AFL VICTORIA RELEASE AFL Victoria Is Particularly Pleased to Again See
AFL VICTORIA RELEASE AFL Victoria is particularly pleased to again see over half of the new talent selected in the NAB AFL Draft come from Victorian football. 36 Victorian players were selected in last night’s NAB AFL Draft, with 33 players recruited from the TAC Cup competition and three from the Peter Jackson VFL. Victorian community football and the talented player pathway produced 55% of new draftees while South Australia produced 21%, Western Australia 18%, Tasmania 5% and Queensland 1%. AFL Victoria General Manager Grant Williams believes the results reflect the strong talent development pathways in Victoria. “The NAB AFL Draft continues to highlight the variety of pathways in which talented players are being developed in Victoria, starting at a local community Club level and working their way up through the talented player pathway either via the TAC Cup or VFL competitions.” Victoria produced eight out of the first 10 draft selections, with Dandenong Southern Stingrays Lachie Whitfield becoming the eleventh number one pick from the TAC Cup competition in its 21 year history, and the fourth Dandenong top pick. Whitfield joined the likes of former Stingrays Jeff White (1994), Travis Johnstone (1997) and Tom Scully (2009) all of whom had their name read out first on AFL Draft night. “The TAC Cup competition continues to be the premier drafting ground for AFL footballers, with over 1,000 players having now been drafted over the 21 years of the competitions existence.” “Congratulations should go to each of AFL Victoria’s Talent Managers who manage quality programs in each of Victoria’s twelve regions that field teams in the TAC Cup competition. -

OR analysis of sporting rules { A survey. Euro- pean Journal of Operational Research, 232(1):1-8, 2014 ) recently presented a survey of sporting rules from an Operational Research (OR) perspective. He surveyed 21 sports, which consider the rules of sports and tournaments and whether changes have led to unintended consequences. The paper con- cludes \Overall, it would seem that this is just a taster and there may be plenty more such studies to come". In this paper, we present one such study, by looking at specific examples where the rules of sports have led to unforeseen and/or unwanted conse- quences. It is hoped that through this, and other such studies, sports au- thorities will be far better equipped to make more informed decisions about changing the rules for a given sport/tournament. We believe that this is the first time that such a comprehensive review of sporting rules, which have led to unexpected consequences, has been pub- lished in the scientific literature. Keywords: Sport, Strategies, Incentives 1. Introduction Wright (2014) recently published an invited review which looks at sport- ing rules from the perspective of Operational Research (OR). He considered 21 sports, carrying out a post-hoc analysis of rule changes, finding, for ex- ample, that changes in the rules of volleyball did lead (as desired) to more predictable match lengths but also led to more defensive play, which was un- foreseen. -

Case Studies Into the Invisible Presence of Aboriginal People
School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry Faculty of Humanities Connecting the Dots: Case Studies into the ‘Invisible Presence’ of Aboriginal People Living in Victoria Jessi Coyle This thesis is presented for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy of Curtin University January 2019 To the best of my knowledge and belief this thesis contains no material previously published by any other person except where due acknowledgement is made. This thesis contains no material which has been accepted for the award of any other degree or diploma in any university. Signed: Date: 15 January 2019 ABSTRACT Aboriginal Victorians have been rendered as an ‘invisible presence’ by the various discourses of race and culture that emerged in 19th-century forms of colonialism, which remain influential today. This thesis demonstrates how (white) belonging is constructed within national narratives by drawing on case study analyses of contemporary Victoria’s central and western goldfields districts, and of Aboriginal Victorian participation in Australian (Rules) Football. Semi-structured interviews were conducted across two case studies, with 28 Aboriginal participants and four non- Aboriginal participants. Interviews were analysed using a grounded theory framework, which prioritises culturally respectful and transparent research by positioning the research around participant testimony rather than the 19th-century colonial research conventions that are still influential and popular today. Working within critical theory, this thesis draws on race and settler colonialism to position the invisible presence of Aboriginal people within the ‘(white) settler colonial psyche’. A central feature of the (white) settler colonial psyche is the maintenance of settler sovereignty, as imagined through (white) belonging.
