Reading Plato with Charmadas (Cic. De Or. 1.45-47) Evidence for the reading of Plato in the New Academy is sparse, and our understanding of how sceptical Academics interpreted Plato is limited (Glucker 1978: 31–64; Barnes 1991; Annas 1992; Tarrant 2000). Concerning Arcesilaus’ interpretation of Plato, Crassus in his history of the schism between oratory and philosophy notes how Arcesilaus found akatalepsia (the view that, according to infallibilist criteria of knowledge, nothing is known) in various dialogues of Plato and other Socratic works (Cic. De Or. 3.67). Frequent accusations that Arcesilaus foisted his own view on philosophical predecessors in order to gain from their authority confirm, at least, that Arcesilaus upheld sceptical readings of Plato (Plut. Col. 1121f-1122a; Cic. Luc. 15). Those charitable to the Academy, both ancient and contemporary (e.g. Cic. Luc. 74; Cooper 2004), have reconstructed responsible sceptical readings of Plato, such that the Academic’s aim in reading Plato is not to take advantage of its founder’s authority. Cicero’s depiction of when Crassus read Gorgias with the Academic Charmadas in 110BCE (De Or. 1.45-47) is all the more interesting given this paucity of evidence. Even if entirely fabricated, the account is authored by a self-professed Academic and, therefore, merits analysis for the Academy’s view about reading Plato. Against the competing interpretations of Lévy (2005), Hösle (2008), and, most recently, Altman (2016), I defend the position of Dörrie (1987) that Charmadas read Plato sceptically. I argue that only a reading which makes a distinction between Socrates as Plato’s mouthpiece and Plato as the author, where Socrates is dogmatic while the author is aporetic, makes proper sense of Crassus’ judgment that he both disagreed with Plato and admired him for his rhetorical skill. -

This article provides a new edition of a passage from Philodemus’ Index Academicorum THE PUPILS OF PHILO (PHerc. 1021, col. XXXIV 6-19), in which pupils of Philo of Larissa are listed. Several OF LARISSA AND new reading allow for a better understanding of the content and rendering of this list, PHILODEMUS’ STAY one of which might even corroborate the hypothesis that Philodemus sojourned in Sicily. IN SICILY (PHERC. 1021, Keywords: Philo of Larissa, Heraclitus of Tyre, Philodemus, Sicily, Historia Academi- COL. XXXIV 6-19) corum Shortly before the end of his Index Academicorum Philodemus informs us about the life of Philo of Larissa (PHerc. 1021, coll. XXXIII f.).1 Notwithstanding KILIAN FLEISCHER its fragmentary state, the passage is highly valuable, since it preserves much otherwise unattested information on Philo and allows us to reconstruct to a certain extent his personal and philosophical development. The passage dealing with Philo ends with a list of pupils that was long thought to include the pupils of Antiochus of Ascalon. Puglia was the first to argue convincingly that the names listed represent pupils of Philo, not of Antiochus.2 In this contribution I will present a new edition of this list (col. Auezov South Kazakhstan State University, KAZAKHSTAN Faculty of Pedagogy and Culture, Shymkent Received 8 November 2019 ▪ Revised 17 December 2019 ▪ Accepted 23 December 2019 Abstract Plato’s Academy is undoubtedly the first higher education institution in history, and in ancient Athens itself represents the most important educational institution. It constituted in the context of the universal development that took place in ancient Athens, in the 5th and 4th century BC, and it continued to work until the Byzantine Emperor Justinian forbade the work of all schools of philosophy (529 AD). This development, which is part of the so-called Golden Age of ancient Athens, represents the period of Greek history in which the foundations of Western civilization originated, as we know it today. Plato appears as one of the greatest philosophers of ancient Greece, along with Socrates and Aristotle, to the first of whom appears as a student and to the second as a teacher. Philosophy in the true sense of the word was created in Plato’s era in ancient Athens (Russell, 1975), and Plato’s Academy, in which he, along with his students, talked about various philosophical topics through the Garden of Akademos, was the impetus for this development. There are also opinions that the development of philosophy after Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle is only of reproductive character when it comes to the basics of philosophy. -

At the same time, because of its advocacy of an asceticism informed by its author’s Neoplatonism, Abstinence is often taken to be concerned primarily with the health of the human soul. By approaching Abstinence as a work of moral suasion and a work of literature, whose intra- and intertextual resonances yield something more than a collection of propositions or an invitation to Quellenforschung, I aim to push beyond interpretations that bracket the arguments regarding animals as merely dialectical; cast the text’s other-directed principle of justice as wholly ii subordinated to a self-directed principle of purity; or accept as decisive Porphyry’s exclusion of craftsmen, athletes, soldiers, sailors, and orators from his call to vegetarianism. -

DILUZIO Baylor University Scarcely five years after the Roman people hailed him as “father of the fatherland” for his role in saving the Republic from a revolutionary plot, Cicero was banished from Rome. A violent and demagogic tribune, backed by a cabal of ruthless senators including Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great, had arranged for his removal. Though he would return the following year, Rome’s leading orator increasingly found himself politically hamstrung and the republican system plagued by dysfunction. Intent on remedying the ills of the Republic, Cicero took to writing philosophy. He began, significantly enough, with On the Ideal Orator (de Oratore), the first of three dialogues written over five years, all of which aimed to defend and encourage the teaching of republican values among the Roman nobility. All senators were orators capable of addressing the courts, the Senate, and popular meetings; through their speeches, they set policy, advocated justice, shaped public opinion, and won popular acclaim. Since the end of the second century BC, however, Rome’s republican consensus had faltered, and a number of powerful orators had used their education and natural abilities to stir unrest for their own political ends. Cicero had noted this fact in the introduction to his youthful de Inventione, a rhetorical handbook. Despite the differences in style and content, the prologue of de Inventione adumbrates several themes that would feature prominently in his later de Oratore, among them, the essential role of oratory in establishing and sustaining the Republic and the need for orators to possess wisdom and eloquence (Inv. -

As to the former group, as I was reading over the account of Polemon’s conversion to philosophy, something possibly significant struck me, which had not done so previously. 1 This is a very popular anecdote, of which Gigante is able to list fully 19 versions in his collection of the ‘fragments,’’ 2 which involves Polemon, who at this stage is a notorious rake, on the head of an agreement with his young friends ( synthemenos tois neois ) – presumably some sort of wager was involved – lurching into Xenocrates’ seminar, drunk and garlanded (methyôn kai estephanômenos ), with the purpose, we must imagine, of causing some sort of mayhem, and discomfiting the notoriously unflappable Xenocrates. History, operating imperceptibly, tends to provide us with an overview of the rise and fall of philosophical movements, an overarching perspective to which we are blinded when studying the key figures within the limits of their time and space. It is fascinating to observe how philosophical doctrines mutate or change course over time, for reasons whose significance for the evolution of the system as a whole become apparent only when that evolution has ended, but which go unnoticed in the heat and clamour of the dialectical battles that shaped it. The moderate scepticism propounded by Arcesilaus342 and Carneades marked the heyday of the Academy; under their followers, the philosophical stance of the Academy shifted towards a striking dogmatism which eventually prompted its downfall. Little by little, scepticism began to fade, giving way first to a semi-dogmatic outlook and later to the most unyielding dogmatism.
