The Politics of Roman Memory in the Age of Justinian DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Marion Woodrow Kruse, III Graduate Program in Greek and Latin The Ohio State University 2015 Dissertation Committee: Anthony Kaldellis, Advisor; Benjamin Acosta-Hughes; Nathan Rosenstein Copyright by Marion Woodrow Kruse, III 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation explores the use of Roman historical memory from the late fifth century through the middle of the sixth century AD. The collapse of Roman government in the western Roman empire in the late fifth century inspired a crisis of identity and political messaging in the eastern Roman empire of the same period. I argue that the Romans of the eastern empire, in particular those who lived in Constantinople and worked in or around the imperial administration, responded to the challenge posed by the loss of Rome by rewriting the history of the Roman empire. The new historical narratives that arose during this period were initially concerned with Roman identity and fixated on urban space (in particular the cities of Rome and Constantinople) and Roman mythistory. By the sixth century, however, the debate over Roman history had begun to infuse all levels of Roman political discourse and became a major component of the emperor Justinian’s imperial messaging and propaganda, especially in his Novels. The imperial history proposed by the Novels was aggressivley challenged by other writers of the period, creating a clear historical and political conflict over the role and import of Roman history as a model or justification for Roman politics in the sixth century. -

Introduction The paper discusses two seemingly separated topics: the origin and function of the Liar Paradox in ancient Greek philosophy and the Reduction ad absurdum mode of argumentation. Its goal is to show how the two topics fit together and why they are closely connected. The accepted tradition is that Eubulides of Miletos was the first to formulate the Liar Paradox correctly and that the paradox was part of the philosophical discussion of the Megarian School. Which version of the paradox was formulated by Eubulides is unknown, but according to some hints given by Aristotle and an incorrect version given by Cicero1, the version was probably as follows: The paradox is created from the Liar sentence ‘I am lying’. -

Atlantis: Myths, Ancient and Modern Harold Tarrant Abstract In this paper I show that the story of Atlantis, first sketched in Plato's Timaeus and Critias, has been artificially shrouded in mystery since antiquity. While it has been thought from Proclus to the close of the twentieth century that Plato's immediate followers were divided on the issue of whether the story was meant to be historically true, this results from a simple misunderstanding of what historia had meant when the early Academic Crantor was first being cited as an exponent of a literal rather than an allegorical interpretation. The term was then applied to straightforward stories that were told as if they were true. Iamblichus argued for a deeper meaning that did not exclude the truth, and Proclus' belief in an inspired Plato leads him to assume that a Platonic historia must be true. Hence he misreads Crantor as having been committed to historical truth and opposes him to allegorical interpreters. Scholars have continued to see Crantor as a proponent of the historical Atlantis without adequate examination of the evidence, an indication of our own need to preserve the tantalizing uncertainties of such powerful stories. I. Introduction Human beings, it seems, have a natural need for myth, a need that has not passed with the advent of the written word, but rather mutated. The advent of modern science, offering strikingly new ways of explaining the workings of our world, has not overridden the need to hear a plausible account of how this world began, as if we still need a narrative of its birth in order to understand how it is. -

Towards Determining the Chief Function of the Settlement of Borysthenes Jaroslav V. Domanskij & Konstantin K. Marcenko The site of Borysthenes, the earliest Greek settlement in the northern Black Sea area, is located on the island of Berezan’ situated at the mouth of the estuaries of the Dnieper and Bug rivers. The large-scale historical and archaeological research currently being carried out there has already yield- ed a number of significant discoveries. Of particular importance is some additional evidence recently obtained on the date of the origin of this colony, its outward appearance, culture, and historical development, as well as its relations with the barbarians of the hinterland.1 Yet the most important result of the excavations of recent years is the discovery of the sacred precinct at the settlement – the temenos with the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite from the second half of the 6th and beginning of the 5th century BC.2 It is possible that this fact may tip the balance, at least for now, in favour of the hypothesis about the polis status of Borysthenes. Nevertheless, it must be acknowledged that the very important question about the causes of and motivation behind the appearance of the first group of colonists in this remote region of the Greek oikoumene – i.e. the question about the basic function of early Borysthenes – has remained extremely con- troversial. In this respect, almost the entire conceivable spectrum of ideas and concepts co-exists comfortably in modern historiography. The question is, indeed, difficult to answer, not only with respect to Borysthenes itself but also to many other Greek settlements in the northern Black Sea area, and although there seem to be answers for the period of the mature and fully developed existence of the Greek cities, the problem becomes extremely complicated when focussing on the period of the formation and initial devel- opment of these cities. -

BOOTH NE of the mysteries about Zeno of Elea's arguments is that, whereas learn from all the available that Zeno was we evidence particularly concerned to defend the One of Parmenides 1, yet we find him, in his arguments about plurality, doing all that he can to refute the "ones" of a plurality.2 This would be reasonable if we could be sure that his arguments were valid only against the "ones" of a plurality, not against Parmenides's One; but it is by no means certain that this is true, as we shall see in the course of my discussion. The difficulty was already felt by the ancient commentators 3, and perhaps by Plato as well 4 ; it may be a "pseudo-problem", but if so, it is a pseudo-problem of some antiquity. One suggested solution is to the effect that, before Zeno produced his 5 arguments, certain critics had attacked Parmenides's One with much the same arguments as Zeno later used to attack the "ones" of the pluralists. The two main sources of evidence 6 for this suggestion are a passage in Plato's Parmenides ( i 2 8 c), and Zeno's arguments themselves ' ; a third is possibly to be found in the arguments of Parmenides's other pupil, Melissus.8 There is, regrettably, no definite statement on the subject in any of our authorities. In the passage from the Parmenides ( i 2 8 c), Plato makes the character "Zeno" apologize for the shortcomings of his book about plurality: "It I is really an attempt to support Parmenides's argument against those who try to redicule his theory that 'One is', saying that, if 'One is', then many absurd and inconsistent conclusions follow. -

Roman historian Florus describes the traditional ethnic composition of Rome at the beginning of his chapter on the Social War, Rome’s war with its Italian allies which began in 91 b.c. Although he would judge the actions of the rebels to be criminal, he goes on to criticize Rome for not sharing 2 the citizenship with the deserving peoples of Italy sooner. After all, as a contemporary of Florus would echo in his history, the Italian upper classes had only led the revolt because they had desired to be “partners 3 in empire instead of subjects.” Implicit within these comments is that the Latins, Sabines, and Etruscans had dared to hope this before and had succeeded, and now they were the dominant groups within the Roman state. Auezov South Kazakhstan State University, KAZAKHSTAN Faculty of Pedagogy and Culture, Shymkent Received 8 November 2019 ▪ Revised 17 December 2019 ▪ Accepted 23 December 2019 Abstract Plato’s Academy is undoubtedly the first higher education institution in history, and in ancient Athens itself represents the most important educational institution. It constituted in the context of the universal development that took place in ancient Athens, in the 5th and 4th century BC, and it continued to work until the Byzantine Emperor Justinian forbade the work of all schools of philosophy (529 AD). This development, which is part of the so-called Golden Age of ancient Athens, represents the period of Greek history in which the foundations of Western civilization originated, as we know it today. Plato appears as one of the greatest philosophers of ancient Greece, along with Socrates and Aristotle, to the first of whom appears as a student and to the second as a teacher. Philosophy in the true sense of the word was created in Plato’s era in ancient Athens (Russell, 1975), and Plato’s Academy, in which he, along with his students, talked about various philosophical topics through the Garden of Akademos, was the impetus for this development. There are also opinions that the development of philosophy after Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle is only of reproductive character when it comes to the basics of philosophy.
