Proud Major Sponsor 6 September 28-29, 2013 CHIEF FOOTBALL WRITER MARK DUFFIELD’S 10 BURNING QUESTIONS THAT WILL DECIDE THE PREMIERSHIP

Who plays on ? Can the Hawks cope with 1 It is an interesting dilemma for Ross Lyon. Luke McPharlin would normally be 7 Fremantle’s pressure? the automatic answer to this question, but concerns about his calf and groin issues It is doubtful that any team could cope with the level of pressure the Dockers may lead to doubts about his ability to go with the athletic Franklin if he plays brought to bear on Sydney last Saturday night. Fremantle must bring that up the ground. The Hawks used Franklin further out in their preliminary fi nal intensity to the grand fi nal, sustain it for longer than the two quarters they win over Geelong. It was a move that met with mixed success as Franklin kicked produced against the Swans and take the chances it creates for them. Hawthorn just one goal, albeit a critical one, at the start of the fi nal quarter. The Hawks may need clean exits from stoppages and scrums to get the ball into space and allow want Franklin closer to goal this time around, which would point to McPharlin their silky kicking skills to come into play. Or they need to survive the barrage going with him. The mobile and clever Michael Johnson is an alternative if well enough on the scoreboard to be able to capitalise when the pressure subsides Franklin is further out, bringing Johnson’s rebounding value into play. and the game opens up. This may be the single most pivotal factor in the game. Who does Ryan 2 Crowley v Mitchell Can Fremantle’s monster midfi eld Crowley tag? 8 give them fi eld position? It is a question that has been asked over The pressure works best when the Dockers can pin an opponent inside the 50m and over again this week. Crowley has had arc and just pile the pressure on them like an avalanche. The midfi eld and such an outstanding year stopping primary stoppage battles are going to be critical. The Dockers have been excellent around opposition playmakers in 2013 that Lyon’s the midfi eld in their fi nals wins over Geelong and Sydney. Sandilands has been decision on who to send him to shapes as one in commanding form in the ruck, and , , of the game’s most critical decisions. Logic and Hill all terrifi c inside and outside of the contest. Don’t underestimate Nick says it will be Sam Mitchell, the Hawthorn Suban’s output either. He was superb last week. Hawthorn are brilliant in this midfi elder who held the ship together in last area too, with Mitchell and Burgoyne prime movers, hard and mean, Friday night’s win over the Cats. That said, a work horse and and Hodge able to play important cameos. Lyon has had good success with Crowley on “outside” opposition playmakers. , an “inside-outside” stoppage Who are the unsung heroes? specialist, was a star against Geelong and 9 Hale has been a terrifi c addition for Hawthorn and shapes as the extra tall could also be a target. , whose opponents struggle to combat when he drifts forward. Shiels does invaluable run and long left-foot-kicking makes him work as a Mr Fix-it, sometimes closing down an opposition playmaker, and an 80m player, is an alternative, but Tendai he can play midfi eld, forward or back. Fremantle have who will Mzungu may be given the job on him. pinch-hit midfi eld if the team needs to add some muscle in there, or play a defensive forward’s role on either Birchall or Hodge. Getting a kick or two to Who stands ? de Boer for shots on goal inside 50m early in the match could be a worthwhile investment for the Dockers, making Hawthorn rebounders more accountable. 3 . Roughead may have had a poor preliminary fi nal, but he won the and poses a signifi cant threat to Fremantle. Dawson is the likely match-up, leaving Johnson to play on when he rests forward, or Who wins and why? . The threat Gunston poses should not be underestimated. He is a 10 There is no relevant form here. In round four the Hawks won by seven superb kick and doesn’t need many chances. The Dockers have a headache fi nding goals in Launceston, but the Dockers were minus Pavlich, Sandilands, Clarke the right match-up for , but they have a few possibles who will have a and McPharlin. You have to go back to 2012 for the next match between these go if required — Lee Spurr, Paul Duffi eld and Stephen Hill are all contenders. two teams and that took place before Lyon’s game plan had taken hold att Fremantle.Fremanttlle. The Dockers by fi ve points. The key for Fremantle is to make the battle one-on-one by keepingkkeeping away from their contests. Fremantle ball carriers willwill needneed to lowerlower their eyes because Pavlich will fancy his chances on the leadad againstagainst Lake,Lake, Franklin who prefers deep contested marking battles. There is also a bigbig chance in this match for Fremantle to stretch Hawthorn’s defence by sending and forward when theyhhey are not on the ball. The Hawks would have to shuffl e and Gibson around to cover the resting ruckman. 5Is Pavlich Fremantle’s major scoring threat? McPharlin You could argue that he isn’t in this match. The Dockers have a quality mid-sized forward in and excellent small forwards in and Michaelaael Walters. The Hawks have Gibson and Stratton as possible match-ups for Mayne, but don’t have ideal opponents for Fremantle’s smaller dynamos. and are possible opponents, but could be stretched for speed. is an excellent runner, but the Hawksks like him to be able to rebound further up the ground. Will the Hill brothers 6 play on each other? The romantics would love for that to happen, but I don’t think Lyon and spend too much time with their heads in Mills and Boon novels. It is a possible match-up. The Hawks may send a run-with player to Stephen Hill and that would most likely be . And Lyon may use Hill across half-back at times during the match where his pace and long kicking make him an asset. If these things don’t occur, brother versus brother on a wing in an AFL grand fi nal is a distinct possibility. For the latest news 7 THE EXPERTS HAVE THEIR SAY

■ Bridget Lacy 2010 2013

At the end of 2009, Fremantle drafted two West Australian teenagers the club hoped would be decade-long stars. Plenty was known about big- bodied midfielder , who had long been considered the best WA player in the draft, and the Dockers swooped when he was available at pick four. But gangly forward Nat Fyfe was more of an unknown quantity when he arrived at the Dockers through their second selection, pick 20. Morabito starred from round one of the 2010 season, showing exactly why recruiters had rated him so highly, as a rebuilding Fremantle started to climb the ladder. It wasn’t long before Fyfe joined him in impressing and Dockers recruiters and fans started to believe they had scored a draft jackpot. Both Morabito and Fyfe featured as Fremantle returned to the finals for the first time since 2006, beating Hawthorn at before falling short against Geelong at the MCG a week later. But tragedy struck during the following pre-season when Morabito ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament. Now 21, he has not played a game for the club since, re-injuring the same knee twice and having two more reconstructions along the way. Morabito, who recently returned from a trip to Italy, is preparing to attempt another comeback next year. He will watch today as his teammates play in Fremantle’s first grand final, against Hawthorn at the MCG. Fyfe, meanwhile, has gone from strength to strength to become one of the competition’s elite players. He fell just short of his first All-Australian selection this season and polled more votes than any other Docker in last Monday night’s count. Bookmakers have installed him as one of the favourites to win the Norm Smith Medal. Fyfe said Morabito’s plight was always in his mind. “Mora is a really tight mate,” he said. “It must be a tough time for him watching on. “He’s had a really tough battle and sometimes the cards don’t fall your way, but he’s resilient and has been remarkable. “Everyone in footy I think is praying and hoping and wishing him the best of luck for his return next year.” Even with the 189cm Morabito with that and had a few clashes Geelong premiership player “And guys like Mora and from of 13 had helped his out of the side, Fyfe is part of a with a few coaches who .
