On Behalf of the Southern Football Netball League Board and Administration I extend a warm welcome to the remaining football Matt Grimwood – SFNL Netball Officer (Under 19s, Thirds and Division 1) and entire netball community who I am pleased to provide an update on the plans for SFNL netball this are about to commence their seasons. year and in the future.

Last week we saw the Division 2 and 3 football seasons begin as well The continual growth of netball has meant an increase in divisions as the much anticipated Season Launch Division 1 match between from 2015. Over the off-season we were delighted to introduce Netball Officer, Matt Grimwood, a dedicated resource to Netball. The role is critical Last year we had a combination of eight clubs with 12 teams spread for the future of netball in the SFNL and has already seen some great across Division 1 and 2. At the moment we have 10 clubs with 14 teams traction with: spread across Division 1 and 2. This makes for a slow progression and we feel if we continue this trend, within the next few years we will have • Umpire’s / Netball Coordinators session to address new rules; strong Division 1 and 2 competitions, each featuring 10-plus teams. • Introduction of Under 19 Netball competition; Looking to the future, we will be building a competition structure • Streamlined VNA process / team registrations; that prioritises our premier divisions (1 – 4) at the best available time slots. These time slots will be issued to clubs well before the • Consultative Grading Process; commencement of the 2017 season and will be non-negotiable. We will also look at the game day structure and collect feedback on the • Secured Netball Interleague for Under 19s and Open against two preferred time to fixture the competition. netball leagues. The above are concepts for SFNL netball moving forward and please With the steep growth yet again, we now have challenges finding look out for our Netball Engagement Survey, to be released soon and the balance between a professional and social netball competition. the feedback provided will shape the netball structure for 2017 and Clubs are wanting different things from the competition and while our beyond. previous structure has been sufficing, it is now time to plan for the next evolution of our netball competition. DIVISION 2: THE INNER SANCTUM / JASON BARBIN @JBarbin10

Round 1 of Division 2 in the Southern Football Netball too strong in the end however, booting five goals to one in the League is done and dusted and boy oh boy were there some final term to win by 39 points. Lem Nguyen was named the surprising results! best for Springy.

Keysborough 8.13 (61) def Skye 7.9 (51) Round two kicks off on Saturday and six sides will be looking The Burra got their first win of the season but had to hold for their first wins of the season when they take to the field off a resurgent Bombers outfit in the process. Neither side for the opening bounce. played their best football, but both showed positive signs for the rest of the season. Will Gayfer was slick in defence CHELSEA HEIGHTS v BLACK ROCK (Beazley Reserve) for Keysborough as it took a 23-point half time lead. Marc The Heighters play their first game at home this season and Frizell was dangerous for Skye as it mounted a second will be looking to bounce back against the newly promoted half comeback while Ben Evans took his opportunities up Black Rock. Both sides would’ve been disappointed no to forward. In the end it wasn’t enough as three goals from Cory start the season with a win but they get a chance here. The Hargreaves sealed the win for Keysborough. Jets impressed with their performance against Hampton last week while the Heighters were a little disappointing. Caulfield 15.13 (103) def Chelsea Heights 13.11 (89) Regardless the boys from Beazley Reserve should be too The Bears caused the first upset of the season while strong this week. announcing themselves as a team to watch in 2016 after defeating the Heighters by 14 points. Tom Heagney starred Chelsea Heights by 23 points with four goals for the victors who powered away to a 26-point SKYE v PORT MELBOURNE COLTS (Carrum Downs half time lead thanks to an 11-goal half. Although the Bears Recreation Reserve) could only manage four goals after the long break, their back The Bombers are yet to be back to their best and will be half was superb in holding Chelsea Heights to six. Former tested against a strong Port Melbourne side that are a picture St Pauls utility Nick Gilbert got plenty of the ball in his debut of confidence following their thumping Round 1 victory. The while Matthew Johansson (three goals) and Andrew Cupit Bombers will be keen to maintain a strong record at home were the best for the Chelsea Heights. this season but will be up against it taking on the Colts who Black Rock 9.4 (58) def by Hampton 10.12 (72) should be able to make it 2-0 in their first SFNL campaign. The boys from the Toolbox got away to a perfect start with a Port Melbourne Colts by 30 points win over the Jets in a confidence boosting performance. Tom Burley and Lachlan Batt kicked three majors for Hampton MURRUMBEENA v HEATHERTON (Murrumbeena Park) while Rhys Pierce was best on ground in the hard-fought win, The boys from the Beena Arena will be bitterly disappointed which saw the Hammers bag six goals in the second half. with their Round 1 efforts and will look for atonement Black Rock wasn’t disgraced in its first Division 2 match since against the Tonners this week. Heatherton will be confident 2012 and showed it has the talent to compete in the second after its win over Springvale Districts and will look to cause flight in 2016. Nick Hellyer was named as the Jets’ best while another upset. Although last week’s result was a setback, Kristian Bliesner bagged three goals. Murrumbeena are still a legitimate contender in my eyes and will bounce back with a win. Port Melbourne Colts 27.18 (180) def Murrumbeena 13.3 (81) The Colts kicked off their Southern Football Netball League Murrumbeena by 25 points career in scintillating style with a 99-point victory over 2015 grand finalists Murrumbeena. Port Melbourne had winners SPRINGVALE DISTRICTS v CAULFIELD (Springvale Reserve) all over the ground, finishing with 12 different goal kickers Springvale will be desperate to get a win on the board but led by Jason Butty with eight while Matthew Dumbleton was will have it tough coming up against a Bears side on top of named best on ground. The Colts set up the win with a 12- the world after defeating Chelsea Heights. Caulfield was a goal to six opening half before surging forward and booting big improver in 2015 and look to be continuing on an upward another 15 in the second half to secure their first win of the trend. The Bears will be simply too good in this one. season. Darcy Hargrave (two goals) was best on ground for Caulfield by 26 points the Beena. HIGHETT v KEYSBOROUGH (Turner Road Reserve) Heatherton 9.17 (71) def Springvale Districts 4.8 (32) The Kennel will be up and about on Saturday as Highett The Tonners opened the season with a vital win over Springy kicks off its season after having the bye in Round 1. The and produced a performance that may surprise many as the Dogs host Keysborough who started the season off with a season progresses. Kane Tucker was best on ground with win and although it wasn’t its best performance, will give three goals in the win while Matthew Van Schajik and Pat them confidence going into Round 2. This is the kind of game Jamieson finished with two. Heatherton started strongly and Highett normally gets up for and I’m tipping the Dogs to be led by 17 points at half time but inaccurate kicking in the third ready for a battle. quarter allowed Springvale to fight back and the Demons only trailed by 12 points at the final break. Heatherton proved to be Highett by five points.
