losing proportionately more species than species-poor communities. -

Harper's Island Wetlands Butterflies & Moths (2020)
Introduction Harper’s Island Wetlands (HIW) nature reserve, situated close to the village of Glounthaune on the north shore of Cork Harbour is well known for its birds, many of which come from all over northern Europe and beyond, but there is a lot more to the wildlife at the HWI nature reserve than birds. One of our goals it to find out as much as we can about all aspects of life, both plant and animal, that live or visit HIW. This is a report on the butterflies and moths of HIW. Butterflies After birds, butterflies are probably the one of the best known flying creatures. While there has been no structured study of them on at HIW, 17 of Ireland’s 33 resident and regular migrant species of Irish butterflies have been recorded. Just this summer we added the Comma butterfly to the island list. A species spreading across Ireland in recent years possibly in response to climate change. Hopefully we can set up regular monitoring of the butterflies at HIW in the next couple of years. Butterfly Species Recorded at Harper’s Island Wetlands up to September 2020. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

Quantifying dispersal in British noctuid moths Hayley Bridgette Clarke Jones Doctor of Philosophy University of York Biology September 2014 1 Abstract Dispersal is an important process in the ecology and evolution of organisms, affecting species’ population dynamics, gene flow, and range size. Around two thirds of common and widespread British macro-moths have declined in abundance over the last 40 years, and dispersal ability may be important in determining whether or not species persist in this changing environment. However, knowledge of dispersal ability in macro-moths is lacking because dispersal is difficult to measure directly in nocturnal flying insects. This thesis investigated the dispersal abilities of British noctuid moths to examine how dispersal ability is related to adult flight morphology and species’ population trends. Noctuid moths are an important taxon to study because of their role in many ecosystem processes (e.g. as pollinators, pests and prey), hence their focus in this study. I developed a novel tethered flight mill technique to quantify the dispersal ability of a range of British noctuid moths (size range 12 – 27 mm forewing length). I demonstrated that this technique provided measures of flight performance in the lab (measures of flight speed and distance flown overnight) that reflected species’ dispersal abilities reported in the wild. I revealed that adult forewing length was a good predictor of inter- specific differences in flight performance among 32 noctuid moth species. I also found high levels of intra-specific variation in flight performance, and both adult flight morphology and resource-related variables (amount of food consumed by individuals prior to flight, mass loss by adults during flight) contributed to this variation.
